Creepy unsolved/paranormal/strange events thread

Sorry Mulligan, but pics or it didn't happen. These days, there's hardly a person, especially one literate enough to use the internet who doesn't have a cell phone with some kind of camera on it. If you were in such a place, I would've been snapping pictures constantly, and using my phone's flashlight app when not taking pics. Then once you started hearing noises, I'd be switching to video mode, and trying to get as much audio as possible.

That's the problem I have with almost every paranormal story I hear/read, it's always someone's story, but that's all they can offer. When there are pics of a paranormal event, they look fake or staged. I would've been snapping a photo every step I took, especially if I went to the length to actually go inside, even before anything creepy happened.
The house probably still exists. Maybe he and his friends can make a second trip and document it. >:)

Are you kidding me?
Seriously?
I've been in some ghost situations and I've never thought of turning on the camera out of sheer terror I'd have.

Lol.

That couldve happened years ago. He never specifically says when. Maybe it happened many years ago?

I wish I did more stuff like that when I was younger. Ive had some scary thing happen but its mostly noises or unexplained happenings. Nothing pants crappingly scary.

I'm not a debbie downer, I'm just usually a very logical thinker.

Even if this was a few years, how many years are we talking? He's a junior member, so I'm kinda thinking he might not be that old in years. He says they were driving, so I'm thinking it probably wasn't 20 years ago based on the average age of the gaf users. I'm assuming the oldest this story was is 5-6 years ago, even a poor person like me had a camera cell phone back in 2005-2006.

For him to remember it in such detail though, I was kinda assuming it took place not that long ago. Assuming it's true at all.

A scary story told on the internet may not be true? Holy shit get Rupert Murdoch on the phone now!

Seriously though just take it as entertainment if it makes you feel better about it. I'll give Mulligan the benefit of the doubt, at the very least it made for a good story.

I'm a generally logical thinker too, but I mainly like to keep that in the Logical Thinking |OT|.

When I'm in the Creepy unsolved/paranormal/strange events thread, however, I like to read creepy stories and let my imagination take over for, you know, fun.

Good story Mulligan (but next time bring a courtroom artist to sketch the scene, plz. ;D ).

But would you be mad if nobody believed you?

Though given that this is a thread dedicated to unexplained events I'm not going to shit it up by criticizing stories and saying "pics or didn't happen."

I must've missed in the thread's title where it said it was fictional then. Because I came here to read about real accounts of Creepy unsolved/paranormal/strange events.

Hint: there aren't any, because there's no such thing as a real paranormal event. They're for fun and entertainment, not for self-proclaimed "logical thinkers" to dissect and pat themselves on the back about.

How long's it been since anyone brought up Grinning Men?

The Grinning Man is a name given to a mysterious creature that has been reported in various areas over the last century.

He is believed to either be an alien or some other type of unknown creature. If nothing else, he is very creepy and all the witness accounts describe him as being very strange. Everyone who has seen him will never forget him or what he looks like. Nobody knows if there is just one Grinning Man or many, or if the whole thing is just an urban legend.

One account of the Grinning Man happened in October 1966. Two boys in NJ were walking along Fourth Street, and when they reached a corner parallel to the NJ Turnpike, one of the boys, James Yanchitis, could see a strange figure standing on the other side of a fence. He nudged his friend, Marvin Munoz, who then noticed the man too. They both describe the man as being “a really big man with a big old grin”. Allegedly, another resident in the neighborhood claimed to have been “chased by a tall green man” down that very same street.

John A. Keel, a well-known paranormal investigator and author of “The Mothman Prophecies”, visited the boys a few days later to speak to them about their incident. He interviewed each boy separately and they both gave the same exact story. The man, they claimed was more than six feet tall and was dressed in a green coverall costume. The costume even appeared to be shimmering in the street lights. There was a black belt around his waist. Neither boy noticed any hair, nose, or ears on the man, just two, beady eyes and a really big grin.

There were other, similar reports of such a strange man in other parts of the country, including on in Parkersburg, WV, which is about 40 miles away from where the mothman sightings took place. In Nov. 1966, Woodrow Derenberger was driving home in his truck when he heard a crash. Out of nowhere, a vehicle came zooming up behind him and quickly passed him up. After passing him up, the vehicle slowed down and stopped, blocking the road. The witness noticed that it was the strangest vehicle he had ever seen, and described it as looking like a “kerosene lamp chimney”. It apparently was flaring at each end, and the ends were narrow. The vehicle had a large bulge in the center.

All of a sudden, a strange, tall man stepped out. He was described as being “really tall and tanned”. Derenberger claimed that the man had a “gleaming green” outfit on, similar to what the boys in NJ noted. The Grinning Man alleged communicated with Derenberger telepathically and asked him strange questions about UFO sightings in the area. The entity then, telepathically, revealed his name to be “Indrid Cold”.

There have been other reports of a strange, grinning man, including on in Point Pleasant, WV, where the mothman sightings took place. Nobody knows for sure who---or what---this strange man was, or why he was here. Of course, he could just be an urban legend. Or, he could’ve just been an ordinary, albeit strange man. There haven’t been any more reported sightings of him as of late. Whenever he had been around in the past, there were usually UFO sightings or crypto sightings such as Mothman. He couldn’t be associated with the Men in Black, since he supposedly wears a shimmering green outfit.

Here's the best summation of the phenomena I've found: http://mysteriousuniverse.org/2011/05/the-grinning-man-alien-apparition-or-mib/

Story seems odd, and a little cliche, until you think about the sheer distance between the reported incidents - both in terms of actualy distance and the individuals who reported them. It's easy to dismiss the Grinning Man as another "little green men" hoax, until you notice the odd, little details.

Actually, my friend did record a video from his phone and was using it as a back up/secondary light source but when we checked the video after it was pitch black and the sound quality was bad but you could make out us joking about the doll and the first thud sound, it was only a short video. My phone was crappy at the time, no video and the camera was weak so it would have been pitch black and honestly it didn't really cross my mind, you're just gonna have to take my word for it I'm afraid. I'm not sure if I could convince my friends to make a return with a proper VCR. :p

It was a creepy paranormal strange event, the decision to question it or believe it is up to you. That said this would be a pretty short and uninteresting thread if every event in it had to be proven to your satisfaction.

HOW CONVENIENT

Not 'creepy' in the traditional sense, but I had an incredibly vivid premonition about Rio Ferdinand's goal before the England vs Denmark match at the 2002 World Cup.

shown at the start here

I described the goal in detail to a friend an hour or so before the match started, including the time, the corner from Beckham, and the downward header from Ferdinand at the back post and the goalkeeper fumbling the ball over his own line. When England won that corner I said "this is it", and it happened exactly how I 'saw' it and described it.

The feeling was so strong before the game I decided to place a bet. Ferdinand was 50-1 before the game as the first scorer, with double odds for a first-time bet with new telephone accounts with a certain bookmaker. I placed a bet of £10 and won £1,000. I was so convincing in my description of the goal that my friend also bet £5 and won £500. We had to wait a nervous week before claiming our money because the press association (who bookmakers take their results from) initially credited the goal as an own goal to the goalkeeper, so bookies were initially paying out on Michael Owen being the first scorer. Eventually (to our relief!) they payed out on both Owen AND Ferdinand.

It was an incredibly weird experience, and quite unnerving, but I remember being absolutely, totally, 100% convinced that the goal would happen exactly as I described it. I always regret not having the courage of my convictions and betting a much larger initial sum. Unfortunately I've never had anything like this happen since, but my life has been peppered with occasional odd 'coincidences' and very strong deja vu incidents.

This particular incident left me in no doubt whatsoever that unexplained incidents like this may be grounded in fact rather than caused by over-active imaginations, and that there is much we don't know about the human mind.

The mention of fun reminded me of this goofy paranormal story.

http://paranormal.about.com/od/timeanddimensiontravel/a/time-travelers_2.htm said:
One night in 1972, four coeds from Southern Utah University were driving back to their dorm in Cedar City after spending the day at a rodeo in Pioche, Nevada. It was about 10 p.m. and the girls were eager to get back to their dorm before curfew. They were traveling along Highway 56, which has a reputation for being "haunted." A while after taking a fork in the road that turned to the north, the girls were surprised to see that the black asphalt had turned into a white cement road that eventually ended abruptly at a cliff face. They turned around and tried to find their way back to the highway, but soon became concerned about the unfamiliar landscape - red canyon walls that gave way to open grain fields and pine trees, which they had never encountered before in this part of the state. Feeling completely lost, the girls felt some comfort when they approached a roadhouse or tavern. They pulled into the parking lot and one of the passengers poked her head out the window to get directions from a few "men" coming out of the building. But she screamed and ordered the driver to get out of there - fast. The girls sped off, but realized they were being chased by the men in strange, tri-wheeled, egg-shaped vehicles. Speeding again through the canyon, the girls seemed to have lost their pursuers and found their way to the familiar desert highway. The reason for the scream? The men, she said, weren't human.

I always remember it because of the goofy sounding egg cars.

I like the stories of slipping into other dimensions, universes, times, etc. They remind me of the Twilight Zone.

You're going to have to do better than that Mulligan, you're going to have to return with 7 super high HD cameras with 3 hour spanning battery power like that of the ones in Cloverfield, narrate everything going on and make sure it's packed with some explosions and don't show the creature or ghost, that might get cheesy.

I absolutely ruined the Grinning Man story for myself... I imagined the "just two, beady eyes and a really big grin" and my mind added Trollface to the guy. Try being scared of that.

Sounds like you can manipulate luck or something like that.

I used to think I could completely know every time I would strike a critical hit in WoW, I knew it was going to happen.

That is such an awesome story, Mascot, damn.

The only thing that comes close to that that I've experienced is this, and I can't stress how ridiculous this will sound. I was playing WipEout with a friend online on the map Sol 2, and suddenly I had an overwhelming feeling that he was about to get a quake. (For those who haven't played, it's a weapon that sends a wave of fire over half the track, and it's inescapable) It wasn't just "hmm, no one's had a quake in a while, bet he'll get one soon." It was "Oh fuck oh fuck, I need to get to a weapon pick up." I had no weapons to protect myself with and I was shitting myself that he'd quake me before I got to a weapon pick up.

Anyway, I heard the quake coming as soon as I flew over a pick up and shielded myself. And I know, often people get weird thoughts which, if then come true, they make a big deal about like perhaps I am, and if they turn out false then the person forgets instantly. But this time, even if my friend didn't get a quake, I would have thought to myself "holy shit that was weird" and it would probably take me a while to shake the feeling of fear / certainty that I had about it.

Oh god this post is ridiculous. Please no one quote this.

Hah, I can't drive down a lonely country road at night anymore without looking on the side of the road for extraordinarily tall, blank-faced hitchhikers.

You shall regret it for eternity.

I've only ever had one 'paranormal' experience, when I was much younger.

I woke up suddenly one night with my door wide open (I always shut it and it was one of those old latch doors). I look out on the landing and see a white figure several metres away. I nearly shit myself and hide under my covers for what felt like an eternity, before peeking out and seeing nothing there.

Now I'm older I just put it down to imagination, some reflection from the moon, or whatever.

Deja Vu is the fucking worst sometimes. I got it during a game of TF2 a few weeks back, but I had never ever played TF2 before. It was so odd knowing that it had never happened, yet feeling almost certain that it had.

Fuck Deja Vu, next time I get that feeling I'm going to do something extremely erratic and different to fuck with the timeline.

I'm diggin' the posts regarding déjà vu. How often does it happen to those that have experienced it? I experience it at least once a month. My family and friends think I'm crazy whenever I have a moment. In my head everything is exactly as it had been: thoughts, expressions, sounds. I swear, I could tell everyone in the room what they would say and do.

I do wish I had an experience like you, Mascot. I would've put the house down on a premonition like that.

Does anyone else here suffer from occasional/severe sleep paralysis?

sleep-paralysis.jpg

It seems an odd topic to bring up in a paranormal thread, but there have been strange and supernatural explanations for this since time immemorial. Some cultures believe that sleep paralysis is caused by a disgusting hag sitting on your chest in the night, hence the odd pressure that some people feel in that region, completely unable to look and se what's cuasing it. In the Middle Ages, sleep paralysis was explained away by succubi/incubi, demons that would sexually violate individuals in their sleep. Needless to say, the same demons were also blamed on nocturnal emissions.

Some people, myself included, get the feeling that there is something in the room with us while we're paralyzed - some presence that is constantkly out of sight (because we can't move our heads). I, for one, suffer from this once or twice a month - sometimes only a few times a year. My entire body will tingle, and I'll feel as though I'm conscious and awake. It's different from normal sleep in that i can actually will myself awake, by slowly flexing my limbs, eyelids, etc. I don't get the abnormal terror that comes with some people's paralysis, but in this state I often find myself waking up to the sound of someone laughing, or calling my name (always female - oftentimes my girlfriend, who I do not live with).

Anyone have any creepy sleep paralysis stories?

Something weird that happens to me, is street lights go off or on around me, not every one, but they'll flick on or off - usually off, when I walk close or under them. It's something odd I've noticed ever since I used to walk home at night from night classes in college. It's weird that when I get close, it goes off, then when I pass it and turn back around after so far out, it usually comes back on. It would try to make a game out of it to guess how many would go out on my way back home.

I dunno, it may just be selective reasoning, but I always found it odd. And it happens to more than a few people as well: http://www.google.com/search?q=stre...s=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

@Deified Data:

I would be stressed the hell out if I had to experience sleep paralysis 1-2x a month. I never really new what sleep paralysis was, but after reading it, it makes sense. I remember having things like this when I was a kid, when I would get really sick. I'm not sure if those episodes were sleep paralysis, or something else associated with being super feverish/exhausted, though.

Anybody have an everyday experience where they see things like all the time? For me, I seem to see the numbers 722 all the time. Whether it's a part number of a product, the time, seeing in on stuff here and there, those numbers seem to appear. It's like a sign.

here's an excerpt from my psych book about deja vu that i found interesting, because i too get crazy cases of it.

"Two thirds of us have experienced this fleeting, eerie sense that 'i've been in this exact situation before', but it happens most commonly to well-educated, imaginative young adults, especially when tired or stressed."

Fortunately, my episodes, whole recurring occasionally, aren't nearly as stressful as the most commonly reported cases. Usually people describe having an episode at least once in their life that incites an almost bed-wetting fear in them, like the devil himself is standing right out of your peripheral vision.

When I suffer sleep paralysis, my eyes are always closed, so I never suffer visual hallucinations. I may occasionally hear things, but nothing out-right terrifying (for any reason other than there inherent 'otherness'). Truth be told, the 1-2 a month thing was a bit of an unintentional exagerration. A few times a year is more accurate, though I suppose that's still quite accute for something that only happens to most people once. It's allegedly caused by poor sleep patterns, which may be a possibility for me. It explains why alot of people experience it for the first time in college.

Scientists say you're actually experiencing a portion of REM sleep, a part of sleep where most people are entirely knocked out for. So, in reality, sleep paralysis could be described as a waking dream. That being said, I rarely have nightmares, myself...why are the vast majority of sleep paralysis hallucinations described as being mind-dumbingly terrifying?

Deja Vu last week in fact. My cousin calls me to brag that he has access to the ios 5 beta. About two second into his first sentence, I cut him off and spout out the words in my head as they appeared, like some lunatic.

Silence, then he says, "ha....what the hell?" Freaked us both out a bit. Pretty cool in retrospect.

I cant say I've had too many weird things happen to me but one. Its not really scary, but it definitely kept me from sleeping in a completely dark house for a couple nights.

My wife and I were sitting on the couch watching TV. The kids were asleep, and had been sound asleep for a couple of hours. The TV was at a moderately low volume so as not to disturb our children. The cat and the dog, our only two pets were within visual sight of us. My cat, Sumo was laying on the back of the couch just above my head and the dog was curled up on the floor near my wife's feet; both asleep.

We weren't watching anything relatively exciting, probably some cooking show knowing my wife and all of the sudden, sounding like it came from the hallway behind us was this loud screeching sound that almost resembled a fox cry, but 100 times louder and almost to the point of being too loud to not cover your ears. It was brief and only audible for a half of a second, but both my wife and I jumped and looked at each other and said WTF was that?!

The strange thing is, the dog and the cat were still asleep and the kids didn't budge. I checked in and around the entire house both inside and out and saw no visible signs of any kind of an animal. I live in deep urban Phoenix that's surrounded by nothing but sprawl so the only random animals we get are the occasional dog that gets out of a back yard or stray cat.

It's never happened again, but my wife and I still talk about it every now and again. We have no idea what made the sound, we both heard it but we appeared to be the only two that heard it.

I cant say I've had too many weird things happen to me but one. Its not really scary, but it definitely kept me from sleeping in a completely dark house for a couple nights.

Thats the thing, I have no clue.

I'm not a religious man and since I dont believe in God, I have a hard time grasping the concept of entities existing beyond worm food, so I truly have no clue what it could have been. My house is fairly new, being built in 2007, so its not like it was some pipe noise or some other house malfunction. I just cant get my head around what could have made that noise.

If it's so new, it probably wouldn't be haunted, either (not that I necessarily believe in that sort of thing, but I try to keep an open mind).

Maybe a shared psychic experience between you and your wife? Sort of thing has been known to happen.
