"Darkwatch" OPM Demo

It's actually pretty cool. I wasn't expecting much, but I found it to be moderately enjoyable. I also like the fact that you're a freakin' vampire cowboy and the little touches that suppliment that fact are neat (like holding R1 to "fan the revolver"). I'll post more in-depth impressions if anyone actually cares, but I just wanted to know other peoples opinion on this so far. I thought the visuals were pretty good and the gameplay was solid FPS, sort of like Halo merged with Serious Sam merged with some generic vampire game.

Discuss.

I've had my OPM demo disc for 3 days now and haven't played it yet. Maybe I'll give it a whirl later tonight.

Um. I'd like more impressions. I'm vaguely interested in this game.

ok

Here's impressions I wrote at another forum:

So I received my OPM in the mail yesterday, and the demo was really weak - it only had two playable titles, the rest videos.

So anyhoo, one of the games that was playable was called Darkwatch. I have near heard about this game until this point, but apparently it's made by SAMMY.

If you don't want to read this shit, skip down to "IN CONCLUSION"...

So what is it? Well, it's a FPS. But it seems really badass and has a great dark atmosphere. The main character is like some fucking psycho vampire cowboy, and I mean that literally he looks like a cowboy and has a crazy cowboy hat and revolvers that shoot silver bullets.

Anyway, comments on the artistic value aside, the visuals look really very good imho and the level we're allowed to play takes place in this dark cemetary with all sorts of skeleton poppin' out of the ground.

The gameplay is actually pretty good as well, surprisingly, because I've never heard of this game. The jumping mechanics are super solid and I like the "floating" mechanic (floating, like, in sort of ghostly "glide" way) that you get when you press triangle twice. Although not quite as brilliant as the jumping mechanic found in Metroid Prime, I still found it to be really awesome in its own unique way.

Like Halo, you have a "shield" that regenerates if you're not getting hit. A "blood shield" or something. And beneath that is your regular health, which you can replenish by sucking "red souls" (or blood... but skeletons don't have blood...) from your fallen enemies. Framerate seemed tight from my play time, and movement was incredibly solid and accurate - I had no problem knockin' back my foes and feelin' like a total badass doin' it. I also like the extra "cowboy touch", where if you hold R1 it'll "fan the revolver" for rapid fire.

Also like Halo, you can only hold two weapons at any time (not including "extra" accessories like Dynamite). In the demo I got a "exploding" Crossbow and my trusty silver bullet revolver. The crossbow is pretty awesome, and when you shoot an enemy with it they'll run around frantically before they explode.

So I get to this dark tree, and I get a message that "I sense innocent blood." So I approach it and there's a cutscene where it says this bitch is dying of some infection. The interesting thing about it is you can decide to save this girl for the GREAT GOOD or to suck this bitches blood for the DARK EVIL. I know Crandle would bitch about not having some extra "morally grey" option, but this actually has a gameplay affect. Depending on which option you choose, you get a different "blood move". Think Jedi Knight II:Jedi Outcast, but you're a fucking vampire cowboy. I chose good, so I got a super revolver attack where I totally killed everything with one hit for a set amount of time. The way I understand it these moral decisions will actually have an affect on the story as well, but obviously I couldn't establish that from the short playtime.

One other gameplay detail was the "blood vision", which you can use by pressing R3. This makes a sort of cool "heat vision" effect almost, where all your enemies (and innocents as well, actually) are glowing.

ANYWAY, the demo ended by fighting this pretty cool fatass boss who had sucked way too much blood because he kept spitting at me. That shit ass took away my life like a bitch, so I used my special move and disposed of it quickly.

IN CONCLUSION, this seems like a game with some rock solid gameplay that obviously learned a thing or two from Halo among other FPS. It's fast, sort of has a... Serious Sam 2 vibe in terms of the flow, which is to be expected. Some might call the artistic direction "angsty" or whatever, but I fucking love the world that I've seen so far. The flash of scenes we saw on the video aspect of the demo show some awesome levels, one of which has you riding a undead horse chasing after a fucking haunted train. I love how the skeletons are jumping all around at you, giving you that sense of fear where you gotta pull the trigger before they reach you with their flailing weapons.

I thought it was yet another generic FPS. Horrid weapons - no imagination in their use, or design. Definetly old skool when it comes to enemy AI (Doom was over 10 years ago, yo) - and the stuff on horseback was ripped straight from Red Dead Revolver.

The demo didn't have the horse thing, but I couldn't tell how good the weapons were since there were only TWO in the demo. I like the silver revolver and the crossbow, although they're not exactly spectacularly original.

As to the AI, the enemies ran pretty much straight at you most of the time (except for those Banshee things), but again I only fought two types of skeleton enemies in the demo so it just seemed like they did their job (i.e., the AI wasn't standoutish, like hunks of meatless things charging at you waiting to be killed - like Serious Sam)

Yes it does, press right on the dpad in the level select screen

NOOB

The horse/train level has a sniper rifle and shotgun, which are... even less creative

Holy fuck, you're right. Hahaha. Well, I'll play that later today.

But I think the game is less about being super creative and more about getting the mechanics really tight, which I thought it did.

Aside from the vampire stuff (the screen turns red or blue-yay) I thought this too. I would have loved to see more innovation displayed in the demo

yeah - stolen from the anime movie "vampire hunter d: bloodlust"

I'm sorry I hate most anime, but yes you're right - now that I think about it, he DOES look like the dude from Vampire Hunter D. Yoshitaka Amano art, right? Yoshitaka Amano owns.

yeah but the vampire hunter D guy aint a cowboy, and the Darkwatch guy doesn't have the typical anime face. So I wouldn't think the Darkwatch character is a copy job at all. It's more like turning Clint Eastwood into a vampire and sticking him in fancy black cowboy clothes.

I thought it sucked and hard. It had some cool visuals in certain places like when you first seen the moon, but the gameplay is so bad. Enemies don't react to your shots. They just die after a certain number of them. That and the only AI in place is the "FOLLOW AI" where the enemies, once they appear, do nothing but follow you.

"Swarm" AI, yes they come at you. But they DO react to some of your shots. The crossbow, for instance, if you hit them with it they start flailing around.

What the hell are you talking about? Location specific damage is one of the game's biggest features. You can blow arms and heads off, and when you hit a leg they.. I forgot what they do, BUT THEY DO SOMETHING!

I thought the demo was pretty fun, nothing I'd buy though

This is exactly the point. I mean, opinions on how "generic" or "artistically inspired" it is, I thought it had its gameplay mechanics down pretty well and was actually pretty enjoyable all things considered (that it copies things from such a superior title, like Halo 2).

Like a Serious Sam with a gothic vampire skin. Serious Sam was always a love/hate thing too, and I submit this will be a lot like that in terms of love/hate.

But from the way I see it, it'll definitely be worth a 20 dollar buy if the rest of the game has decent level designs and ramps up difficulty appropriately and has suitably awesome "blood moves."

Those skeletons didn't seem to do anything when I shot them. Neither did the fat dudes.

That's because you suck. Unless you're talking about the train level.. The shotgun and sniper rifle are pretty much one shot kills, so I think they just fall down when you use those.

I started in the graveyard. Skeletons took a few shots to kill and they did nothing but run at me. I'm pretty good at first person shooters so I don't think it was me sucking.

Did anyone really expect Sammy to make a good FPS?

Wow!

A friend's wife brought over her OPM demo disk and I got the chance to play this at Sea Manky's last night.

I'm fairly impressed. The frame rate was pretty smooth and everything looked pretty nice in the game.

Location specific damage was a lot of fun. I was taking my time lining up shots to shoot off heads and arms, but it doesn't seem to be too involved. I recall shooting the zombies in the legs and they just fell down IIRC. Granted I was aiming with an analogue stick, so that shit can't be trusted.

The blood vision thing stunk as did melee mode. I wish you could disable the melee or rage, or whatever the hell mode it was. It's where you see red and everything sucks.

The crossbow also sucked ass.

This will go on the Clearance purchase list. :P

I received the following in an email from the folks over at OXBM

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

To users of the Official Xbox Magazine May issue disc regarding the Darkwatch demo:

If you’re having trouble playing the demo for Darkwatch, we’ve got a quick solution.

• If you’re an Xbox Live subscriber, make sure the network cable is disconnected from the back of your Xbox.
• Go to the main dashboard (without any disc in the tray).
• Change the clock on your Xbox’s Settings screen to show March 1, 2005.
• Load up the Official Xbox Magazine May disc, and the demo will now work perfectly.

This problem is caused by a line of code in RenderWare, the engine powering the Darkwatch demo supplied to us by Sammy Studios. The demo worked perfectly in our testing, but due to an oversight at the developer, the demo has an expiration date that causes it not to work, so changing your system clock fixes the problem.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and can assure you that Sammy Studios is now working on a brand-new, fully functional demo of Darkwatch.

The demo was alright. It was interesting for about 15 minutes, especially the melee and "fan" animations, but other than that, it's your standard fare. The attempt at a "good side, bad side" story at the end of the first level was rather pathetic IMO. There is just a dialogue box that comes up and asks you if you want to be good, or if you want to be bad. Seems like somebody got a bit lazy there, but oh well.

Although the art direction and style look pretty damn good, the graveyard portion of the demo sucked ass. I mean really. I've seen much better Darkwatch levels but to throw some lame ass (short)canyon/graveyard level as your "highlight" for the game to get people interested is just plain silly. A much more aesthetically pleasing level should've been chosen. The train level was okay though.
