While enjoying my Dirty Harry boxset, I wonder - are there any other good cop movies sharing the same vibe, funk music (except Shaft movies) minus of course Clint Eastwood famous grin :D

99 and 44/100% Dead

i shit you not, that is the title. features a pretty hot pair of cans named baby, and the only REAL irish action hero, Harry Crown.

crazy-ass shooting glasses and guns akimbo.
its set in 'the future', but its actually 70s america.

'pass us a bottle of the ole irish'

Bullitt -- '68, but it's close enough. Steve McQueen at his finest and a car chase that created the mold for all that followed.

Black Rain

There was this one damned cop movie I haven't been able to find, I think its from late 70's-early 80's, and takes place in NYC(?) Chinatown. I only remember the main character eventually falling in love with this Chinese chick, and also I think he was being investigated by Internal Affairs. Maybe a train track scene too.

Wouldn't 'Chinatown' with Jack Nicholson be considered a cop movie?

Also, try a few of the Death Wish (Charles Bronson) movies. Has a similar vibe to the Dirty Harry movies.

black rain is fantastic, and of the most underrated movies ever.

You're probably talking about Year of the Dragon with Mickey Rourke. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090350/

Edit: dang, beaten to that one.

the french connection.

The same director (Friedkin) also did To Live And Die In L.A. quite possibly my all time favourite cop movie. Yeah it's somewhat outdated in a way that it just oozes the 80s from its every pore (think acid wash jeans that look like they'd glow in the dark and an unbearably cheezy soundtrack) but on the other hand it's just so in your face, brutal, uncompomising and also what's best about it completely throws the ol' good guys bad guys cliche out of the window. The characters in this are actually flawed and vulnerable and as a result virtually everyone gets fucked in the process. God I love this flick
