Continuing after losses in RPGs

PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS oh god i am drowning in them
I'm playing Suikoden IV, and this is one thing I really like. I die in the fight, I get an option to start from the beginning of the fight I lost. Ryu ga Gotoku has this option too, and I love it.
That or the DQ style warp you back to a save point, lose some money but keep equipment and XP.
It may be a little "weaksauce" I'm also playing PSP Devil Summoner and lord knows MegaTen games are unforgiving, but I just hate losing progress like that.
Any other RPGs with these features? I know older stuff like Final Fantasy Legend 2 had it up to a point but I'm trying to think of other games that with "don't get as fucked on your progress loss for dying" features.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars let you keep your experience, but all item boxes & coins were reset to what they were at the last save, and you automatically restarted from the last save point (hooray for exploiting the star item boxes in the entrance to belome temple for experience over and over again!)

Not a real answer to the question, but playing older RPGs on an emulator with save state is a godsend. Then again, there are few RPGs I find to be a real chore. Most are ridiculously easy and/or let you save on the world map or something similar, setting you back very little if you lose. I really can't think of anything but Nocturne that has bothered me in this respect.

I think every Suikoden game has this feature.

I don't think I can remember actually dying in a Suikoden before, haha.

Naw only Suikoden 4 had this. I remember dying to that Poison Rat in Suikoden II and having to walk through the dungeon every single time from the last save point. If a game doesn't implement this, then they're just being an ass. I don't see why a game shouldn't have this.

I don't really like it when RPGs make you go back to the last time you saved after party death, potentially losing hours of progress. I prefer a more lenient system like in DQ8, or games where they flat out delete your save file upon death (Nethack, Moria, etc). None of this middle ground shit.

The only problem with Wild ARMs 4's implementation is if you end up fighting an enemy you have no chance of defeating (for example, a bonus boss you're way too low level to fight), you're stuck in an infinite loop of losing.

I'm playing dds2 right now and I FUCKING HATE that when you die, it practically reboots the game. How god damn hard would it be to bring up a load screen after the game over movie?

Yeah, it's not perfect, but as long as you save frequently, the occasional fuck-up isn't too damaging.
I'm forgiving of the MegaTen games for being balls out difficult in the "Yeah, you're gonna lose progress when you die" regard, but maybe because the whole thing is balls out hard I don't mind.

Well, if you have no chance if defeating it, then it would just be like going back to the last save point.

My personal favorite is a style that let's you keep exp.

Jesus.. I have NEVER played a game that actually deleted my save file when I died. I've played games that actually had no save systems, of course, but this is something I have not encountered.

I'm cool with the DQ8 model of restarting you at your last save with half the money retaining items and experience.

Hey, how about getting dicked over after a victory? I got my last ten levels and piles of endgame equipment by coasting through the end of Dragon Warrior III GBC on quicksaves alone. Imagine my delight to see that beating the final boss does not prompt a final save with which to access the bonus content, but instead flags your last hard save. Whoops!

Nevermind. Fuck this system. Goddamed Angel Hairball. How was I supposed to know not to open a random goddamned treasure chest lest I be faced with a redonkulous fight?

This fucker can do 2000+ damage to someone with one attack! What the fuck is this!!

FFVI let you keep your experience, but whatever stat bonuses you gained from leveling with an Esper were lost. To me, that might as well just be a straight loss of all your time...

No.

Angel Hairballs are easy on new game +

Well ya they're not boss fights

Yeah but it's not a random fight either, so I figured you wouldn't be able to run.

I was having alot of fun with Tales of Symphonia, and then I got about 45 minutes into a place with no save spot...died...and turned the game off, never touched it, and when RE4 came out, traded it in (got 35 bucks credit, too!).

I pity you.
