David Jaffe / God of War new thoughts

Musashi Wins!

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
He just updated his blog. Some interesting takes. I really go back and forth on this guy. Sometimes his "goddamn it I want blood and screwing" seemed a bit fake to me, other times I think he's just a genuine non-prententious guy who got the chance to make a great game.

http://davidjaffe.modblog.com/?show=blogview&blog_id=638410

My first task is to work with Incognito Studios to come up with a game design for a new PSP game. Incognito are the guys/gals who make the Twisted Metal/War of the Monsters/WarHawk games. I've worked with them on 3-4 games and I've always had a blast. They are quite an amazing group and I'm eager to jump back into the 'bluesky' phase with them.

-PSP:I am in love with the PSP like Tom is in love with Katie. No, wait, that's not true...that would mean I'm just FAKING my love for the PSP. I'm in love with the PSP like Jack loved Rose in Titanic...there ya go! Been playing this ALL break long....BROTHERHOOD OF THE BLADE and MVP taking up most of my time....God this machine is amazing...I hope Sony does drop the price (as rumored on the net) cause more people need to get into PSP gaming....that said, what the fuck was up with the lack of games for PSP at E3??!?! When I get back I gotta chase down some answers....There's gotta be a shitload of stuff being made...why was it not being shown? -DS: I am playing ZELDA:MINISH cap and I like that alot. Plus my two fave E3 games were for DS (the lawyer game from Capcom and the doctor game called UNDER THE KNIFE)...still, why the fuck is this doing so well in Japan? I just don't understand it. It's not like it's a crap system but compared to the PSP it is just lame....someone help me understand! Nintendogs? Yeah, that was a blast when it was called DOGZ and I played it on my PC

- G4TV: When the fuck are these guys gonna do a DINNER FOR FIVE style show with game industry folks. Maybe it's just me, but I'd watch it.

-E3:It was a good show. Not the best, but not as lame as most were saying. I was pissed- as I already touched upon- about the lack of PSP software. Dug the new PS2 Castlevania, but can't tell if it will be a great game or just a good demo. Onmimusa 4 with the controllable camera seemed kinda lame...does not play as well when you control the camera, in my opinion. But I love the world so I will still play it. Mario Baseball seemed really unfun for such a fun looking title and such a fun concept...it just did not play that great (shocking for a Nintendo first party game) and it was too hard to hit the ball! The new Zelda game plays alot like Wind Waker...which is fine but I didn't get what the big deal was...I know it will be a great game, but it does have a very 'been there/done that' feel to it. The Gamecube pinball game from that Yoot guy (forget his name and the game name) is really fun! Call of Duty 2 on XBOX360 is a system seller for me. I was not blown away by the other 360 titles (but I DID NOT get a chance to see GEARS OF WAR), but COD2 really shines! The EA games were kinda underwhelming. The Bond game looks really great....but the rest of the non-sports games left me a little cold.

-GOD OF WAR SALES: Can't give out official numbers but the NPD (which gets posted on the net so it's not official Sony numbers) is putting us close to half a million sold at full price. We'll do better than that before we go to Greatest Hits. Not the amazing powerhouse I wanted it to be (I was hoping for a million before a price drop) BUT still really damn good. 500,000+ people playing a game I worked on...Man, that's a good, good feeling....especiall y given how most games struggle to sell 200k these days.

-TOM CRUISE: Dude...you are so faking it. It's really gross. I don't care if you are gay or straight, don't care if you are asexual....I love lots of your movies, you do good work. Stop trying so hard, man. It's really sad.

10 days till god of war hits europe. i hope it performs well. i have it pre-ordered :)

and he was expecting 1 million before drop?? that's just... no.

1) God of War deserves all the love it gets. Can't wait for the sequel. Hopefully it will be pushed to PS3, but any GoW is fine with me.

2) Glad he's excited to develop for PSP. I'd buy a God of War PSP title with simplified controls in a heartbeat. Maybe it could flesh out the backstory when he was killin fools as the leader of the Spartan Army, but an original IP would probably be a better fit. (Warhawk PSP with some crossover with the PS3 title? Please?)

His two favorite games at E3 were for the DS and he thinks the system's lame by comparison to PSP?

... I'm as shocked as anyone that the DS is doing so well in Japan, but if you think that the best software is on that system--the system will sell in spite of its shortcomings. Simple business, right?

Good thing he's tied to Sony and can't pick which system to develop on. Fuzzy business logic.

Wow it sounds like this guy should just open the memory card slot on his PSP and hit it. I never heard anyone spooog over this system like this guy did.

Now someone tell me when I can see a God of War sequel.

:)

Worse games have achieved better sales, so why to hell not. I hope it gets 1M worldwide sales (mostly US+EU, obviously)

It's not that odd. It was developed on the system whose fanbase is the most resistant to new franchises and IP. SCEE keeps pushing Jak, Ratchet, etc. but they keep failing to sell very impressively because PS2 owners seem to know which four franchises they want to keep buying and aren't very willing to branch out unless a media frenzy is stirred up over a game.

He can go join the vic irleand "stillborn" club

Do you honestly believe this?

Probably shouldn't be asking Jaffe for it. He's already said in a 1up interview that he's not going to do a sequel for it if one is made.

I think he's talking about hardware, and perhaps the software currently available.

I don't think that's any different with other consoles, really, and it is kinda sad... Jak and Ratchet franchizes are not very good examples, as they have both sold several million copies each, though.

So then what are the only 4 series that PS owners buy?

NA exclusive:
Madden.
GTA

Japan exclusive:
Winning Eleven
Dragon Quest

Common:
Final Fantasy
Gran Turismo

Almost worth mentioning:
MGS

To be honest, I just pulled the number out of my ass because I needed a small number to help convey the point.

If you're so sure that the statement that the PS2 fanbase is the least open to new franchises is false, then can you list off a bunch of successful new IP that has done well not only in volume sales but also as a percentage of total userbase? Explaining things like how VJ/2 would sell better on Cube in spite of its abysmal sales?

Yeah, and all it took for Katamari to sell a whopping 200k copies was a budget price and possibly the most significant push ever by the gaming media. Seriously, even Time Magazine was pimping this game and yet it still struggled to break 200k on the NPD charts.

Uhh... MGS?
Gran Turismo, Jak, Ratchet, Socom, ATV Offroad (yes, f'n ATV offroad) NFSU, and many others, have sold over one million copies just in NA. There's probably craploads more, actually.

It was a low budget game with no TV advertising, though.

If it helps you make up your mind, he quoted your post calling him "an arrogant tool" for his GOW demo commentary in an Edge interview and agreed with you.

I really like Jaffe. He's like if Will Wright used his powers for evil.

:lol Well at least we read each other. I've come around to the liking side.

I wonder if/how it will do in japan

He's also called me a great writer who didn't have a clue what I was talking about.

Something about Jaffe just incites love/hateness in me.

However, after I got a chance to really play and beat God of War, more power to this guy developing games. That shit was good.

For making the
boss fight with the 100 Kratoses
nigh on impossible on God Mode AND leaving a crash bug in there on that very fight, he can fuck himself in the ass.

I like Jaffe but his DS hate (along with Vics) is so fake and forced it's not even funny.

"I HATE DS IT SUCKS! NINTENDOGS CAN POOP ON MY LAWN AND EAT IT HAHA!"

"My favorite games at E3: DS games." :lol

Shouldn't devs of all people know its about the games and not the systems?

That was my recipe for games biz success!

Well, apart from being a great writer.

I like this one. He's young. Has spunk.

He isn't tainted by the influence of gigantic money hats yet.

I wonder if he's also confused about PS2's success. I mean, it has great games, but wtf? Compared to xbox, the hardware is just lame!

People are seriously shocked that a guy employed by another company isn't completely positive about a competitors system? Come on now.

It isn't, though. As we have seen countless times, the PS2 can more than holds it own. PS2 and XBOX are clearly of the same console generation. It's kinda like the old Genesis VS SNES wars...

DS and PSP, however, are clearly not of the same gen. The gap between their capabilities is quite vast.

PSP's power isn't necessarily a good thing in all situations, unfortunately. The costs required to create a good PSP game are likely quite a bit higher than DS, which makes DS more appealing for publishers and the like. Handhelds rarely receive the same kind of budgets observed on the console side...but PSP games seem to demand budgets of console size.

So the gap between DS and PSP is in the same ballpark as the PS2 and xbox? :lol

God of War proves to me that the PS2 can hang just fine with the xbox in terms of on screen visuals with the right Dev.

oh yeah "I love you, Dave Jaffe!!!"

He technically answered his own question--where are the games for the PSP? That's what really seperating the DS and the PSP right now. NCL has their act together in Japan right now. They got a while to go in NA right now, but things are looking up.

Wow, maybe I just suck at writing....I grew up with the NES and SNES...I am a fan of the company...I waited in that hellish line like everyone else at E3 to play Zelda....but I'm not allowed to think the PSP is leaps and bounds ahead of the DS without me being some Sony stooge?

From the moment I picked up the DS it just felt clunky and the graphics are pretty lame- IN MY OPINION- compared to the very sleek, very impressive - IN MY OPINION- PSP. And I think Nintendogs is lame....I love Minish cap, my two fave games at E3 were for the DS, and I loved the pinball game for the Cube....so I am no Nintendo hater....I just don't get the big deal about the DS....I can buy that that may be a weakness on my part, a lack of ability to understand the market, but that doesn't change the fact that I don't understand the big deal...

Sorry if this offends...

David

ps. hey, who did I say was a great writer who didn't know what they were talking about? I am not denying it but I don't recall who I was refering to....please fill in the blanks! Thanks!

You need to spend less time worrying about what some idiots here post and more time making GoW2 for PS3.

Cmon, please?

David,

Excellent that you answer for yourself in person! Beware the console polarity of GAF, you would never be able to defend yourself enough here. Don't bother.

Also....and you may have mentioned this somewhere else...did you ever look into the licensing for Conan when you were making GoW? Your game had some elements that really reminded of that character in a great way and I notice from your blog that you've read some of the stories.

Pro Tip: Give Kratos oversized pixel-shaded boobies in God of War 2 and you've got yourself teh system seller! Contraversial and sexy!

Seriously, ignore the people who bash your opinion. There will *always* be people who don't agree with your opinion and wasting time on them leaves less time for you to formulate more opinions on things and, more importantly, continue making quality games :D

Ha ha, this is the GAF. There is no gray area around here.

Oh, and, eh-hem, that God of War 2 for PS3 comment above mine? Yeah, that would be a good idea. :P

Thus exhibiting the balls of steel that make him dave jaffe.

Dave! What did you think of the Conan MMO?

david,

any hint you can give on which way you and incog are leaning for their next PSP project? i.e. what type of game. It was nice that each of Incog's projects on the PS2 was based on a different IP, and they managed to come up with a couple of original ones that were well worth the effort.

*Raises hand shyly*

I was the douche who kept arguing that GoW could have been argued as not technically a Sony-originated brand, which I based upon posts that turned out to be incorrect (namely, that you were at Incog when you first had the idea, which I had assumed--wrongly?--wasn't owned by Sony).

It was a retarded argument that was primarily just spurred on by the fact that Manabyte couldn't put together a sentence that directly answered what I was asking.

Anyway, sorry about that. It became pretty fucking small potatoes once I played the game and had a really great time with it.
