Yep, random leak was right.
Alex Garland
A24 has now confirmed what's been rumored for weeks — that Alex Garland will write and direct a live-action Elden Ring film for A24 and video game company Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc.
This comes following the release of Warfare, his A24 Iraq war pic directed with Ray Mendoza, which has grossed over $32 million since opening last month. Peter Rice is set to produce alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich from DNA, as well as George R. R. Martin and Vince Gerardis.
Released to critical acclaim in February 2022, Elden Ring is an action RPG set in an authentic dark fantasy world, which allows players to head off on adventures within vast environments and dungeons. Created under the guidance of FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game is based on a story written by Martin, author of the fantasy novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire, which served as the basis for HBO's Game of Thrones.
Over 30 million units have shipped worldwide over the last few years. An Elden Ring spin-off, Elden Ring Nightreign, is slated for release worldwide on Friday, May 30.

Awesome. They could've done much worse than Garland.

Denis Villenevue would've been my ideal pick, but Garland knows what he's doing. The only movie of his I haven't liked (or seen) is Men. All the others have been worth watching.

Good luck to try to extract a history with beginning > middle > ending... Elden Ring's narrative is so scattered that you cannot even pinpoint a somewhat exact timeline of events.

I know some people swear by it but Men was an insufferably pretentious load of shit after an interesting setup. Typical A24 ailment. Interesting buildup, total weird-for-weird-sake third act that "you just didn't get bro" if you criticize it. Still think he's a good and interesting director. Even my favorites have made some truly awful shit.

There should only be 4 lines of dialog in the whole movie leaving it up to the viewer to figure it out purely through examining each scene.

A24 are the best in the business and its not even close (okay, Tarantino is better, but he ain't making shit anymore). Garland is awesome. This has extreme potential daaaaamn.

I like A24s output, I like Alex Garland and of course I love Elden Ring but I just feel these games won't translate well into film. Will probably be a visual feast though.

Excellent studio and director combo, however the thrill of Elden Ring are the boss fights, which are mostly thrilling only to the one doing the playing.

Not sure how boss fights would translate into interesting movie content, or how they would be produced even.

The Green Knight's visual style and direction should be the easiest template to follow for a Souls movie:

Also, like The Green Knight, the movie needs to be bold/unsafe enough to rely on a sole protagonist. No friends, no quirky crew. Just one tarnished on a harrowing adventure. The movie should be a visual spectacle and not need much dialogue to carry it.

Yeah this will be awesome, I wonder where they will draw inspiration from for the movies main plot.
There are so many sub plots and stories in ER that each one could be its own movie/series.

I imagine they will stick with the main line of a tarnished or group of tarnished attempting to destroy the elden ring/beast.
They could easily set each boss up or at least a couple as the main villians.

Imagine something like Melenia which is a side story could be its own movie.

Hopefully cos its A24 it will at least be artistic, It would be terrible if it was like monster hunter or resident evil and they just go down the LOL MONSTERS route.

I wonder if he is a fan of the game.
100% is a gamer

At a minimum, this movie will be visually awesome. I am very curious on Miyazaki's input, because Fromsoft obviously needed to sign off on this going forward. If this film ends up doing well, I could see Sony itching to make a Bloodborne film. Which would be far more interesting imo than Elden Ring

Minecraft what have you done.

Elden Ring would work as an anime movie, sure. A24 don't have the budget to make this work as live action, no way. Everything is CGI these days, fantasy epics are the most expensive things in the world to produce. You need props, sets, real stuff made.

I have not seen The Green Knight but you made a compelling argument. I have to see that movie.

Fantasy version of Edge of Tomorrow, maybe?

Garland will probably be given a 100+mil budget. He directed Civil War for A24 on a 50mil budget. I'm assuming the Elden Ring IP is easily big enough to justify it. All of Garland's films are visually striking

The Creator, which isn't a great film, but looks like a 300mil Hollywood blockbuster, has a budget of only 80mil. It can be done

Gonna be interesting to see a 2hr film where 60 mins is just the main character dying over and over again in lots of varied ways.

Hollywood has absolutely zero creativity anymore.

These hacks should be making your own fucking stories with their own, new IP. But they're too afraid to even try. Dollars to donuts they cast a kid in a supporting role here.

This era of sucking the blood from videogame IP will end just like the last one, with a bunch of shitty movies that have zero significance.

the blame lies with the video game publishers as well , they launch a successfull IP , they start milking it to death

I hope they just take a small portion of the lore, the most important part, the story that led to the event of the Night of the Black Knives, when Godwyn the Golden was murdered

loved the game but it basically made no sense and the majority of people who played it can barely tell you exactly what the game was about.

There was a tree and it got burned and two people were at war and like they die but don't die but become corrupt and some guy eats poo.

I just don't see how this gets adapted well into movie, even with Alex Garland who i generally enjoy.

But i guess we'll see, ill wait till we see something then critique. Just of all games to make a movie from Elden ring, or any from software game would be at the bottom of the list for adaptability.

This would have to have a fairly big budget to be pulled off decently no? I believe A24's biggest budget movie so far was Civil War at $50M...

All I think about when I am reminded of that movie is a damp sperm soaked cloth

Sounds exactly like Souls storytelling.

I think Tom Cruise did that already.
I've put hundreds of hours into each Souls game, and related, and I couldn't tell you the "story" of any. I love the lore very much so I'm cool with that because imo, it doesn't matter much inna videogame of this nature, but how they'd work that in a film? Let's see!

Much like Zelda, the flimsy excuse of go save xyz is porn-level writing to facilitate orgasmic immersion.

I didn't care for the movie ultimately but this was absolutely Souls: The Movie through and through to me as well.

I have a strong feeling the backstory developed by GRRM is well-defined and it took a good amount of effort from FromSoft to make it convoluted yet simultaneously vague.

I unfortunately will disagree, that fat old codger is a way worse writer than he thinks - he only knows how to add cheap porn and other shock value scenes into what he tries (and fails) to finish :-D

like i like to joke: JK Rowling is 1000% better writer than GMMB... because she started and FINISHED her story! :-D

Yeah, you're probably right. What if FromSoft actually only got half of the backstory and the end product is what we're seeing in game. :messenger_dizzy:

As far as Im aware, GMMB was responsible for the base story until the 'It's Marika time' against ring itself. - minus DLC, which messed even more the timeline.

Awesome, I hope they have Rykard's daughter in this.

To me, Elden Ring has the best story in games. Super, super deep lore and I can't get enough of it.

I hope dungeater is in this. I hope they do the seedbed curse, bwhahahaha.
