Contact lenses. pluses and minuses, costs?

I remember when my folks got me contacts when I was a sophomore in high school because they thought I had a confidence problem (which I did, but it was something that time, not an image change would help fix) and I went along with it. After embarassing myself at the eye place because my face was water-streaked from trying to get the damn things in for an hour and a half and the resulting irritation driving my tear ducts crazy, every day I wore them afterwards my eyes burned like crazy after more than 4 hours of use plus I kept getting headaches all the time because the tearing up was fucking with my sinuses. I think I wore my contacts for maybe a month before tossing them in a cabinet and going back to glasses

I've been wearing contacts for about 2 years I think. They are far better then wearing glasses IMO. I started off with the soft daily lenses but found that having to put them on and take them off every single day got tiresome. Plus the fact that you had to be really careful each time because it's very easy to get a bit of dirt or bacteria on the lense which will irratate your eye all day like a constant eye lash in your eye. When it's really bad it feels like your eyes are experiencing a mild burning sensation! It can cause your eyes to become completely bloodshot and it can stay like that for DAYS.

So I tried monthly contacts and haven't looked back. THEY ROCK!!! No need to take them out everyday. They last a lot longer then a month usually too. Definately worth the extra cost. It's great not having to worry about remembering to take your lenses out if you get drunk at a party or go out late and just want to fall into bed when you get home. Can't recommend them enough.

Never heard of those "hard" contacts. Sounds interesting. Pressing on your eyes and "dinting" them in so you can see sounds a bit dodgy though.. I like the idea that you don't have to wear them and you can see! But it comes back to the fact you have to take them in and out daily, which sucks.

I'm very intersted to have some kind of laser treatment for my eyes. Just scared about something going wrong. And it ain't cheap!

crap, I've been sleeping w/ my contacts for years, and I wear 3-week ones months at a time to conserve...

I'll go buy a case Wed. at Target then and start taking them on and off I guess, although because I have not set sleeping schedule and often sleep in buildings/floors/classrooms it might not be convenient...

at least I'll try to take them off maybe if I carry a mirror around as well...

If i'm having a light nap during the day I won't bother taking them out. Overnight I'll definitely take them out.

I forgot one night, and the next morning my eyes were covered in slimy crap.

I've recently began wearing my glasses again... mainly because I got new sexy ones and because I was way to lazy to take my contacts out every night. Glasses are just so easy to take on and off again and my eyes just feel better.

That and... I can just see better with my glasses. Whenever I put in my contacts after wearing my glasses for a while the degree of sharpness is just lower.

I am so glad that I dont have to wear any glasses or contacts. I would go crazy with having to wear something like that.

You can really eliminate a lot of the comfort problems with contacts if you wash/rinse your hands really well and dry them on a paper towel before handling them. (And don't touch anything else in between.) I've seen people do a half-assed job washing their hands, barely rinse them, and then dry them on a dirty cloth towel before putting their lenses in and then they wonder why they have problems.

Another tip I have is that you get a mirror and put it flat on the counter/table instead of using one hanging on a wall. Then you can put a drop of saline solution in the lens before you put it in. The liquid will grab your eye and lubricate it for a more comfortable insertion. No double entendre intended. :D

Also the peroxide based solutions work better and therefore make your lenses more comfortable than the other kind.

DO NOT WEAR CONTACTS IN YOUR SLEEP!!!

People, when you wear your contacts more than 8 hours a day--or worse, sleep in them--you deprive blood vessels in your eyes from oxygen. When this happens, they grow bigger to try and grab more oxygen, and if this keeps going on they grow over your retina and you GO BLIND. It is stupid and dangerous to do, if you have contacts they should only be for the major hours of the day and you should have glasses for the rest of the time.
