HA! I completely forgot this was due out today! There goes my attempt to finish off Kingdom Hearts tonight.. That is unless Steam is still being a punk by the time I get home.
 
Ahhh, cool, I had totally forgotten about this, hell after finishing HL2 on my last PC I hadn't even installed Steam on this one yet.

Day Of Defeat is kind of boring actually the game consists of watching a yellow bar slowly move across the screen. decrypting
 
Actually I think I just made it to level two, now there is a yellow bar moving across the screen saying updating. I can't wait to see level three. ( i hope there is a nother yellow bar!!)
 
OMG, just had my first game... it kicked ASS!! Graphics are insanely good, those iron sights are better than in any other game (the perspective actually shifts, pretty impressive with the recoil) and it's just fun to play. the new map is really handy and the sound is amazing. Haven't tried the HDR yet, don't think my videocard can handle it. (already running 1600*1200 with everything on the highest, except for AA which is off and AF which is at trilinear. HDR is at bloom though) Runs pretty smoothly.


Actually topped the score liist with 7 kills and 3 captures ensuring our teams win, probably first win on a public server :)
 
Once I finally got into a server, the lag was unbearable. Well not really, I wanted to play that bad. Even on lowest settings, it still looks good.

I thought AA + HDR wasn’t possible? But I had both HDR and AA (2x) activated when I played. How is that possible? I didn’t think current graphics cards could do that? O_o

I have a (Magical? :D ) 6800 btw.

It seems like that was an engine specific thing... like I think Far Cry's HDR doesn't work with AA... I seem to remember them using a different method to achieve HDR...

Of course, I could be completely off...

So if it can't be done in existing hardware, why not create a new hardware feature of the graphics card that will do both?

Just played for almost 4 hours straight, man what a rush. Oh and for the record, HDR is bloody stupid. Oh look, constantly changing bloom lighting, the joy is too much.

Far Cry is doing a more complex HDR lighting model. It's MUCH more demanding on the hardware and only runs with SM30.

Valve was kinda siding with ATI, but ATI's PC cards didn't support those same features. I'd assume that the Source version of HDR lighting isn't quite the same thing, but achieves a similar effect.

Examples I took (downsized)...

Notice how the light works against the objects? It's as if the light is spilling out. Looks very nice in motion. When you are walking through dark jungle, looking out between the trees shows off really intense light such as that and it filters through everything. The intensity varies depending on the surroundings. It's pretty convincing.

As a serious dod player I can't get over some of the changes they made. The rifleman class is just garbage now, no pistol, the kar doesnt kill in 1 shot every time now, what the fuck am I supposed to do when I hit someone with the kar, they dont die, I have no pistol and it takes a few seconds to reload the next round...everyone just runs around with tommys now :/

Kar dmg seems the same to me. Center mass or headshots are fatal, anything else isn't. The lack of a pistol is a bit annoying though.
 
I used to play dod all the time... havent for about a year.

I played dod:source for about 20 minutes. I only played the class on the far left. (rifleman? i forget)


Why does ducking take so long?? Feels floaty.
Why does the right click AIM view take long to bring up? And why does it take up like half the screen? Its completely useless. The animation is unneeded.
 
Kar should kill to any part of the body, as far as I can tell it does 82 damage to arms/legs, without a pistol its really hard to finish off the person, especially if they have some sort of auto. Its really a balance issue, I have no problem with the fact the garand doesnt kill in 1 shot, but its rate of fire is much quicker. I was just playing and I looked, there was 10 tommys, 1 sniper and 1 rifleman on my team (I was the rifleman) that doesn't seem very balanced to me :( No one even uses the BAR anymore either...wtf!

Blame the devs, not the technology. It makes for some pretty amazing subtleties when used right.
 
If you got the silver package, then yeah, if you got HL2 you get this free.

Being a huge fan of DoD throughout it's many updates/changes, this one...eeeeh. Hitboxes are borked, for one. The weapon selection for the classes is messed up. Give every class a pistol, because if I'm a German Rifleman and miss my shot, I have nothing to back me up for that 2 seconds or whatever.

They just need to tweak some things, remake Caen, and I'd be a happy camper.
 
Intially I was excited about Day of Defeat Source when I first played it, but the more I play the game, the more I realise how much VAVLe has dumbed Day of Defeat down.

The most glaring oversight anyone who played the original might notice is how fucked up the balance is between the classes and the various weapons. Hop into any game, and I bet the majority of people will be using the recoiless wonder (MP40/Thompson) class more than anything else.

The lack of a pistol for every class (but Assault), for heavies and especially rifles is blatantly retarded. There's been so many times I've been caught reloading and didn't have a pistol to fall back upon to save my ass, sure I can go for the knife if they're close enough, but more often than not I'm dead.

As a rifleman it's even worse because now you not only don't have a pistol for finishing off people up close if you miss with your main weapon or it doesn't do the job, but you lack a secondary melee attack which saved my ass so many times in 1.3 and all the earlier builds. Iron sights are completely useless, you get all the penalties of scope walking with half the bonus, at the loss of an attack that could save your ass from a smg popping round a corner right in front of you. No more gutting with a bayonet or cracking their skull with the butt of your M1 Garand. They crippled the rifleman class.

The BAR and STG44 are now equals in terms of stopping power, recoil, and even alternate firing modes in Source. That's fucking retarded. Half the fun of using guns like the BAR, Bren and Fg42 Zweinbein in 1.3 was that they weren't guns just everyone could use. Use well that is. It took a little time and skill to master them because of their extreme recoil, but their stopping power was worth it. I would run through crossfire to get my hands on one of those guns, now...not really. The BAR almost isn't worth it anymore, especially not when I have an STG44 in my hands.

Source is much more video game-y, more arcade-y in terms of how it's blanced compared to 1.3. Before the guns were slightly altered for the sake of balance, but now it's at an extreme. It's like all of the guns have been made exactly equal to their counter parts in their performance and abilities, with an emphasis being placed on what VALVe dubs the Assault class.

Don't get me wrong, Source is a good start, fun to play, but a lot needs to be changed or tweaked.
 
The BAR is terrible now, like you said everyone just picks the assult class, there is no point going rifleman when 5 tommy are running around, there is nothing you can do. I really hope they get a patch out pretty soon to fix some of these issues.

Oh god I just played a few hours. They really fucked up my rifleman class. The game just seems weird too, like its sorta choppy or something sometimes although my ping is <20 and my fps 50-100. Bazooka owns now though, BOOM. Sigh, I miss my 1 hit kills with the rifleman, its too slow for two shots..
 
It's like they made Day of Defeat Source not for the existing community of players, but for those who haven't played 1.3 and will be plunking down the cash to buy the Source make over. VALVe ditched that 'pesky' learning curve DoD had in favor of an easier pick up and play style of gameplay.

Frustration free DoD, just pick the Assault class, if you can't shoot them with your recoil-less spam cannon, you can shoot him with your pistol, if that fails toss a grenade, if that doesn't work try your smoke grenade or if you're feeling ballsy try to punch your enemy to death. I'm pretty sure he'll be trying to reload his gun at some point wishing he had a pistol or trying a suicide melee attack.

Even tho the BAR, M1 Garand, and K98 are nerfed I still use them, if only out of habit, and still do well enough. I'd be doing better if I had a pistol, and in the case of rifles a secondary melee attack. There's so many times I've died because I lacked those. Still, can't wait until the 1.3 weapon balance returns cos it's better than what Source has now, and I'm fairly certain the regs of the dod.net forums have been incessantly bitching about Source and all of its issues ever since the game was released. Hopefully the dev team pays attention and brings back the balance that made DoD what it was. Great.

I agree with every word jaundicejuice has typed. They've totally fucked my favorite classes. But I gotta stick with 'em, I just have to, for old time's sake :(

It is so frustrating to nail somebody with the k98, only to have them wheel around with the Thompson and nail me. GIVE ME A FUCKING PISTOL, PLEASE!
 
I love the rifleman class, probably due to my infatuation with the M1 Garand. And I kick ass with it so no reason for me to change :)


Although I can imagine people being pissed about the changes, but I reckon that with all the negative feedback going around they'll throw some changes/updates on Steam pretty soon
 
I agree with everything said here. I've been playing since beta 1.3, and I actually have liked the game less and less at time goes on. Actually betas 2 and 3 were amazing. But I stopped playing when the retail version came out because I still had 56k and the netcode turned to shit when the retail version came out. So this is really my first time playing for about two years or so. That said, the rifleman class is so fucked up, I want to cry. Fix the iron sights, they are worthless. Give the rifleman pistols. And keep working on optimizing the engine. My computer may suck, but CS:S runs a whole shitload better.
