Computer experts needed: Problems with DirectX

Problem: I recently purchased Age of Mythology: Gold Edition and am unable to play multiplayer.

The person I am attempting to play with has the exact same version as me. We both have AoM: Gold Edition and have version 1.03.

This person runs Win XP and was able to connect via the ESO thing and register through that.

I am running Win 2000 Professional and am not able to connect to the ESO and register. It allowed me to create a user name but it eventually said I have an invalid CD key. I do have a legitimate version of the game. This isn't a copied CD with a crack. We both purchased our copies of the game.

The best method would be to simply connect directly via IP address, but that didn't work either. Each of us tried hosting, and that didn't work.

I thought the problem might've been with DirectX, so I upgraded it. Now I have 9-something. I ran diagnostic with DirectX and it said everything was working properly. However, when I go to the Network tab of dxdiag, it says I have several errors. One of them is with the TCP/IP thing, so I'm assuming this is why DirectPlay isn't working.

If DirectX is indeed the problem, I'm not about to reinstall Windows or do a format.

I read that perhaps the problem could be resolved if...

a) I DLed this program that would convert me back to DirectX 8.1. This sounds iffy to me because it didn't work before I upgraded DirectX either.

b) I have someone send me the individual files that are currently corrupted and/or missing for me and manually place (and overwrite) them in the registry.

Can anyone help me fix this problem???
