Now that I have a tv that can use 'em, I'm upgrading my Xbox cables to component. Should I bother bumping up my PS2 cables as well? I'm ignorant of any title other than Gran Turismo 4 that will support them, and I won't be picking up GT4 until the online expansion is released anyways.

Anyone have them? Pros, cons? Either that or stick with the S-video...

there aren't too many games that support prog scan...soul calibur 2 and tekken 4 come to mind, as well as jak II and III, and presumably the r+c games. the upgrade over s-video isn't otherwise huge, but as cheap as ps2 component cables are, you might as well go for it.

While it's certainly more the exception than the rule, there are other PS2 games that support progressive scan. Jak 3 is GORGEOUS in 480p. God of War supports 480p and 16:9 widescreen. Check this website out! It's a great reference on what games do and do not support progressive scan and widescreen.

The PS2 games listed here with a 480p next to them are progressive scan compatible (I don't know if the list is complete), plus some upcoming games such as God of War will also support it.

I have the PS2 component cable, and I highly recommend it. Besides games being brighter, it really improves the quality of FMVs in games, although in some games the gameplay can look slightly pixelated. If you play DVDs on your PS2 like I do, you will notice a huge difference. DO NOT, however, get rid of your composite cable. If you play PS1 games on your PS2, they will look hideous with the component cable, so you'll need to switch back to the composite for them, or else cut your eyes out. I play on a 27" Sony Vega Trinitron, BTW.

I don't have a super duper television, but I noticed a jump in visual quality in my games once I purchased component cables.

Gungriffon Blaze for instance. Some of the robots had these thin antenna protruding from their backs that you just couldn't see with RCA or S-Video.

I bought the standard Sony cables.

You don't need an HDTV or games that support progressive scan to see the difference between S-video and component cables. Component is sharper and has much cleaner color separation. Plug both into the same TV and see for yourself.

Component cables are godly for the PS2. You should see games like Castlevania Lament of innocense and GunGrave. Geez do they ever look good. It makes you wanna say what Vram issue. Get the cables,you'll really enjoy the games all the more.

In Canada that's not necessarily an option. The cheapest ones I've seen are $12.99...not that it matters, I'm still going to pick it up for God of War.

Component cables are totally worth it, no matter what system!

Compared to composite (1 video, 2 stereo), component cables are three cables dedicated solely to video (Gr - Black/White, Blue & Red - Blue, Red) and send more than three times more info than the average composite cable! In other words, better sharpness, colors and depth of field (how far you can see into the picture before it blurs).

Highly recommended. I've got component cables for all three systems.

I used the component cables with my PS2 alot, and it makes the colors much better, but the one thing that bugged me was that it showed alot more aliasing and flickering, but it was good most of the time.

But for a game such as Hot Shots Golf 3, the enormous aliasing with the grass nearly made the game unplayable.

Buy yes, go for it without hesitations.

I was thinking of it too (my brother took my component cable with him for university). But I have heard conflictual opinions. It's just the same, or it's placebo? :lol

Go for it - they are cheap, and there's a visible improvement in color and sharpness over the S-video, even in games that don't support prog scan. Even though the share of games that run in prog scan on PS2 is small, over the years a bunch of really good looking games that support progressive scan has accumulated, and of course more is coming (God of War, and Tekken 5 come to mind) so those will make better use of the cable.

Now, if your TV is progressive scan only, prepare for some really bad surprises with games that do no support prog scan, especially those that run in half frame buffer video mode.

I like it, gives the color a bit more separation even without pro scan. Plus I get a kick out of running PSOne games in component--which wasn't possible on the original Playstation.

Progressive or not, Component still looks way better than the next best thing (S-Video).

I dunno if they have them in the US, but in Japan Sony has a special cable that puts a component (RGB?) feed directly into Sony TVs with a special cable. The image quality rocks ass. And PS1 games look fine on PS2 in component. You're just seeing them the way they were meant to be seen, if you don't like it, turn on texture filtering on the PS2.

The problem with PSOne games and component cables and the PS2, is FMVs, especialy if you have an HDTV. Eurk!
