The Switch version of free-to-play massively multiplayer online action game DC Universe Online will launch via the Nintendo eShop on August 6, developer Daybreak Game Company announced.

The DC Universe-themed, free-to-play massively multiplayer online game first launched for PlayStation 3 and PC in January 2011, followed by PlayStation 4 in November 2013 and Xbox One in April 2016.

Accounts or characters from other platforms cannot be transferred to the Switch version of DC Universe Online, as it connects using Nintendo Accounts and does not link to existing accounts. The Switch version will run on its own server separate from other platforms, but Daybreak Game Company said it “looks forward to exploring cross-play options in the future.”

Here is a brief overview of the game, via its PlayStation Store page:
DC Universe Online is free-to-play! Join thousands of other players in a massive online action game set in the popular DC Comics universe. Create and customize your own powerful Hero or Villain and experience true action combat as you fight alongside and against legendary characters such as Batman, Superman, The Joker and Lex Luthor. Become a part of our thriving community at DCUniverseOnline.com! Please note the download could take several hours, but it’s worth the wait!

DC Universe really became it's own game since that 2011 PS3 release, very passionate fanbase, it's pretty remarkable it's still going

It's so cool to play a full console mmo on a portable device.

Also this game should not be overlooked because it is so much fun and simple to pick up and play. The pace is fast and the atmosphere quite unic compared to any other mmo. Some of the best action combat for this genre. Framerate is good too, that's a nice surprise!

Edit: my only complain is the monthly subscription fee. 18.99$CAN/month is quite crazy for such an old game, 9.99$ would have been more realistic.

Content doesn't come cheap especially since Daybreak is mostly a skeleton crew at this point. I think they've suffered 2 or 3 lay offs in the last 5 years? I just looked it up and it says two lays off with the most recent being last year and they lost about 70 people.

What has Daybreak done before? I simply never heard of them :/

Edit: nevermind , they are behind Ultima and old mmo stuff. If I understand correctly, they are not releasing content but simply running servers and getting mtx money right?

Never really spent any time with this game, aside from installing just to take advantage of that "free level 60 boost for new players" campaign.

Daybreak was formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment who are known for EverQuest, PlanetSide, and to some extent Vanguard Saga of Heroes. They also made H1Z1 and a few other games.

Ah ok! Wow that's neat.

Max level is 30 though.

So it's free to download with a monthly subscription?

It's free to play, but you get bonuses for having a sub.
Also, not sure about other versions, but the PSN version won't grant you trophies unless you have a sub.

If DCUO was more dynamic and had more depth, this might be a bit more exciting for me.

As is, every couple years I tend to have superhero game nostalgia, reinstall DCUO, and regardless of whether I play hero or villian, it only takes about 15-20 minutes, if that, before I recall every mission, and know the exact sequence of events I'm about to partake upon -- which is a bit depressing for an MMO.

Don't get me wrong -- really love superhero games and all that, but anymore when I play DCUO, it really makes new long for older titles like City of Heroes, maybe even Champions Online. :messenger_dizzy:

EDIT: Also, with max level being 30, followed by overly monotonous grind -- wait a minute.... was DCUO actually meant to be the prequel to The Division?? xD

That game has some legs. It feels like forever ago when it came out.

I enjoyed it for about a year, playing a few times a week. It was nice having a fully functional MMO on a console. I hear Final Fantasy 14 is really good on console as well so long as you have a bluetooth keyboard.

Was never a huge comic fan. I had some favorites but haven't ready any in years. But I liked what they were doing in DCUO with the different perspective and heroes and villains, and the boss fights were super fun. Some of the best in the genre.

Shocked this game is still running. Never really tried other than one time for like an hour. It was ok. I don't remember it running very well though. Does it run ok on a PS4 pro?

Well, considering I just watched a DCUO video ("worth playing in 2019") from 10 months ago where they pointed out DCUO tried going up in price to $20/month and $10/month for a 1 year sub -- to now see, on the DCUO website, it listed as $6/month or $5/month for a 1 year sub, combined with reports that the game is a ghost town, not certain just how much life-span this game has left.

Great pricing now, but at this point in time, would it even be worth it for a sub, considering this game has some of the more brutal f2p limitations. :messenger_dizzy:
