Cruise ships docks in Haiti, passengers frolic as thousands dead 60 miles away.

"Sixty miles from Haiti's devastated earthquake zone, luxury liners dock at private beaches where passengers enjoy jetski rides, parasailing and rum cocktails delivered to their hammocks.

The 4,370-berth Independence of the Seas, owned by Royal Caribbean International, disembarked at the heavily guarded resort of Labadee on the north coast on Friday; a second cruise ship, the 3,100-passenger Navigator of the Seas is due to dock.

The Florida cruise company leases a picturesque wooded peninsula and its five pristine beaches from the government for passengers to "cut loose" with watersports, barbecues, and shopping for trinkets at a craft market before returning on board before dusk. Safety is guaranteed by armed guards at the gate.

The decision to go ahead with the visit has divided passengers. The ships carry some food aid, and the cruise line has pledged to donate all proceeds from the visit to help stricken Haitians. But many passengers will stay aboard when they dock; one said he was "sickened".

"I just can't see myself sunning on the beach, playing in the water, eating a barbecue, and enjoying a cocktail while [in Port-au-Prince] there are tens of thousands of dead people being piled up on the streets, with the survivors stunned and looking for food and water," one passenger wrote on the Cruise Critic internet forum.

"It was hard enough to sit and eat a picnic lunch at Labadee before the quake, knowing how many Haitians were starving," said another. "I can't imagine having to choke down a burger there now.''

Some booked on ships scheduled to stop at Labadee are afraid that desperate people might breach the resort's 12ft high fences to get food and drink, but others seemed determined to enjoy their holiday."I'll be there on Tuesday and I plan on enjoying my zip line excursion as well as the time on the beach," said one.

The company said the question of whether to "deliver a vacation experience so close to the epicentre of an earthquake" had been subject to considerable internal debate before it decided to include Haiti in its itineraries for the coming weeks.

"In the end, Labadee is critical to Haiti's recovery; hundreds of people rely on Labadee for their livelihood," said John Weis, vice-president. "In our conversations with the UN special envoy of the government of Haiti, Leslie Voltaire, he notes that Haiti will benefit from the revenues that are generated from each call …

"We also have tremendous opportunities to use our ships as transport vessels for relief supplies and personnel to Haiti. Simply put, we cannot abandon Haiti now that they need us most."

"Friday's call in Labadee went well," said Royal Caribbean. "Everything was open, as usual. The guests were very happy to hear that 100% of the proceeds from the call at Labadee would be donated to the relief effort."

Forty pallets of rice, beans, powdered milk, water, and canned foods were delivered on Friday, and a further 80 are due and 16 on two subsequent ships. When supplies arrive in Labadee, they are distributed by Food for the Poor, a longtime partner of Royal Caribbean in Haiti.

Royal Caribbean has also pledged $1m to the relief effort and will spend part of that helping 200 Haitian crew members.

The company recently spent $55m updating Labadee. It employs 230 Haitians and the firm estimates 300 more benefit from the market. The development has been regarded as a beacon of private investment in Haiti; Bill Clinton visited in October. Some Haitians have decried the leasing of the peninsula as effective privatisation of part of the republic's coastline."

I'm not sure I really see the issue with this. Sure it's tacky, but at the same time, it's providing an actual tangible benefit to the country.

So what are people who have paid thousands of dollars for a vacation supposed to do on that cruise ship? Are they supposed to weep and apologize for their good fortune? People die all the time all over the world. Is everyone on GAF a bad person because we're reading forums and playing video games while these deaths continue?

This x 1000. After the indian ocean tsunami, the people in those areas were begging for the return of the tourists, because guess what, they bring in money to these areas. And the western moralists sneered at people vacationing in these areas....for some reason known only to their pointy heads.

Fuck this, anyone who wants haiti to recover should be demanding that every caribbean cruise stops at haiti's ports, not criticizing them for coming.

Nailed it.

OP should bold the part about the cruise liners bringing pallets of rice and food, and pledging $1m to help Haiti.

what are these tourists guilty of?
not doing everything they can to help out the ravaged country?
how do you know they havent?
the cruise ship docking there is stimulating the local economy.
perish the thought of these people enjoying their vacation.

What about all the people at the popular resorts in the DR? That is merely 200 miles away! Those people at Sandals have no fucking shame, I tell ya.

Its good to hear that the cruise line is dealing with it in a good way (delivering food etc). If i were a passenger i dont know if i could go into town and relax though.

Gotta be honest, I'm pleasantly surprised that the replies in this thread have been rational. The thread title is shameful. It seems like the OP read the first sentence of the article and then couldn't wait to post it.

They're not. They are just relaxing on private beaches (gated from the rest of the nation) owned by a tourism company.

It wasn't the earthquake's fault, it was rich people on a cruiseship having fun instead of helping those in the event. Need to put a name and face to assign blame...natural disasters don't foot da bill.

No kidding right? i came in expecting something completely different. Everything that Royal Caribbean is doing is way beyond what i expected from the thread title. Encouraging passengers to spend money there by letting the proceeds go to the relief effort. Dropping off food and supplies (possibly excess ship supplies). The passengers comments not really selfish at all. OP title is a spectacular fail.

edit:

Thats what i meant. Came out wrong. i meant leave the ship and have a good time but the money is going to the locals and the relief stuff so it wouldnt be that bad. id probably buy a shit ton of booze and have a somber drunken evening on the beach.

To be fair, I did NOT read the whole article.

I do feel somewhat bad now.

Um, yay?

This sounds like a great thing; I'm surprised the OP tried to put any negative spin on this at all with the thread title. Same for the people on the ship who feel guilty about enjoying their time there. Hello, the money you paid the cruise line IS helping the people of Haiti. Get off the high horse, eat a hot dog and down some drinks already.

Yeah I agree!!!

I mean it might look superficial to angry internet haters out there who only see a Cruise line delivering people for their vacation, but just think about all the money those people are going to spend at gift shops, and excursions, and food joints that could go to helping the relief effort in Port Au Prince....
