Creating an 80s/early90s playlist

Status
Not open for further replies.
EDIT: Okay let's change it a little. Initially this was mostly 80s with a little overlap. Let's make it a little more lenient. Concentrating on the 80s, a bit of 70s and 90s either side.

What am I missing? Help me build this into a monument of 80s awesomeness!

You've got most of it covered (Don't You Forget About Me is essential!), although these might be worth considering:

Animotion - Obsession
Ray Parker Jr - Ghostbusters
M.A.R.R.S - Pump Up The Voume
Cameo - Word Up
Adamski - Killer

I would say Axel F as well, but the Crazy Frog has forever soiled that now.

Yazoo - Situation
Pet Shop Boys - Go West
Tom Tom Club - Genius of Love
Echo and the Bunnymen - The Cutter
David Bowie - Let's Dance
Blondie - Rapture
Slick Rick - Children's Story
M - Pop Muzik

"Wuthering Heights" was late 70s, BTW. "Running Up That Hill ( A Deal With God)" is an amazing Kate Bush single from the mid/late 80s...

You need Joy Division, Bauhaus, Killing Joke, SPK, Swans and The Cure in there.

Also: Dead Kennedys and The Pixies.

You're also going to need a metric fuckton of Michael Jackson, and some Poison won't kill you either. Styx, too.

Any 80's list without Hall & Oates isn't really an 80's list at all. Make sure to include some of their stuff.

Bruce Springsteen, Def Leppard, Huey Lewis & The News, The Bangles, and Cyndi Lauper are some other good ideas for stuff to look for.

tralfazz

Crowded House - "Don't dream it's over"
Run DMC -"Walk this way"
Grand Master Flash - "White lines"
Go-Go's- "We got the beat"

And songs off the following albums

U2 - Joshua Tree
Def Leppard - Hysteria
INXS - Kick
Cyndi Lauper - She's so unusual

Edit: Since you want songs

U2 - Where the streets have no name, Still haven't found what I'm looking for, With or Without you

Def Leppard - Pour some sugar on me, Rocket

INXS - Devil Inside, Need you Tonight, New Sensation

You need many more Duran Duran songs.. Hungry like the Wolf, Rio, etc. :)

And is Adam and the Ants the same group/person as that Adam Ant "Goody Two Shoes" song?

I was born in 1983 btw.

Those listing just bands are gonna have to be more specific. Some of this *is* new to me.
Can't believe I left off the Pixies, Michael Jackson and a few other bands though. My brain must be DYING or something. Wow.

If I'm not updating at a heavy rate it's cos its 1am here. I'll be going to bed soon, but I'm digging this, I'll carry it on..

There are a ton of one-hit wonders from the 80's, almost too many to list without copy/pasting from somewhere. I suggest getting ahold of the 80's Billboard Top 100 lists or spending time listening to some of the 80's shoutcast stations for song ideas.

I heading out for an early dinner. By the time I get back, I want to see some fucking Devo, Clash and Tracy Chapman on this list.

What are some good Clash songs? I know nothing from them.. well, I might know stuff from them, but just don't realize it's them.. :D

Actually, I just realized I don't know any of The Who's songs either besides the one that's the CSI theme.. I knew that one before the show, actually, heh.. what are some others?

As you can tell, I'm not a big music fan, but I enjoy it.. :D

I'm out for the night now... just edited to throw a few more in. 2am ;( knackered. Awesome stuff this though.

Any chance we could get a title edit to reflect the new leniency on the years accepted?

Good work Mr. Radiohead!

Don't forget to add Obsession by Animotion though, one of the most classic synth-lines of the 80's.

God bless you Radiohead. You made my day. I was going through my library for stuff and posted Living Colour. I went back and listened to them again and forgot how great they were and how much I loved them. Ahead of their time. I wish they were still alive and kicking. If the producers of Hit Me Baby are listening put this group on the show at all costs. Maybe they will reform.

I just found that out! I was doing some snooping on the internets. I'm looking forward to hearing it. I had no idea, after 8 years you tend to give up on a band and it sure didn't get any press.
