Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

Ok I got to ask this: Does the game just start up instantly for everyone here? I always have to wait 1-2 mins till it actually gets working, with or without the patch. During that time it just kind of freezes. Pretty annoying.

Sometimes it just crashes for 2-3 times on startup until actually getting going.

Past the GFWL log in? Or you mean just after you chose the save file you want to load and the start of the game? That's instant for me.

For me, it just stays in windowed mode for like 20 seconds and goes fullscreen.

When I start the executable. It's just a black windowed screen that doesn't do anything for 1-2 mins, then suddenly boots the game.

Ah, yes I get that too. I can see the bonfire flame on the left corner though. I guess the game starts in windowed mode and then goes to fullscreen mode.

That's normal. I'm not sure what it's doing at that time, but I can tell you that it renders around 500 frames at 10 FPS, issuing a single draw call per scene/present cycle.
(I've had to scroll over that part of the log file far too often :P)

Oh man the language thing is a godsend. Was getting so annoyed at reading the MM-DD-YYYY format...
Yeah, that's one of the main reasons I implemented it. DD-MM-YYYY forever!

Durante, how have you not received the best tag on GAF, yet??

You rescued this game. It went from a "I'll wait for $5 deal" to "DAY ONE" in 23 minutes time.

I was using a utility to enable borderless windowed mode but having an ini setting that forces it on start up is much more elegant solution. This thing is really become feature rich. Thanks again, Durante!

There is any chance that you can add triple buffering to your DSFix, in the future? I apologize for the pedantry, but i think that many performance problems for players equipped with AMD GPU would be solved in this way.

Thanks again Durante for the effort : ).

Another bizarre behaviour I encountered was drop on the FPS when I disable the mouse pointer with F9. I now just push it to the side.

About triple buffering: I still don't fully understand how the game manages its FPS limit / presentation interval, and until I do I won't be able to do anything about things related to vsync.

You running FRAPS? I think F9 is the default video capture key.
I was about to mention how the cursor toggling is a one-time operation that takes a couple of microseconds at most. This, however, makes much more sense.

The game definitely has some customized logic for limiting its framerate. It's pretty clear since the fps drops from 30 to 15 right away, skipping right over 20. I think they scale the time-keyed events by a factor of 2 to make up for the halved framerate. Because of this, I don't think triple buffering is possible at all. 60fps may be possible...but triple buffering? Doubt it.

You mentioned in the GI interview there's still a lot you want to do with the game. What's next on the agenda?
I don't really want to talk about it publicly because then if it doesn't work out people will be disappointed. For example, I spent at least 5 hours combined tonight and yesterday night implementing something that simply doesn't work -- I have oodles of log files, rendertarget dumps and retired code to show for it though! The windowed fullscreen and language stuff is just something I did on the side.

Still wish I could get a handle on these framerate drops (ATI). It's real annoying and there doesn't seem to be a specific pattern to it.

Windowed vs Fullscreen doesn't seem to offer a difference, nor does setting the priority to high.

Hm, already feeling the eye on you, eh? :p Fair enough, I probably should've PM'd you in the first place. >_>

I'm scared that updating the mod will make my game unplayable and loose my saves.. What's the chances of that happening? I'm on 0.4 at the moment.

I downloaded 0.5 as soon as it came out and I'm now using 0.6. Haven't had any issues like what you're afraid of myself.

I'd never say 0, but... let's just say closer to 0 than the chances that a cosmic ray will hit your computer and flip a bit, causing Dark Souls to somehow delete all your saves.

You can backup your saves just copying the folder NBGI in your documents, if you have Dropbox that's even better, you can drop it there and save it "in the cloud" :D

I have an i7-875k and GTX 580 and I'm getting 15 FPS with internal res at 2560x1440 and 1080 DOF :/. My GPU usage peaks at about 80%, if I reduce the rest to 1920x1080 I get 30 FPS. Is this normal?

Depends where you are, I have a GTX 590 and an i7-2600k OC'd to 4.8ghz and with the same resolutions as you I was getting some FPS drops in Blighttown, but constant 30 everywhere before that.

I'm near the Taurus Demon, even when I run around in doors the framerate is bad.

2560x1440
4xMSAA + SSAO

Ridiculous.
Ok so in this exact place I get 15 FPS, even without the 4xMSAA and SSAO. I think Durante said earlier he was on a 660Ti, so really I should be able to match that IQ, unless my CPU is really dragging me down.

My hardware isn't much different, i5-750 + GTX 580. My best image/performance settings are 1920x1080 internal res, 1080 DoF, 4xMSAA, and SSAO off. This gets me 30 fps most of the time.

The 1080 DOF is the performance killer. I was getting random framerate spikes on my 680 with that so I just dropped it to 540 and it's perfectly smooth.

I just upgraded from 0.3 to 0.5, and I seem to be getting a lot more crashes. Is this typical of everyone else's experience?
27 hours according to Steam and the game hasn't crashed once. Been upgrading every version along the way since the first minute of release.

It's just your PC.

Hmm haven't had a single crash in the game yet, but i didn't start using Dante's until he put up 0.3, with 0.6 though I haven't seen a single summon sign and no notes on the ground either. I doubt that caused it, but just a couple of hours ago when I got home and was still using 0.5 I saw quite a few notes on the ground. Now I can only see the ones I've left, it's very weird.

Perhaps I just keep getting put on a crappy server or something?

EDIT: and of course, after complaining after dealing with it for over an hour, things start showing up. Wonder why it happened still, but oh well. Now to get SSAO working.

Woah, I don't know why but the game is running noticeably better now with the latest version of the mod Durante. Gonna test a couple things and then report back.
