Controllers |OT| It's the Hall-Effect Life!

Seems like a new revision of the Vader 5 Pro is out now!

From the video, I can already notice a ratcheting tension adjustment mechanism, which should theoretically help woth the original loose controls. Not sure what else is changed though..

new vader same but different but same...will snag one.

Glad they are making more tarantulas as well, need to look for the amazon listing and will get one of those shortly.

Re steam controller...May window maybe?

Grabbed this GuliKit TT MAX....

And this LEADJOY XENO Plus for my Switch 2/PC.

I don't know what Gulikit is trying to pull but the old listing for the TT Max/Pro is no longer available.

Instead there's a new listing.

Is there an actual difference or are they just trying hide from the old reviews shitting on it?

where did you get the leadjoy? I put it on a watch list in february on amz and its still not in stock.
Also me and Diseased Yak Diseased Yak has bought Xeno Plus through GadgetHyper

EDIT: S0ULZB0URNE S0ULZB0URNE I also have TT Max but that PlayStation grey inspired colour, mine holds up well, other forum user in here had QC problems with back paddles. I like it although its a tad bigger than I would want to, it's both thicker than ES Pro (which could be because of Maglev vibration motors) and it's a hella lot wider, it's so so wide, lmao - I have smaller hands other than that I like it. That HyperLink2 BT adapter reaching 750Hz polling rate over BT is pure black magic to me.

Huh, I thought he was a trusted seller.

Now I'm getting worried as I live abroad, lmao. But I'm based in Central Europe so it might be good though.

Good thing I'm still waiting for a pay day to either purchase it or preorder it.

Diseased Yak Diseased Yak you've preordered LeadJoy Xeno Plus on Gadget right?

This is my second order from them(Vader 5 Pro was the 1st)
No issues in my experience so far.
If I encounter something I'll post it.

I like the TT Max but am very disappointed that the face buttons aren't Micro-switches.

Should i get a Power A Switch 2 controller and case because the controller has hall effect and the whole is being clearanced out for $20? Don't need it. But I mean it's a ticket to the hall effect club. And a case just in case is always nice.

I'm expecting its going to be scalper-city once again so I don't anticipate being able to easily buy one until the end of the year or even early 2027.
I don't think we need to worry too much personally.

Valve will most likely put the same restrictions they did for Steam Deck.
  • Obviously only sold through Steam
  • Account older then __ with purchase made
  • Limit per account
This is what they did for the Steam Deck originally so I'd say it's likely even if it's just a controller. At minimum Steam only and purchase limit should help.

The SC is the one controller I will spend over the odds for. My usual aversion to expensive controllers doesn't apply here.

That said, I wasn't expecting it to be over £80 before this discussion.

But i want 10 of them! :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Seriously though, I'm looking to replace at least 2 (and, in time, all) of my xbox controllers. And having owned the first steam controller I dont want to be up a creek once it finally breaks and I find out they aren't making them anymore.

Since I was having fun with flight sticks, decided to mix it up with something else:

LHZ7jRmWGNPltgop.jpeg

Why'd I buy it?

Got it cheap refurbished through Logitech's official store on ebay for about $145. The XBOX/PC variant is a bit cheaper, but I don't have an Xbox this gen, and this Playstation/PC version actually plays a bit better compatibility wise on Linux due to a difference in their HID protocol. Also, I can try out Gran Turismo on my PS5 someday I guess.

Gonna say up front if you want the best value new budget wheel to play modern racing games, this device is NOT for you. Stuff like the Moza R3 exists for around the same MSRP new that are direct-drive wheels more modern in design (this Logitech model based in 2015), with more powerful and subtle force-feedback that is objectively better.

No, the reason to get this is down to tons of G29s exist out in the wild you can get pre-owned for cheap, they are pretty durable, and most importantly for me is this model's backwards compatibility. I'm actually planning to get a better direct-drive wheel later this year when I have money, but wanted to dip my toes in with something cheaper, and get used to using one on older/easier to play arcade racing games, older late 90s/2000s PC racing games, and older console stuff via emulation. Logitech's platform has been around a while, always worked on consoles, always had cheap options, so older PC/console stuff are just designed to work on them vs Moza that will run into issues even being detected when you hit 360/PS3 era or older.

Early Impressions

So far it's been a mostly postive experience, with the only downsides just being learning, like how to counter-steer during drifting so I don't spin-out or hit track barriers :messenger_grinning_sweat:

First thing I learned was how important wheel radius is, where the G29 defaults to 900 degrees, which I'm sure is great for racing sims, but garbage for anything arcade (Outrun, Need for Speed, etc.) to simcade (Forza Horizon, Dirt, etc.). 900 degrees means it takes so much rotation to move the car, which for twitchier handling of arcade racers you're better off going down to between 270-360 degrees, or simcades like Forza Horizon 4 or Dirt 3 around 540 degrees since those lean closer to realistic handling.

After the G29 easily played Dirt 3 and FH4, I opted towards trying some old arcade games with MAME, until I ended up discovering another arcade platform on PC: TeknoParrot. This program essentially emulates newer arcade games from the 2000s to now. Unfortunately Windows-only for now, but the roms weren't hard to find, it even supports online multiplayer, and most importantly works with the FFBArcadePlugin that adds force-feedback support for wheels in these arcade games. Playing Daytona Championship USA at 4k resolution was a trip:
ogMMVDxWscW5us5V.png

The force feedback worked like a charm down to vibrating when I rear-ended my first car getting used to the controls.

Windows vs Linux

Weirdly, I had a more positive experience on Linux with all the hardware features, even though I'm stuck using Windows for Teknoparrot arcade games.

The Logitech G Hub app on my Win11 won't for some reason let me bind buttons on the wheel to keyboard/mouse inputs...they just do nothing. If I keep the buttons default, games will still pick them up for bindings at least though. Linux was more positive, as the Input Remapper app easily let me bind whatever, and Oversteer app essentially does all the other G HUB features like different wheel setting profiles.

If you're interested in Driving wheels for Linux, this handy linux steering wheels chart marks the quality of compatibility, with Logitech, Moza & Cammus models being able to get platinum.

Conclusion

I'm still kinda rubbish at drifting or hard turns, but the feel/immersion of using one is similar to the flight sticks in that I just end up having more fun. For now I'm gonna try more arcadey stuff to get my bearings until I can get used to more sim stuff, which I heard would be easier with better direct-drive wheels because the feedback helps clue you in by feel how to turn and the traction you have.

Leaning towards a Logitech RS50 direct-drive wheel for myself during Black Friday, but this humble wheel really did handle any old game I threw at it like Sega Rally 3 or Outrun 2006, along with newer stuff like Forza Horizon 5 or Need for Speed Heat. So for PS3/360 gen and older games it gets a big recommend from me.

Still wanna try some older Need for Speeds, wreck-focused stuff like Flatout 1-2, or slower hauler sims like MudRunner.

It has arrived! Unboxing now. Will post impressions after I game on it a bit. Initial feel impressions are: I like it. It's light, but not too light. Feels good in the hands, and the stick movement is smooth.

Do let me know how does it perform on Linux too.

I could probably just like write my own udev rules if it gets picked-up as m+k, lmao.

But I'm curious if it would like work out of the box.

Mine still has the same status, that it cleared customs is in my country and was received by delivery company but it's not our for delivery yet.

Some feedbackon linux compatibilty from a Beta Tester: https://www.reddit.com/r/Controller/s/yCa0Ygc6ax

No xinput and gyro isnt optimal, but dinput works. Not too bad imo, a patch is scheduled for may.

I will probably like figure it out with udev rules, I just need to like grab correct IDs and try to force Xpad on it in Xinput through rules, and see if it runs.

Apex 5 was like being marked as not compatible with Linux on gamepadla at release but a simple rule fixed that. And later patch to Xpad driver itself.

I also remember some shenanigans with Cyclone 2 working on Dinput on Linux but not Xinput, I have successfuly forced it to use Xpad in Xinput with udev rules then, lmao.

Mine is out for delivery already.

Edit: I have to grab it from Postal Office unfortunately and that will be tomorrow. So my first impressions will be either on Saturday or Sunday.

Well, I can't get it to work with CachyOS. At least, not with the 2.4 gHz dongle. Works fine connected via Bluetooth.

Things I tried:
- checked "dmesg -w" and saw errors when it connected, so I switched profiles on the controller (menu/home button + left dpad) and one of those connected with no errors in dmesg
- just like the GameSir G7 Pro, it shows up as a keyboard and mouse along with generic HID device. So frustrating. I created udev rules for it just like the G7, however, unlike the G7, this didn't fix things.
- I can see it under "lsusb" as a LiteEMF device
- Tried jumping through a myriad of AI-assisted hoops to fix it, but ultimately nothing would make it work

8bitdo's biggest flaw are the ergonomics, but the new Ultimate seems to fix it thankfully

grip-s.svg

The Ultimate 3 is (white) is listed for 43.99 on Amazon. I'm kind of want it. I liked the Ultimate 2 but it was 'ultimatly' too small for me. I'm hoping this new version 3 will fix that.
I need to see some youtube reviews or any reviews.

edit-It's been brought to my attention that I don't know what is what in the 8bitdo lineup of controllers. 8bitdo has many products and the store is a bit confusing to me.

That one?

It is 3-Mode not Ultimate 3, the new one will be called Ultimate 3e and will be much pricer, expect Elite Series 2 price range. Since it's being made from higher quality materials.

3-Mode is pretty old, uses Hall Effect sticks, and cheaper one at that plus it's capped at 250Hz.

Here's official page.

Yep, that one. Is that one basically the Ultimate 2 in size and shape? If so I'm going to give up on 8bitdo as I can't navigate the store page. so many controllers on offer at 8bitdo I can't keep up.

Yeah basically same shape, you get worse polling rate, worse sticks but gain better vibrations and impulse triggers, and better shell quality - mind you. But I think quality of plastic shell was among the best I had held up in my hands so far.

So I might consider Ultimate 3e at some point.

yeah... don't confuse the Ultimate 3-Mode with the Ultimate 3 🤣
their naming schemes got a bit out of hand at times.

Thanks, You kept me from wasting money. I'll wait for this Ultimate 3e. Thats sounds like the one I want.

I'm pretty sure with upgraded sticks, a bit bigger profile and higher quality materials it sure could be punching above it's weight. But I bet it will be hella expensive, it will probably be cheaper than let's say DualSense Edge or that Razer Wolverine V3 8K, but still more expensive than G7 Pro 8K edition. But it could have top notch hi end shell, tbh.

It probably won't be day one for me but maybe I will get it when it finally shows in official distros in my country.

I've been using the Xbox Elite Series 2 since it's release. Over 7 years? 2019 is that right?
I have two of them. A black one and a white one. They have developed the dreaded drift after so long. But They have lasted longer than any other main line controller I've owned. even the rechargeable batteries hold up.
The biggest issues have always been the sticking shoulder buttons, (I fixed myself with a bit of silicon lubricant)
Also sometimes they disconnect once in a while on the Xbox. Doesn't happen with the dongle on PC.

I don't mind spending a bit more for a controller that I will use for that long.

I hope the sticks will have like smooth motion on 3e.

The way sticks work on my 8Bitdo Pro 3 which I got abroad at the release date, they do have that weird centering, not smooth motion at the beginning and the end when they like recenter - I can feel like a spring is doing something weird, maybe not quite like it's squeaking but its affecting the motion.

I got similar feel on Gulikit ES Pro and that's a cheapo controller.

And Gulikit TT Max doesn't have it, nor G7 Pro from Gamesir.

I even have older Gamesir Super Nova 2 on Hall Effects sticks and I think it motion is smoother than the one one Pro 3, lmao.

This time I'm like waiting till my official retailers will sell 3e in my country so if I won't like something I can like return it and stuff - but yeah I will like probably give in at some point and check it out.

I also wanna check out Super Nova 3 once Gamesir drops it - I know for sure they are making it since it was being talked about on Gamesirs Discord. I love the profile on my Super Nova 2, just sticks after trying TMRs feel meh and latency is kinda high, I think on the dongle sticks have 30ish ms of something like this. And most Gamesir controllers now on dongle do like 5ms on sticks. So that's a pretty big difference.

Super Nova 2 size is just like 8BitDo's Ultimate 1 and 2 but the profile is more like Nintendo Switch Pro controller so you don't have to tuck your elbows in to be comfortable but you actually can if you want to.

And I expect them to at least drop in TMRs and shave off latency on Super Nova 3 - I think I read somewhere that it could be using haptics instead of regular rumble. So that another surprise if true.

I got my first modern controller today guys. GameSir G7 Pro. I immediately put on the cross shaped d-pad and mapped LB to L4 and RB to R4 as I've got muscle memory'd from not being able to reach should buttons on Steam Deck.

The only thing I'm not loving in the mouse click d-pad inputs. But, I'm probably better off buying a cool modern Saturn style pad for my Metroidvanias... Suggestions there?

There's the 8bitdo M30 for Saturn style - it's even 6 button.

I've had a weird relationship with microswitch d-pads. I used to hate them. My general policy is that a button doesn't need to be loud because the game gives me all the feedback I need, and I want silent switches in a controller but no one does them.

But recently I went back to my 8bitdo Ultimate 2 (switches) and since then I actually prefer it to what I was using, which is the Gamesir T3 Lite (traditional). Although to be honest it's not been for much D-Pad gameplay, only a little bit of Croc. But there is a certain satisfaction to it.

What about the SN30 Pro? The GameSir Tegenaria Lite for $15 looks super tempting.

SN30 s just a cut down Pro 2 or Pro 3- I didn't found Pro 2/3 particularly comfortable. But maybe if it doesn't have palm grips it will be more compact.

Tegenaria Lite on the other hand has best budget sticks, pretty good dpad.

Only thing is triggers have pretty short travel. That's about it.

Never tried it myself, but maybe others can weigh in. The closest I've had is the full controller version Beard mentioned above, which isn't to my taste but others out there in the world seem to like it.

The T3/Tegenaria Lite is a great controller for the money. R/L2 has a much shorter range than what you'd expect, but if you need a budget wired controller you can't do much better.

From what I remember simpatico simpatico you game on Linux right? I had GuliKit Elves 2 misinput on Linux like crazy, while all the other controllers worked fine. Be sure to know that in advance. It has got like 1000Hz polling rate wired and maglev vibration motors, so it has haptics. If you decide on that one, order it from like Amazon or smth so you can return it if it doesn't stick.

I wasn't as knowledgeable then as I am now so maybe a simple udev ignore rule would work. I can try to help now. Lmao.

Elves 2 has digital triggers (simple on and off - not pressure sensitive). And not analog - pressure sensitive - triggers.

Know that in advance, so it's basically like a Nintendo Switch Pro controller in terms of triggers.

Sticks should be much much better than SN30 has though in that one.

I think the Tegenaria is the move. Short trigger travel is the move since the games I'll be reach for this thing to play don't have analog trigger needs. Just looking for something to play the new Castlevania with!

Went ahead an ordered it. Will put it through the paces with Dead Cells tomorrow and see if it's going to be how I tackle the new Castlevania. I think this will also be amazing for Tony Hawk and the little bit of Street Fighter I still play.

Just learned about the 8bitdo retro reciever for the PS2. If this thing works as I think it does I could get rid of my old beatup PS2 wireless controllers and simply use a Dual Sense, or Series controller on my PS2, or many other bluetooth controllers.
Does anyone have this 8bitdo dongle? Any known issues? I'm about to order one off amazon, but will wait a few days. $25 bucks.
