Custom Robo sequel cancelled by Nintendo

Well, depending how far along it was, it probably would've come out next year sometime. That dev team can probably be put to better use doing something for DS or for Revolution which clearly will be leading platforms for Nintendo by that time.
Also, we have to figure that a new Game Boy is in the works and maybe it's going to hit in early 2007 or even late 2006 alongside Revolution? Anything is possible with Nintendo at this point in time. Nothing Nintendo has been doing lately has really been expected by anyone inside the industry.

That's sort of a contradiction. Most people are just expecting Nintendo to come out with a new GameBoy...just because...but yet you say Nintendo has been doing the unexpected. With the Nintendo WiFi just starting for NDS, it still struggling for superiority with PSP in NA/Europe, it basically standing for the "new" Nintendo and major games like PokeMon, Mana & FF:CC yet to release for it I would say it STILL has much to offer and has much life left in it.
Not closing the door on a possible "new GameBoy" or whatever, but there's certainly no rush to do it like alot of "insiders" are "expecting" Nintendo to do. I think it'd be awesome for Nintendo to not release a "next GameBoy" and continue on with GBA & NDS as their portable lines, but to release something as a mobile compliment to the Revolution since it's already so small. Nintendo was working on a nice LCD for GCN at one time, how about they adapt that to Revolution so it can double as a portable DVD player/mobile next-generation game machine? Something neither Sony or MS could do since their machines would be too big and too power consuming to do so. Playing better looking Revolution games games/Nintendo ROM's/DS media/DVD movie's on a larger screen would make for a good alternative to the PSP as well. Why buy UMD's when you can play your existing DVD's on Nintendo's new system that doubles a portable DVD player/media center?
Well, what you're describing is sort of an evolution of the Game Boy line so it's still some future device that I think these folks would be better off spending their time upon.
But you're right. It is a sort of contradiction to expect a new GBA. It's very possible that Revolution or something similar to it will become the next handheld. At some point they will offer better 3D in a handheld. My guess is that they want to stick with silicon based game delivery though.

Actually, Shigesato Itoi said April 2003 that the game was in development for the GBA. Then Miyamoto was interviewed by Famitsu in October 2004:

I think there's still hope it'll be out for the GBA or the DS soon... if it gets pushed to the Rev or something though, I'm going to write the game off.

I wouldn't be shocked if Mother 3 went to DS. There are just so many reasons to do it...

Nintendo plans certain things ahead years into the future sometimes and with constant mentions of the Revolution being small, low power consuming, etc. bla bla bla it makes you wonder if that's what Nintendo may have in mind. As if to someday merge the portable & console lines? Nintendo does have an obsession with making things smaller.
But I often wonder how they'd handle such a situation. They already have the existing GBM & NDS out there for their portable lines as well as one of their most important home console launches ever so if they were to bring out another seperate portable any time soon it could be a disaster. It would have to replace or compliment existing hardware IMO. As you said, a disc based media for a portable may not be what Nintendo wants either though...so there's problems there too. Perhaps it's just a trial/error thing like how connectivity probably led to NDS having 2 screens. Testing or rolling out a semi-psuedo console/mobile system would give the industry & consumers an idea of where Nintendo is headed in this regard? But, then there's the whole 'how to play Revolution games' in mobile form problem too. I'm thinking that this screen/mobile compliment/next GB deal would be for playing maybe more traditional games or whatever?
I know...too much if's and speculation, but I (and I think others) would LOVE to have a game system that doubled as a nice portable DVD player. This could be Nintendo's indirrect answer to PSP without distracting from (or killing off) the profitable GBA & NDS platforms as well as giving the Revolution an added feature/selling point that wouldn't be possible on competing systems.
