I am looking for nature/landscape type photos to accompany music for Youtube.

I tried looking into this before and got confused and gave up. It seems like a minefield.

Are you allowed to profit or manipulate any photo off a site like Shutterstock? https://www.shutterstock.com/

I'm not sure... but if I am paying I can do anything I want with the photo?

Anyone know about this stuff?

My understanding is "free" is never really free

You can do anything with them you like as long as I get a credit. I'll DM the link if you are interested.

They have been used in all kinds of places, printed books, Wikipedia, news websites, TV documentaries,
student projects for me that's fine.

I'd draw the line if people made printed posters for sale or they were used in a huge advertising promotion but for illustration purposes as part of a bigger work that's no problem. For me personally.
