Daylight Savings Two More Months

TORONTO (CP) - Adopting two more months of daylight savings time would save energy and ensure Canadian business remains in step with the Unites States as that country considers springing its clocks forward earlier and falling back later, experts said Wednesday.

Canadian politicians are also closely watching events that unfolded in the U.S. capital and vowed to assess the pros and cons of following America's lead. "As important as it is to be synchronized with our American partners, it is just as important to be synchronized within Canada," said Internal Trade Minister Mauril Belanger.

"We'll monitor it, we'll follow it, but it is provincial jurisdiction," he added.

"We have every confidence that the provinces, when they meet at the Council of the Federation (in August), will be able to deal with that."

If Canada doesn't follow the U.S. lead on daylight savings time it won't be the first time the countries were out of sync.

The energy crisis of the 1970s saw the United States adopt 10 continuous months of daylight savings time, from January to October, 1974.

Canada did not follow suit, and news reports from the time detail TV schedules out of whack with U.S. programming, airlines changing flight plans and Canadian businesses modifying work hours to remain in step with their counterparts south of the border.

Maybe I'm missing something. Perhaps there's a piece of the puzzle I'm not seeing, but HOW is this going to save energy? I mean if someone can explain this to me, i'd be really greatful because, as it stands, it's really pissing me off that the U.S. is doing this and Canada will have to deal with it, or be out of sync.

How 'bout this-- daylight savings ALL YEAR ROUND? Watching the sun set at 4:30 is so incredibly fucking depressing. I don't give a shit when it rises....I can deal with a little darkness in the morning.

Lick my wang! I'd rather have dark nights than dark mornings.

That would actually be interesting. I honestly didn't consider the light thing as far as energy goes. Though the number estimated to be saved seems a bit low. Of course, admittedly my real beef was that there's going to be some major changes if this indeed goes through. Also find it a bit annoying that it feels like a decision is being made for Canada by the U.S. ... but that aside, if that 2.2 is really worth it (and I'm no energy expert), I guess it's a good thing.

Who the fuck said anything about dark nights? I'm talking about dark afternoons. Who the hell wants the only sunlight they can enjoy to be that 20 minutes before arrive at work early in the morning?

This is a toughie. I'm inclined to say we should follow Saskatchewan's example and just forget Daylight Saving Time, or just deal with being out of synch for 2 months of the year. Extending DST really sucks for us methinks. Not that my opinion will change anything though :/. Guess we'll be "falling back" in November then. Right-o.

You have my vote, sir.

Saving. No s.

And damnit. I'm still in denial about Indiana goin on daylight saving time next year. I don't care when the sun rises or goes down, but I want measurements to be constant. 7 PM should always be a multiple of 24 hour units away from other times which claim to be 7 PM.

I'd like to recommend "vanity increasing space", by which we ignore the inches from 36" to 38". Almost all of us would get 2" taller!

huh?

The expression daylight savings time (with the extra "s") is a common alternate form but is not considered to be proper English because "saving" is used here as a verbal adjective describing a single type of activity.

I guess you're right. hm.

Wow, didn't know that. *edits post* I guess it makes sense though considering the explanation in Desperado's post.

I don't care about the energy saving aspect of following the US' lead, I care about my TV shows. I don't want to start watching shows at 7:00pm in November and having shows end at 12:00am in February.

Can we not just push the clock ahead or back half an hour and just not touch it ever again?

Amen...the whole concept is so outdated it's ridiculous.

That aside, I'm with demon...the more light there is in the afternoon/early afternoon, the better. Couldn't give a fuck how dark the mornings are...the sun could rise at 9am for all I care.
