Damn, Wagyu really is good.

yeah, it's great. here in Los Angeles there was a trend to use Wagyu in everything. Wagyu burgers, tacos, etc.

it's great as a steak, not really necessary when making tacos tho

my local Costco carried Wagyu last time I checked. if you cook steaks at home, it is worth checking out.

edit: I think it's about $70 per lb at Costco. it ain't cheap, but $70 per lb is actually a great price.

A large portion of how a steak tastes comes from lots of variables. How it was raised, how it was cut, how it was prepared and cooked, what it was fed, how much it exercised etc. My sister's family raises cows, sells some, slaughters and keeps the meat for the rest. The steaks from her cows are still some of the best I've ever had, regardless of breed of cattle.

But yes, Wagyu has a propensity for being "motherfucking delicious" and I've had good experiences with it.

this is why I buy 90% of my groceries from the local farmers market.

I know some might say I'm full of shit, but the eggs you get from a local farm don't even taste or even look like the shit you buy at grocery stores.

I'll stick with my cheap ass pork steaks from Aldi's or the poor man's ribeye chuck cut of steak I get at Walmart

Haven't had it yet. I've thought about ordering the Costco wagyu that's like $1,000 for like 5 pounds and seeing if some friends would want to split the cost as a sort of splurge, but haven't gone for it yet. My sous vide skill at this point I think is good enough I'd trust myself with that expensive of a steak...probably need to convince the wife first hah.

My company's owner raises a handful of Wagyu at a time. He just treated my team to a steak lunch and it was definitely the best steak I've ever had.

I know the next steak I have is going to be unfairly judged now.

You ever have Wagyu?
In Dubai financial district. Was fucking godly but that shit is like 150$.

FYI it's relatively cheap because most of the wagyu sold in the US is not the 100% wagyu that is more easily obtained in Japan; we get cross bred beef. Although I think the whole point of the wagyu stuff is that it's super fatty, so if what we get is just as fatty then I bet you'd be hard pressed to taste a difference

Yea, I had it one time. Expensive as hell but good. Though I have to say, I still prefer a t-bone or a prime cowboy ribeye. I think it's a texture thing.

Raising Wagyu in Kansas City? Not the place I expected, I always assumed most US cattle comes from rural states like Montana or Wyoming.

I like my steaks cooked medium well so I think at my preference I dont think it makes a difference.

Aside from some steaks having bone and some boneless, I've never been able to tell the difference between cheap shit my mom bought or going to The Keg.

I'd say my fav styles of beef are roast beef/prime rib dinners where you drizzle that gravy over everything, and that stuff isnt expensive.

They absolutely baby these cows. They have a great life with a ton of open area, high quality food, and plenty of affection. But I would agree, it's not just the genetics.

Yeah, pretty interesting. It's basically his hobby I guess. And these aren't some hybrid. They have paperwork on their exact lineage. I'm gonna have to buy some off him after today.

Now you should try Wagyu with a MS12 rating. Still can't be found outside of Japan though.

Japan is at the top of my list of countries I'd like to visit. I'll absolutely be getting the very best Wagyu I can find when I go. Even if it's just 1 bite.

Looks insane.

It's been a long time, but I remember it being better. I was in my early twenties and didn't have the palate I have today. I think I could appreciate it more now.

Best Wagyu I had was not even in Japan but in Taiwan. Danny's Steakhouse in Taipei, Michelin restaurant. Best whiskey wagyu pairing I had in my life. Well worth it for the price.

Yes, when prepared correctly and with top choice cuts it's delicious.

A good ribeye is pretty damn good too, and for a helluva lot cheaper.

You forgot the brand of ketchup you slather on it.

Love it, but it's like a cut of meat; there are times to use it and times to not.

Burgers are kind of pointless for it, though the high fat does help bind them.

Honestly, just as a steak or cubed (as often done in Japan) is the best way to have it. Just melts in your mouth.

Much better in Okinawa where it comes from
I'm not sure who told you that pish. Its origins are around central Japan from the Meiji Restoration, which drew heavily from the West.

Even today, most of the wagyuu and most prized wagyuu is raised in the centreish of Japan.

I misspoke. They also raise it in Okinawa as well, which is where my brother was stationed. He said it's much better there when we tried the place in Tokyo. Even I could have cooked a better steak. I'll give it another try the next time I visit.

I would not use a sous vide for wagyu. That would be like using sous vide to cook bacon lol.

I had a low quality wagyu and it was still bananas.

I'm gonna try real pricey wagyu when i'm gonna visit japan sooner or later.

never had some. i think i never had a premium steak of any kind to be honest. if i ever make it to japan i'll definitely plan on eating a real kobe wagyu steak no matter what it costs. i hope i can make it there before meat is getting outlawed or whatever.

I'm convinced it is all a grift. When chain restaraunts advertise "wagyu burgers" then some fuckery is going down.
It is only partly in Japan. They've definitely taken advantage of the perception of it being high quality.

But in Japan is still equivalent to American/British/Argentinian beef being sold in their own countries. The meaning of wagyuu does just mean Japanese (our own country's) cow. Hell, for a while they banned even the export of the meat.

Outside of Japan, people really are running rampant presenting it as some sort of ambrosia.

Best meat on the planet. eat for taste not to fill cause can't afford it. A bit at the start of the meal, then fill up with regular meat/sides, then finish up again with the Wagyu.

A5 Wagyu is one of those things where I tell people they have to experience it for themselves. It was definitely an eye-opening experience for me when I first had it in Japan 20 years ago. My favorite way of eating it is either teppanyaki or sukiyaki.

It's not just that, cows get special food and they get massaged many hours per day to let the fat spread better, real wagyu has that characteristic look when raw that you can't find in any other type of steak, just seeing all the veins of fat is paradise for a meat lover, it looks fucking sexy even raw.
