Cult Horror ‘Event Horizon’ Comic Book Prequel Series Unveiled by IDW Publishing (EXCLUSIVE)

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Almost 30 years after it spooked cinemagoers in 1997, Paramount's cult horror "Event Horizon" is getting its first expansion.

Rather than hitting screens, however, "Event Horizon: Dark Descent" is an official comic book prequel series from IDW Publishing, with the first issue hitting shelves in August.

The five-part series will, according to the publishers, "embrace the hard-R rating" of the movie and "terrifying cinematic universe" created by director Paul W.S. Anderson and writer Philip Eisner. Taking place before the events of the film, the comics will tell the story of the final fate of the original Event Horizon crew and ask, what really happened to Captain Kilpack and the first crew as their ship journeyed across a nightmarish realm of torments beyond imagining?

Might be cool, but honestly not knowing what happened to them (aside from that cut montage in the movie) is probably infinitely more scary.

Not everything needs explaining.

I recently rewatched the movie and, damn, it didn't age very well. Too many explosions and lame scenes, like rescuing a guy who got sucked into space. The only remotely creepy scene was the recording with the screams of Event Horizon's crew.

Loved the movie, love IDW comics,

It was campy at the time. It was just good camp.

It's still PWSA's best movie, although I'd listen to an argument for Soldier.

man when paul ws anderson was announced as director of the resident evil movie i thought it was going to be an event horizon esque horror movie that takes place in the mansion with like jason isaacs and sam neil and shit then look what he made

And right there is the problem. He makes a Resident Evil film, and easily the most memorable scene involves zero zombies or infected creatures of any kind. And ironically it's the least worst of his entire series, as the movie would then go to be entirely about Alice while all the game heroes existed to be her cheerleaders and the director might occasionally let one of them kill a zombie or something, but only after Alice has killed twenty recently and had another revelation making the story even more about her somehow.

Not anything benefits from a prequel, though. Not knowing the specifics is part of what makes Event Horizon what it is: campy sci-fi horror goodness.

Funniest thing is that the movies still made a lot of money. So a lot of people liked them anyway.

RE1 for me is a very enjoyable flick. I rewatch it once in a while and I like it not just because all of its sequels are lame. The first zombie encounter is cool and tense, there are some nice horror bits (like with the zombie from the flooded room or the sister encounter) and the soundtrack is superb.

Resident Evil 1 & Event Horizon where pretty damn good movies when they first came out, especially EH, i seen that one in a packed cinema and it was a glorious experience, scared the shit outa everyone, loads screams and synchronised panic jumps

Most viewers probably don't know the source material that well. Resident Evil games are popular for what it is, but they're not doing GTA or Mario Kart numbers.

Even if I wasn't a fan of the games, the films continued to plummet in offering anything remotely entertaining. The second film could arguably be enjoyed as a campy film, but after that it just got embarrassing.

"My name is K-Mart because that's where they found me."

And god, the third movie with the whole "the T-Virus is making all the water vanish! How? Where is it going? Fuck if we know, it's just making it all go away! I'm sure this massive worldbuilding detail will stay relevant throughout the whole series, and not practically be forgotten in the very next film!"

Is Alice a classic Mary Sue?

I watched Event Horizon in cinema back in the day and re-watched it multiple times. A nice space horror flick with some memorable scenes. Especially the most important one: How wormholes work.
Always wanted a sequel, so this comics are at least something!

I watched Event Horizon because someone said "It's like Dead Space." around when Dead Space came out and it didn't do much for me. I watched it again about two years ago and I was really bothered/scared-feeling after watching the movie. I had been thinking a lot more about demons/extra-dimensional beings/machine elves since I saw it the first time.

Milla Janovich is married to him, so he went with the "happy wife, happy life" route over pure artistic vision :P

Fuck this movie is so goddamn awful. I wish I could understand why these movies made so much money, I just can't wrap my head around it.

Then again, I also despise Avatar and Transformers, so what do I know?
Paul W.S. Anderson is a MASTER at delivering a medium budget, high spectacle film that plays well overseas. I wish he was more prolific these days, he can teach the bloated budget folks at DC and Disney a thing or two. Alas, I think Monster HUnter tanking during covid might have gotten him as well.

No! Google tells me there is a NEW Milla/Anderson collab!! And Bautista!

I would love a movie on this.
They could follow the launch then the space flight to neptune then the engaging of the gravity drive and have a crew member in stasis or something and is unaffected by the blood orgy but has to witness it and hide from it ect to make it work in the plot

Yea considering the "proper" Resident Evil movie they recently made bombed quite hard.

The movie series' popularity set the course for the games as well. A lot of people credit RE4 for the series leaning more into action but the movies were also a major influence. RE4 even has the laser room for literally no reason lol

Hopefully Zach Cregger gets it right for the next one.

Ah yes Event Horizon, a guilty 90's pleasure along with In The Mouth of Madness. A Sam Neill madnessthon.

The movie where no one at NASA has heard of Latin.

I bet they could use AI to restore and put that infamous cut footage back into the movie now like what peter jackson did with the beatles stuff
