My daughter, who just turned 5, loves to play the new Mario Kart whenever we visit the neighborhood Target. She always plays as Bowser Jr in the monster truck, always has a blast, and often finishes in the top half after every race. This game is proving to be much easier than MK8 Deluxe, which we play often, and where she struggles to not finish dead last.
Personally, I am loving what I've seen so far, and I greatly enjoy all the new ideas MK World introduces, from the Tony Hawk tricks to the Happy Meals to the long highway road trips. I'm one of those who wouldn't be interested in simply having a fresh set of MK8 courses, and this is probably where the fan divide currently lies.
Again, I have not played thing the entire game, have not tried online races, and have only played a handful of demo courses. But I do have a fair sample of the full experience, and I can understand and respect the criticisms from many fans. Controversy should be expected when a long-running franchise shakes up the established formula. We'll have to see where things stand after a year or two, after the dust has settled, after Nintendo has made some revisions, and when Nintendo offers a full DLC update, which we all anticipate.
I wasn't too excited for Switch 2, and I haven't really been excited for a console launch since Nintendo Wii and Sega Dreamcast. It's wiser to wait a little while for the software library to grow before making the jump, especially when dealing with a "sequel" console. But here I am, already telling myself to put $50-$100 aside every month, searching EBay to see what a Switch 1 (Animal Crossing design) sells for these days, and possibly looking for a big Christmas present for my daughter. I do hope the MK World bundle is still available by December.
So, long story short, this is a great videogame. It gets me excited and makes me want to buy the new system, so it has done its job. Where will this Mario Kart rank in the overall franchise? Too early to tell, but I'm loving it so far.
PS: I've been playing Mario Kart 64 on OpenEmu lately, using a third-party N64 controller. Either my skills have evaporated or this game has aged like warm milk. I have no idea what's going on there. Oh, well, looks like it's back to Mario Bros Encore on Atari 5200, hah.
