That glow that seems to be around every single object and character in Mario and Pikmin looks bad. This screen above is the worst example of it I've seen. What is it? Some kind of shader? Nintendo has to tone it down, it's becoming their next-gen trademark...look at that screen, the whole thing has the glow.

Here is my post from another thread.

They produce good looking stuff with their art styles but I'm not a fan of all the shaders and depth of field they shit on the screen. It screams "we finally have shaders".

Nah, but for real. Playing this on a 5 inch OLED without the screenshot compression, it has perfect image quality and could definitely pass as a game playable on next-gen (current-gen now?) consoles. It looks SO GOOD.

Man. This is bullshit.

I now want a 3DS, Vita and a WiiU. Can't you guys be considerate? I don't have all this money...

Crimson Dragon is 1080p.
What about Criterion? They made both games. There was a mass exodus from Criterion and Ghost is the real Criterion now. They switched to Frostbite, though.

I wasn't aware of an exodus. I thought the team were simply split. That also explains why one of the main coders are now at SMS, helping with Wii U project cars version. Sorry about the cliff-hanger, just suggesting that it's amazing what Criterion pulled off on Wii U, with their 'first date' with the hardware.

No, Nintendo also uses that effect when it makes no sense at all, and has since Galaxy 1. (You can see it in that Dolphin shot someone posted.)
I don't think it's even affected by scene lighting at all. It seems to be based on orientation of polys relative to the camera.
Ok, I think I understand what effect you guys are talking about, although, it's a lot more subtle in some other areas, and rarely overused, imo.

Game looks good, better than either the Xbox 360 or PS3. Run's smooth for the most part, minus some scenes that involve alot of NPC's.
People in this thread claim the game runs much smoother than AC3, while looking considerably better. A couple never noticed frame drops, but i think someone mentioned some drops in the cities when things got really hectic, but still much better than AC3 (WiiU). This is just from memory, reading opinions in this topic.

Thanks!

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Also, the shot above pretty much exactly matches the character render screen GG released.

There's a cutscene near the beginning of the game (prisoner exchange) that's a much closer match.

It's this one?=O

Yeah.
It might have actually been taken in that scene with the camera zoomed in and less DoF blur, lol.

This Nintendo effect you guys are talking about, rim lighting, is just a way to make characters more defined. It's the way news broadcasters are lit and the way Team Fortress characters are lit. It's more pronounced in Mario than in a lot of other games, but it exists in a lot of games and often isn't realistically physically motivated, just as the lighting in films is rarely physically accurate. Back lighting / rim lighting / kicker lights is hardly some sort of Nintendo invention, and it's used in games the same way it's used in theater TV and film for the same reasons.

I know what rim lighting is. I used the term earlier in this thread. But I don't think Nintendo is using actual lights to achieve it.

They just go crazy with a brdf/fresnel shader and use it to put a glow on the curves of a meshes surface. Similar to how most metals and car shaders are made, but more subdued and utilizing reflection.

so does this thread have rules set yet? i don't wanna overload or anything.

also how do these screen threads work with spoilers in general?

So many conflicting opinions on Nintendo's shaders.

But the game itself is all over the map.
That beach scene looks great, especially sand Bowser and sand goombas.
And then you have Jagsrock's screens this page, where Nintendo reached Perfect Dark Zero levels of tastelessness.

Damn. Those are a LOT better than Twitter, haha. Still not ideal, but nice. Seems like they are facebook?

Is Facebook as intrusive as I think it is? I'm worried about connecting to it.
Yea, uploaded to Facebook :)

Obviously not 100% perfect, but like you said, I've found them a lot better than Twitter. Personally I don't find it intrusive...it's not like they send you ads or anything. You can create an account, link it on your PS4 and that's it.

PS4 Assassin's Creed fails to impress me. Imo you can't have a next-gen game without next-gen lighting, and to my eyes it looks identical lighting-wise to Wii U.

Yup.

Though I have it for Xbone, the water is nice but the lighting really falls flat

First off Wii U is next gen(technically it's current gen now along with Xbox one & PS4) and secondly if you are going to disregard the Wii U, the lightning is the last thing you should be dismissive of. It is capable of amazing lighting as Pikmin 3, Mario 3D World, Nintendo Land and Mario Kart demonstrate.

The problem with Assassin's Creed is that it is a cross gen game so the only improvements you can expect are resolution bump, better IQ and improved texture quality.
