NEW: Remedy's next big game, Control 2, will be made with a smaller budget than Alan Wake IIIt's part of a refined approach at Remedy, as the studio learns from some recent challenges

Remedy's CEO tells me: "We are moving from surviving to succeeding"

Hopefully putting important story details you need to find spread around 24.000 readable documents in every single room you enter is one of the things that they can't fit within the budget.

Control was heaven for those of us who like to wander around checking every desktop. Actually decent things to find in the rows of cubicles.

Is the first game cool or what? Think I got it for free at Tim's Store.

Control had almost no cutscenes and cutscenes are a huge money pit.
so I assume (and hope) Control 2 will follow a similar blueprint.

Control was the exact antithesis of Quantum Break, and that's why I loved it. it was their best game since Max Payne 2.
gameplay focused, no AAA bullshit, fun powers, interesting lore.

not every game needs a plethora of cutscenes

Yep. The best part is they put all that lore behind datapads around the level. Giving you the option learn more about the world if you want and if not you can stick with the base story the game gives you.

As long as you limit your sales by 100% at least by not releasing your games on Steam then Tim's money will be lower with each franchise. I'm pretty sure Control sold more than AW2 on PC.

At least Control has better game mechanics than either Alan Wake.

Them making a good story is all I care about.

From all studios out there...this is one of those that i hope will never close. We need more studios like this. And i'll be there day one for Control 2.

Loved the first one. Hopefully we aren't just stuck in the World Tree the whole game and we get to visit some other realms.

The equivalent of cutscenes was when you went to call the board aliens. I loved those scenes.

For free? Yeah, give it a shot. The combat is fun but kind of unvisceral (like a lot of Remedy games). Your character is obviously powerful, but for some reason the impacts don't feel very...impactful. Needs more screen shake, bass, or other dev tricks or something imo.

The world and side stories felt kind of straight-up stolen from SCP.

I have high hopes for Control 2. The first was such an amazing game. Makes me want to go play it again.

Control (1) was made on a very modest $35m budget.

I have full faith in Remedy to stretch a small (by comparison) budget and make a great AAA game.

I never understand why Alan Wake 2 need a big budget at all.
Compared to other games, €70m isn't much and probably what it should be instead of the stupid budgets we're seeing these days.

I loved it but it is divisive.
Personally I liked it but didn't love it. Storyline was a bit too disjointed and scenery/enemies didn't really do it for me.

That said it was a very solid title and definitely worth at least trying out for a few hours to see if it clicks.

You ever watch the syfy channel show channel zero? It was really weird but they had little TV shows with pirates on it. Control has live action scientists that you watch on vhs tapes to get clues. It's also weird.

Anyway the games good.

They made such a big deal about the song and dance number in AW2, it turned me off of that series altogether. Their games are mostly misses in my book. The main character in Control had a butt ugly face that they changed up from the actual person they modeled it from. Not sure why they did that, but it was a rather stupid move in my opinion.

Good.

Going by the article, the budget for Control 2 is approx. 50$ million which is the "healthy" range (circa. 70$~90$ mm. at max.) other studios should strive for. None of this unfathomably risky 100~200$+ mm. lunacy. We're at a point in the industry where more studios ought to adopt a smart ressource usage and decision-making approach over extravagancy. Much of the tech available out there is more than mature enough now to bring this home and stand shoulder to shoulder with the big names.

CONTROL one of my favorite games ever. The foundation is there with the first game they can definitely deliver on the same budget.

Open world Control will be different though, I can already see the crazy physics in battles.

They made the first game on a $30M budget, and it turned out great.

If this is at $50M that's a substantial increase.

Hopefully the next one will be even better.

Loved Control.

Was hyped for Alan Wake 2 cause of it. Till it turned out to be a walking sim.

Would prefer if they keep it like original.

well, i would certainly hope so. the first control was also made for less, & was a helluva better game than aw2...

Nice, finally a dev that reacts appropriately to market conditions instead of making eveything more bloated and expensive all the time. Increase efficiency and productivity, not overhead.

Engines already there and they have a basic blueprint.

Hopefully they can make budgets stretch to make an amazing game

❤️ Remedy!

First Control is awesome, way better than Alan Wake 2. They should keep the focus on the gameplay and having fun with different powers. Also mix known locations from the Oldest House with some new ones and don't waste money on some high budget music video most people will find cringy anyway.
