Cranberry juice and middle ear infections
The value of cranberry juice in urinary tract infections is well known. New evidence from a US study suggests it may also benefit respiratory and ear infections caused by Hemophilus influenzae. Although this organism is common and resides in healthy people's throats (75% of children and adults), it may be responsible for up to 40% of cases of otitis media (middle ear infection). The effect was studied in vitro, and both the juice and substances called proanthocyanidins derived the juice bound and inhibited the organism. This does not, however, necessarily mean it will have clinical benefit. Only strains of H. influenzae that bore surface structures called pili were affected. Children are often immunised now against the dangerous H. influenzae type B. The mechanism of action seems to be similar to that which inhibits Escherichia coli bladder infections.
