Could Revolution Impact Sony's Strategy

With all this talk about artificial shortages with 360 to create hype the PS2 launch is constantly being brought up. There were too few PS2's at launch and this spurred high demand for the console, some deuches even paid close to 1k for PS2s over ebay. It's becomming evident that perhaps these companies are purposely shipping less in order to garner hype and attention.

My question is, with the Revolution most likely launching in the same general time frame as the PS3, will Nintendo's console prevent Sony from purposely under shipping? If a kid walks in to buy a PS3 only to find that they are sold out and he wont be able to get one for ATLEAST a couple weeks, what are the chances he will walk out with a Revolution instead?

If someone walks into a store with the express purpose of getting a PS3, they will walk out emptyhanded before walking out with anything else. But in the hypothetical scenario that they had to buy something, odds are they would spring for the Xbox 360 first.

That sounds like an excellent idea. Sony, Nintendo, you know the formula for success. Next holiday, see to it that no consoles are available.

IAWTP. The 360 is much more similar to the PS3 than the Revolution. And it will probably be cheaper by then.

Nintendo will be more concerned with wrestling Second Place back from Microsoft before they move on to Sony. ;)

Thats the truth right there although im sure microsoft is going to be pushed into third place, sony will still topple nintendo next generation simply because it has an established fanbase as does nintendo but sony's is way bigger (and playstation made it hip to play computer games) because you got people who want GTA first day and thats only possible with a playstation.

But in saying that who knows GTA's fad might have finished by next generation just look at last generation when there was goldeneye imagine if all of EA's bond games did gta number ... anyway anythings possible but dont quote me on GTA not doing same numbers unless it happens.

Hey N. Fans, this reality calling. You guys don't matter. See you again in another year or two to rub it in again.

People could have bought a Dreamcast in 2000 (or 4 or 5 with what some were paying for PS2s), but Sega had an awful Christmas that year. I think if everyone decides that they MUST have a PS3, most are not going to settle on anything else.

That's a big no there. You actually expect MS to lose marketshare with the 360?

And do you actually expect Nintendo to lose marketshare with the Revolution? The gap between the two is so narrow it won't take much for posistions to change. Its totally possible for the 360 to gain marketshare and still be beaten by Nintendo.

Personally, of all the next-gen consoles, I can't figure out where the 360 is suppose to get its gains from.

MS is hoping to take share From the PS3. Ken needs to stop making imperial statements of grandeur and just start destroying 360 hype now. I do think Sony has gotten a bit arrogant. They would never have let MS get away with what they are doing now had this been the PS2.

What are they letting them get away with?

Sony hasn't shown their hand yet. All they've done until now is try to beat the X360 at a couple of key moments (especially E3). There is a lot we don't know yet about the PS3 and we haven't seen much new things since E3, except for MGS4.

I think Sony knows that it's hard to kill X360 sales this year as the PS3 is not yet an alternative for the holidays and the fans or hardcore gamers will buy it anyway.

The months after December though, those will be interesting and very important to MS. And it seems like Sony is targetting those months to really start the PS3 hype with CES in January (don't know if they'll show / announce much there though) and of course the big PS3 event in February.

Whether they'll be able to keep the hype train running until launch, depends on the launch date of course, but I could see them launching in June in US, right after E3, and a bit earlier in Japan. Whether they're able to make those dates though...

Edit: I did expect a PS2 price drop though as it is the PS2's last Christmas without PS3 and it could really help software sales I think.

I didn't call, and no I don't!

Exactly. right now MS have everything to prove. I think the technical underpowered issue will bit them in the back.

You arent going to hear much about PS3 since Sony know PSP and PS2 will dominate this christmas anyway.

Yes. Sony in big trouble now!

There were no Sony fans back then. They hadn't done a console. Dur! Also, they weren't launching their console with a REMOTROLLER.

Who gives a flying fuck what it impacts?!?! It's shit like this that makes me regret being a Nintendo fan.

All I know is that next fall, I'll be walking out of VGP with a PS3 and a Revolution to go along with my Xbox 360. It's about the games, people.

Do you realize what Sony and Microsoft are going to do with your money? By supporting them with your business, yoiu are aiding them in their effort to hurt Nintendo. You don't want to hurt Nintendo, do you?

Nintendo cannot defeat Microsoft if the following five conditions hold constant.

1) Nintendo console owners do not purchase third party games.
2) Nintendo has an inadequate first party console release schedule.
3) Third parties give the off-beat side projects, then port the commercially viable stuff to the Playstation or Xbox platforms.
4) Many Nintendo franchises, like Donkey Kong, Kirby, Starfox, F-Zero, Fire Emblem, etc. aren't selling as well as they could be. Some of them aren't scoring well, either.
5) Nintendo's image in the gaming public remains the same.

That's the point -- everyone thinks Nintendo doesn't stand a chance, just as everyone thought Sony would fail. Markets have a way of surprising people with quick turnarounds.

That having been said, there's no way that Nintendo will experience the same kind of rise to the top that Sony did in the upcoming generation. If it happens, it would be way in the future.

The Revolution impacting Sony's strategy? That's interesting since the exact opposite is what happened in reality. You think if Nintendo was the market leader they would be trying to release something like the Revolution? I doubt it, they'd probably be releasing a more conventional console with a variation of a more conventional controller.

Xbox 360 I won in the Pepsi contest. Would have bought it for PDZero, even if I had to sell vital organs/fluids.

PS3 will be my Blu-Ray player, with the occasional game being purchased for it.

Revolution will be my most played system because of Zelda, Metroid, Mario, and Fire Emblem.

I know where my priorities lie. :)

Besides, I'm not like alot of you guys on these boards, in that I only buy maybe 4 games tops a year. I don't play very much, so going by what I wrote above, maybe then it'll make more sense.

How about we all buy the system(s) we like and not pay attention to sales figures.

Weren't you paying attention to gahiggidy? We're helping to hurt Nintendo when we do that.

I had no idea. Everything I once believed in... my whole world... crumbling.

I'm afraid.

Nope. Its clear that EAD has pretty much gotten bored with traditional consoles and control (see: ho-hum GCN output). The new controller is something that will really ignite thier imaginations.
