Cookie Cutter (PC, 2023, 'Metroidvania' not 'Clicker') || I can see your panties; You can see my spleen

New joint by first-time developer Subcult, with some wild art concepts, garishly 2D-animated creatures and characters, and a kind of punk ethos. Gameplay is mostly focused on combat in this trailer so it's tough to tell how it plays, but it's a statsy, juggly, comboey 2D action-platformer. Coming to PC next year.

Some of the developer's concept art on Twitter push NSFW limits, so enjoy that too.

Wow, looks amazing. I hope this comes to Gamepass. Thanks for making this thread, we need more games with badittude.

Nice soundtrack....
I agree, it's one of the first things I noticed. I'll need to hear the whole thing, but it might even match DOOM Eternal's for me, assuming the game features the same style of electro-djent that the trailer does.

It looks like a ripoff of Earthworm Jim.

Funny you say that because the animation style reminded me a lot of EWJ but also mixes of Invader Zim and that animated short Hazbin Hotel. In fact that's probably what this reminded me of the most.

Metroidvanias seem like a dime a dozen these days tho, I don't know if the energetic animation style will be enough for it to stand out.

Thread quickly turned into the reverse negative of "I don't want to play as a cis-straight white male anymore". Grow up, guys. It's just a character.

I can't help but think the dev/artist is a hentai perv with the high level of arse/underwear flashing in the even basic animations like running (and from what OP says about the twitter).

But at the same time, the game itself looks visually unique with a lot of effort put in, and could be good fun.

Is this one any good? epic store gifted me a copy but every time i watch some gameplay video it always look so confusing and with meh combat.
Its the artstyle that sells it. Combat is a bit meh yea (its pretty much a button masher) outside of bosses which are nice and epic. The story is also misleading as the meaning behind the whole "resist or embrace" premise only comes clear towards the midpoint of the game or so. And if you have chosen "embrace" up til that point you are locked out of the "good" ending. (There is an offhand mention earlier in the game how you can "resist" from the get go. But the game actually gives you no reason to do it at that point nor does it explain what "resist" or "embrace" actually implies).

Also it claims itself to be a roguelike which its not. There is no "reward" for staying alive and dying is no different from just teleporting back to your sanctuary.

Yeah the boss looked good but the normal enemies look like unispired shit tbh.

Is there at least ability\weapons\enemies veriety? were you excited to find new weapons and abilities or it's everything by the numbers?

The main character has a horrible posture. I'm feeling second-hand back and neck pain just from watching it.

Ability variety is fine. Minor spoilers though.

The entire resist/embrace thing is that you either chose to keep your normal "human" abilities or "corrupt" them into more powerful "demonic" forms (ie, the dash becomes a teleport that also lets you dash upwards, the wall run lets you cling to walls like Spiderman, etc). As the game didn't explain this very well i ended up playing it with full corruption which made the platforming really enjoyable. But i can't imagine someone enjoying it by only using the (kinda dull) human abilities

Hey call me a weirdo, but I have this thing were I don't like spending money on things that I find unappealing.

It's funny because it's likely the same people who would bitch about Returnal... and you happen to have Selene as your avatar.

I really enjoyed it and played through it twice on PlayStation to unlock the platinum. It isn't super long, but way more killer than filler. One thing that adds a bit of variety is the map slightly rearranges itself between deaths/playthroughs. Also some powerups and other elements are randomized as well so it's got a tiny taste of "rouge-like". The game can definitely get hectic in a good way. I thought it had the perfect balance of difficulty and the controls are absolutely spot on. It's true what Kadve Kadve about the game not explicitly telling you about certain choices, and though I don't fully agree, I can see their other criticisms as well. I still would highly recommend it.

That's not weird, everyone only buys what appeals to them. What would be weird is if the game was exactly the same except the player character looked like an anime sex doll and suddenly it was a really exciting title. And it's also weird when people only chime in to say, "wow I don't want to have sex with that imaginary character, how wOkE!" To be clear I'm not accusing you of that specifically, but you can already see it fomenting in the earlier comments.

I think the art style is awful, and the game regularly throws swarms at you due to the rogue-like thing the level design isn't as tight as most Metroidvanias.

The skill tree is a massive nightmare, its massive and the upgrades are painfully incremental.

If you have a copy it's worth installing to see for yourself though, it does have a few redeeming factors, but it really depends if you like the cheap looking art style or not.

To start off positive, the animations look clean and well done. The artstyle certainly is unique with personality, and the gameplay looks pretty good. However, what I feel a lot of folks in here throwing shade at people who won't play because of the main character design don't understand is that it has *nothing* to do with "wanting to fuck" the main character. It is about designing a main character that doesn't physically disgust the player. Yes there are some folks who enjoy morbidly obese characters with redneck hair cuts and danger-hair dye jobs, but it isn't for me and, I would argue, most folks. I have a similar issue with the "foot" shooter. I don't like feet and they gross me the hell out, so even if the rest of the game looks decent, I have zero interest in playing it.

Some of the children in here seriously need to grow up and move on from the tired "You just don't want to play because you don't want to fuck the main character". That has never been the point and people who can't actively debate or discuss like adults keep using that claim.

As for the "is it slacktivist-bent" question? No clue yet. I have only seen one trailer and so far we see a "genius engineer" who happens to be female create what seems to be a sex robot designed by a mentally ill person. Nothing really is "slacktivist" about that, but it does show that the creator has a blatant fetish and one that I don't wish to really join in on.

thanks, i felt the same after seeing some of the responses and you articulated it better than i wanted to put in the effort for. i would add that for me it isn't that i'm grossed out by the character, it just feels like kind of a crutch the dev is using by latching onto social trends, and playing the game i would feel as if i were going along with that. also the whole "flipping off people is cool because it's supposed to be rude" thing is just 🤦‍♂️

"Appealing to me" doesn't have to mean "I want to fuck that". It's just that if the character looks gross, I know that will affect how much fun I have with the game.

For example I've been playing Metal Gear Rising recently. I don't wanna fuck Raiden, but a cool ninja cyborg is for sure much more appealing to me than a fat lady with a bad haircut and cringe (imo) attitude.

Not saying the kind of person you describe doesn't exists ofc, but I think we shouldn't generalise in that way when someone criticices a character's design.

coming from you, a big FF fan on here, and now coming to the defense of this....

What does being a Final Fantasy fan have to do with anything? And coming to the defense of what? Not making wide generalizations based on utterly nothing because you are triggered someone may not play a game because they dislike a character design?

This game is giving me serious Gorillaz and Dead Leaves vibes. If combat is as fluid as shown then I might bite. Soundtrack seems good too

Just read the discussion, but still haven't figured out what's bothering me about this game, and it's not the fact that the main character isn't a hot waifu. First, it's too much cringe (I entered the creators Twitter and it was way worse than I thought), it gave me the same feelings that I had playing DeathSpank and hearing that stupid humor over and over. It's pretty obvious that the designers had an urge to be different and they went full on it. It's very (very) well animated, but the art, in general, it's a mess. They mixed everything they thought cool, added an "I wanna be different" (not appealing to general waifu buyers) component and called it a day. From the video alone it's not possible to say anything more, and the game could ve very well a good metroidvania with great combat. For now, the only single positive thing I can say it's about it's animation quality, and that's a component thats not enough to raise interest. The rest is mediocre at best.

I think it's in that area of DeathSpank, or Ren & Stimpy or things of that nature, pushing into areas that usually don't get pushed even by designers who aren't afraid of going too far. It's not for comedy in this case (not totally for comedy, at least, though I do think the designer is having some laughs too,) but it is designed to not go down so easy. And in some cases, even if you kind of want to give it a try, something about it can be a little tough to swallow a bitter pill without the whole thing having an all-over candy coating to smooth it out.

I can get that. It's just not for me and I was very aware of this in the moment I've finished the trailer. Hell, I've met some people that loved DeathSpank. Maybe it'll sell gangbusters, who knows...
