Dark Souls 3 PC performance thread

All these people with similar pc's to mine, and it runs like garbage in some areas, with constant stuttering in most places. Turning down graphical options does nothing either.

i5 4460
16 GB ram
970.

Super weird.

Indeed. I have these specs as well.

I just started the game, only about an hour in or so and running at 1080p through my plasma TV on HIGH it is a solid 60 fps. Not a hitch. MAX doesn't seem to make a difference either, but since it looks identical to me I didn't see a point in having any needless overhead so I dropped it to HIGH. Game runs great, no crashing and is butter.

I am using Win 7 too, not sure if that matters. Sorry I can't be more help. :(

Kinda OT, is ~80c a normal temperature for an i7 4790 under full load?

Idle its around 30-50.

Using the stock fan.

80 is a little high. But not by much. If it gets above 85 during gaming then you might want to do something about it. But you can always change the fan speed on the system if you wanted to so it cools better. You did say you just cleaned out the heatsink right?

Wow I just got to
Irithyll of the Borean Valley
and my framerate went from 60fps to 45-50fps.
Are there going to be more demanding areas like this in the future?

No probably not. That was far an away the most demanding area in my experience. Still tolerable, however, but if you can maintain a solid 60 up to that point, you'll be fine after.

My wife was greeted with the "caution: invalid data detected" warning last night when she booted the game on her Japanese Steam account for the very first time. Before even having created her character. In any case, I'm happy to see them penalizing cheaters, but they have to watch out for the false positives out there.

Yes, one more. The one you mentioned and the one upcoming are the only areas that dipped me under 60fps.

Hopefully it's just people using cheat programs or something. I know someone said something earlier about disconnecting from invasions or something too many times might end in a ban. I haven't done that but a few times my game crashed while not in PVP and was worried if it did during pvp i might get penalized.

Hmm. Am I safe to continue using RTSS to ensure good frame pacing, or should I turn it off for now until more details emerge? Never disconnected from an invasion or changed any game/display files, just framerate capping.

I get FPS drops into the teens and below when I walk up the steps leading from the
Catacombs of Carthus
to the nearest bonfire. This happens even if I cap the FPS to 30. I really can't get this game to run at a stable, consistent framerate at all. SLI doesn't help at all either.

I've tried the usual fixes (moving/removing the Steam overlay files, trying to install older 360 controller drivers [I use a DS4 with InputMapper], different combination of V-sync and framerate limiters, etc.).

Thinking I should just upgrade soon.

Yeah, the one in the screenshot is most likely because of modified game files or temporary modified memory (trainer/Cheat Engine).

The "ban" you get for disconnecting too often is reversible by using the in-game item Way of White Circlet. Every character starts with one, and if it's anything like Dark Souls 2, they'll eventually respawn in the starting area after a certain number of hours.

It's 99% safe, I'd say. You aren't modifying game files (on system or in memory) in any way and it wouldn't make sense to have a system that would detect anything like that.

I hope the issue get resolved fast :(

What issue are you referring to?

Can't speak for DS3 but I used RTSS for DS2 and I was never softbanned for it after 67 hours of play time. You should be fine.

Just had my first crash after 70 hours. I was looking at summon signs around a bonfire and as soon as I hit A on a red one it crashed.

I've had two crashes in ~37 hours (the time it took to beat the game first time through)

I can't honestly say what caused it, they were in vastly different areas
Cathedral and then Lothric Castle right before the Prince fight
I feel like it may be something with a ton of summoning signs being in the area, since it was just prior to a boss door that I crashed both times.

Still, had zero issues upon reloading it, so I dunno.

i5
GTX 960 4gb
8gb DDR3
Win7 64 Ultimate

I'm getting intermittent frame drops between buttery smooth fps. I have lighting on Low, but everything else as high as it can go. doesn't seem like performance is the cause.

Happened with 2 out of 103 invaders for me so far. Also happened 2 times during coop. Not really a massive issue, just sporadic connection problems I guess.

It never happened in DkS 1, 2 or SotFS - no matter how hard the lag was.

Seems like a bug. I hope they fix it.

I don't seem to be suttering, but I (rarely) get periods where the game freezes for some 20ish seconds then continues fine. Can even happen when i'm cooping, as host or summon, and i don't drop connection or suddenly laggy.

So more importantly, I'm not the only one in the wolf covenant that never ever ever gets summoned, right? I've literally sat still for an hour wearing it, attempted to invade once and failed to invade, then nothing. Getting 10 of the item to trade in is going to be awful at this rate. Awfully slow. Forever.

What issue are you referring to? I played a little bit the other night after the latest patch and the game was running very well for me. No more crashing

Just completed the game today bar NK (fuck that guy) but I got pretty much 60fps all the time at 1440 witha 5820k and 980Ti, everything on Max. I got drops to 30 exactly whenever there was a saving icon/checkpoint but otherwise it was smooth as.

Feels good beating someone who lags so much they don't even animate.
Is this problem still just me?

Have only ever seen it in co-op, and in that case only on Watchers. Where it happened like 3 times in a row and never again.

Just had my first crash after 70 hours. I was looking at summon signs around a bonfire and as soon as I hit A on a red one it crashed.

I crashed once very early in the game, I was maybe 2 hours in and most of that was trying to farm a lothric knight sword. Have not crashed even once since then in 30 hours so I dunno.

It won't log into the game server on Windows 10. It refuses, I've disabled the firewall, opened ports. Nada.

But it worked on Windows 7, I just lose the progress I made on 10...

The game doesn't have cloud saving, so if you formatted without backing up your save your progress is gone.

Can anyone else confirm whether bonfires no longer cast dynamic shadows? Some indoor bonfires such as the one at
Firelink Shrine
and
Irithyll Dungeons
cast obvious shadows before the patch that was released a few days ago. I'm thinking that may be have been one of the culprits behind bonfire crashes (which I never experienced), so they've decided to disable it for the time being.

Playing on a 2GB 660, and while I get far from a locked 60fps the fluctuations are subtle enough that it hasn't been a problem for the most part. But on certain boss fights like the D
ancer when she pulls out her 2nd blade
and P
ontiff Sulyvahn (sp?) when he summons his phantom
my FPS absolutely tanks. Seems like it might be something to do with the transparency effects? Anyway, is there something specific I can turn down to minimize this? My initial changes didn't seem to have much effect.

Edit: Threw my game down to low just to get through it. Gotta say, the game still looks pretty good even with all the bells and whistles turned off.

Any idea what's up with the shadows in this game? The only time there ever seems to be any, is if you're in direct sunlight. Any other light source though? Nope. I've also yet to see even a basic wagon wheel cast a shadow, like what was seen in the Durante performance article.

Yes, it's pretty bad, and the latest patch seems to have disabled bonfire-cast shadows at maximum settings. Only goodness knows what else they might have disabled in order to improve performance and/or mitigate crashes. As far as I'm concerned, "max" settings should enable virtually every light to cast dynamic shadows, no matter the performance cost.

Yeah,. i noticed that too. not so much post patch specifically but in general the lighting just looked so flat in areas, but in others it was praise the sun worthy.

Eh? What settings did you use for a generally locked 60 FPS? Running a 660 as well. Running max settings except with high lighting and shadows for a solid 30 FPS.

my monitor res is set to 120hz. If a game doesnt support that, the screen is dark

I have similar issues with some games (not this one, however). It has to do with screen strobing only working properly at high framerate. Try disabling any motion blur reduction or similar features on your monitor, and change your desktop to display at 60 Hz via your gpu's control panel.

Yes, it is likely motion blur reduction backlight strobing. Disabling that should take care of the issue.

I'm getting low on memory errors that sometimes crash my game. I have 8gb or ram, Win7, gtx960 4gb, an old i5.

My OS is on a small SSD with about 2gb memory left. Is this a virtual memory issue? How do I fix it?

Gave up trying to remove stutters and shit. The game goes to hell so bad near the graveyards and cathedral regardless of setting, so I leave it maxed out.

Yeah, changing settings resulted in no impact. I have lighting on low just in case of crashes, but now it's crashing anyway due to a memory leak or some shit.

Resolution is the only setting that seems to make a significant enough difference. Everything else either results in extremely small gains useful for specific situations, or is placebo at best.

Eh, runs like I imagine it would on PS4 on here, so I'm content for DS4 play. Feel like it needs to be smoother for Steam Controller play (and especially not have the FPS die when using touch menu on resolutions higher than 720p.)
