Gah!

This thread didn't have a Blinx warning! From the title of the thread I thought I was safe ...

You are more offended by Blinx than that hideous render of a humanoid fox? Whoever did that render should be forbidden from doing any sort of art for a game.

The eyepatch is upsetting, but the fact Blinx can disturb *without* being hideously rendered makes Blinx far more dangerous.

But imagine the person responsible for the fox rendering Blinx ...

<shudder>

Urgh, please. I almost replied to the topic with "First person to post Oni Link gets spat on", then decided no one's taste could possibly be that bad. I overestimated you.

Unless it was another joke post like Blinx. That's it, right?

No, I'm serious. Although I'll not deny my judgement being clouded by my extreme love for Majora's Mask.

Oni Link looks like something Todd McFarlane crapped out after one too many curries the night before.

Oni Link fits right in with IGN's "Ganon murdering Zelda" version of cool.

Take whichever insult is worse.

Eyepatches are only upsetting when they're the non-transparent, non-motorized type.

did they just took some dried fruit , stick 2 eyes to it and call that a character !? ..

Yeah, maybe. That's from one of the most quotable sci-fi scenes ever. The setup and delivery of the line as well as line itself *crack me up* every time I happen across it on TV. In fact, if it's anywhere close to this scene, I'll just watch the movie until it comes up, even though I have the DVD.

The Boss is a really striking character. Not so much because of her appearance per se, but in the way she's presented, she just exudes power and a certain aura that is immensely cool.

The boss is a she????

I'd have to go with The Boss, too. I mean, finally, an awesomely powerful and capable female character in a game that doesn't whore herself out every chance she gets, yet has the passion and care of a motherly figure. The thing about her exuding an aura of power and confidence is right on. She's neither a whore, nor a bubbly GIRL POWER ditz. Someone finally got a female character right (though what's-her-name from SH3 was pretty good, too, and there's always Samus, but her roles are traditionally unspoken...obviously, The Boss is the most fully fleshed-out character).

Meh, the light suit was neat but i prefered the dark suit and the phazon suit a hella lot more than the light one. I didnt like her helmet, if they had followed one of Andrew's sketches of the light armor it would have been a whole lot better imo.

The Dark Suit just doesn't look right to me. I think it's the HUGE shoulders.
If you flip between the 3 suits in your inventory, the light suit is the best looking and most sleek.

Phazon Suit is average at best.

don't want to turn this thread into a "which of samus' suits is the best" kind of thread, but the varia suit is and always will be the best design.

Oh yeah and I retract my fat Link on the cake as the best character design ever and change it to the above.

Hey, no fair posting the worst official Sonic artwork ever produced. :P

But seriously, when it comes to video game characters, Sonic's design is top-notch. It's simplistic, like radioheadrule83 showed in his port, in a Mickey Mouse/Felix the Cat kind of way. It's also a very appealing design.

Here's a snippet of an interview dealing with the creation of Sonic:

[Sega President] Nakayama posed a challenge to his entire company: come up with a mascot for the company, one that could star in a game that would show off the power of its new system and sell over a million units. Nakayama wanted a universally-recognized character that could personify his company. He wanted a character that was to Sega what Mickey Mouse was to Disney. He wanted a character that would put Sega ahead of Nintendo.

He got exactly that.

The challenge was answered by Sega's AM8 division (later renamed Sonic Team --- aha!). A 15-man group, AM8 spent several months toying with many character submissions from within the company (just about every animal, from rabbits to kangaroos, was being considered -- one Sega of America exec was hell-bent on it being a squirrel, largely based on his affinity for Rocky & Bullwinkle). The original game concept was to have a speedy character that could pick up and throw objects at enemies, but the mechanism of picking up objects proved too complicated and was dropped in favor of a character who simply rolled and plowed through his enemies. But a rolling ball didn't seem quite lethal enough, so the concept of spikes was introduced. This narrowed the potential animal candidates to two: an armadillo or a hedgehog. The hedgehog ultimately won and a character, code named "Mr. Needlemouse," was born.

Also, from a design standpoint, its a good idea to design a character that can be immediately recognized in a silhouette. For example, look at Micky Mouse, or Mario, or even Spongebob Squarepants, and imagine them as if all you could see is their outline - still instantaneously recognizaable. This was a technique used by Matt Groening when he developed the family on The Simpsons. Sure it may seem 'old hat' to everybody nowadays, but Sonic remains a very popular character among young kids even today. And I can tell you its not based on the quality of his recent games, that's for sure.
