Dammit, I bought a polyester tie.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
I've needed some shirts and ties for work for a little while. About a month ago somebody spilled something on me that put bleach stains into one of the few shirts I did have, so the need became urgent because I no longer had enough shirts for a whole week. Today I finally had a chance to go shopping and I got a few shirts and some ties to go with them.

I picked up this great looking dark blue tie because it matched one of the shirts I was getting very well, and will go with another light blue shirt reasonably well, and has black stripes that will match it with black or dark grey shirts. I can also probably contrast it with some other shirts if I feel inclined and want some more variety. I didn't notice until I got home that it had kind of a weird sheen, but when I did I looked at the tag. 100% Polyester. Dang.

All in all I'm not too worried, it does look nice (I didn't notice it looked weird until I took a close look at it, it even feels pretty nice and doesn't immediately have that plasticky feel that cheaper polyester ties have) so I don't think I'll need to worry about how it looks when I wear it. The only thing I'm worried about is taking care of it. In the past I've just thrown out plastic ties that got stains on them, I've never worried about a $5-$10 polyester tie, but this one cost more than that. I assume they can just be dry cleaned? Does the knot area fray and become ugly because of wear and tear? Any experience is appreciated.

Plastic ties? They exist?

Plastic ties? They exist?
Polyester is made of plastic, so yes. In most stores it's harder to find a silk tie than it is to find a polyester tie. I went to a not cheap clothing store, which is why I didn't expect to have to check tags while I picked out ties. It turns out I was wrong.

Well, at least it was not a clip on tie
I worked at a place that wanted me to wear a clip on once, I absolutely refused. What's weird though, is that once they gave up on having me wear a clip on, they wouldn't let me wear a real tie.

I have a shit ton of polyester ties from the 70s. They have held remarkably well and I wear them nearly daily at my job.
Good to know. I know once the edges of a silk tie wear out they're done. But for polyester I keep imagining something like this:

Makes my skin crawl. Am I just making baseless assumptions?

There is nothing to worry about, unless the tie itself looks cheap or crappy. There are a lot of really crappy "shirt and tie" combo boxes that are sold at low-end retailers, and you can spot those a mile away. They typically include a solid, bold colored shirt, and a matching tie. Think of something Dwight on the US Office would wear. As long that is not the case, you are clear.

It shouldn't really make a difference. Polyester's main weakness is that it doesn't breathe, but that doesn't matter for a tie. The weave is probably more important. My silk ties with a loose weave wear pretty badly - the ones with a tighter weave stay tidy for longer.

So I looked in the wardrobe. I haven't worn any of these fuckers in over a decade because reasons, and I promise you they are all over 20 years old:

The one on the right is a Polyester tie; held up as well as the 3 silk ones.
