It's the only way they could not answer by today.

Serious question, how do these people live with themselves? And the republican party is surprised that Trump is the candidate?

How much of this mess is gerrymandering? Or do people really feel that the GOPs have their best interest in mind?

Patiently awaiting for the day when every NC GOP politician is caught in an airport men's washroom playing footsie...I mean, they all have to be self-hating closet cases right?

The GOP does* have their best interest in mind.

It sucks so much for those that will be affected by this but hopefully if the defunding happens a riot starts and they throw this guy out of office.

This seems like a bad strategy from the Obama Administration since McCrory and the state GOP hate the UNC system anyway. Now UNC gets gutted *and* trans-people stay out of the "wrong" bathrooms.

Sounds like a win/win for the GOP

The governor said there was no comparison between civil rights laws that forbid racial discrimination and the Justice Department's claim that the federal law also protects transgender people.

"We can definitely define the race of people. It's very hard to define transgender or gender identity," McCrory said, adding his request for more time to respond to the Justice Department was denied.

What a terrible person.

I just don't understand why they support this bill so strongly. I have not seen them give ONE strong argument to make me see their point of view.

They really really reallllllllllllllllllly don't like any of us in the LGBT+ community. They already lost to us on gay marriage and they fear they're going to lose more in our quest for equality, so they're acting while they can, unknowingly speeding up their future losses in the process

It's sad that there are still people in power in 2016 that use laws to force their outdated prejudice down people's throats.

Sadly people love to believe in imaginary things to make them sleep better at night. The lawsuit is to drag things out as much as possible. The GOP keep demonstrating that they are a bunch of human scum. I really hope that trump succeed to dismantling them slowly in the next few months.

Let's just hope there isn't any stay and this governor is brought to task for his prejudice and stupidity.

It's an easy issue to pander to and it distracts from other issues the state could be having.

Ultimately we are talking about a minority of people that all of this shit is bring talked about. I bet you that the average person who has insipid imagination on what a Transgender person is would probably never meet one throughout their day.

Plus its not like this law is enforceable in anyway unless you want cops iding people before they enter a bathroom which doesn't exactly speak for smaller government.

Let's just hope there isn't any stay and this governor is brought to task for his prejudice and stupidity.

McCrory was underwater on his approval ratings before this. Now he's heading into Donald Trump territory without the charisma.

The only reason McCrory won the governorship was because he was seen as a moderate and successful mayor of Charlotte when they got some big federal grants that really helped out the city. Most of those were actually the work of Anthony Foxx, a city councilman who succeeded McCrory as mayor before Obama scooped him up to be the Sec. of Transportation.

After McCrory won the governorship his true colors emerged and his approval rating started heading steadily down. He made comments before about how he didn't think the state should fund things like "gender studies" as curriculum within the university system as it "wasn't helping anyone get a job". So his LGBT phobia peeked out from his "moderate" cover well before this. This was all a play to consolidate his conservative base as he was even losing ground with them up to this point.

He's running against Roy Cooper, the person Dems wanted to run when Bev Cooper retired but he declined, leaving them with a weak field that McCrory capitalized on. When Cooper ran for AG in 2012 literally no one even wasted their time opposing him. Not just in the primary but also in the general, the GOP just surrendered the AG's office of North Carolina instead of wasting a penny against Cooper.

He is going to destroy McCrory. Hell, I'm betting that he and Hillary Clinton are effectively going to have a synergistic bump resulting in Clinton winning NC in the electoral college while Cooper beats the polling targets and runs McCrory's ass out of office decisively. He has said the first thing he's going to do is get rid of HB2.

That is how this will be settled. The state's lawsuit will stall until November, Cooper will win, and the state legislature will cave in an attempt to save face knowing that with both the federal government and their governor directly opposed they have no hope of keeping the bill. As of last summer polling indicated that 15% of the people in NC approved of the legislature's job to date while 60% disapproved.

Also, while NC is a trifecta state currently the legislatures are less partisan than many other states. They have some of the most impressive gerrymandering in the country in play as the only thing enabling them to hold on at present, and that gets harder and harder every cycle. North Carolina is turning blue, fast, and the actions of the governor and state legislatures of late are the death rattles of social conservatism like we saw a few years ago in Colorado.

Full disclosure - I know all this because I've been reading up on NC politics for a while now since I just got a promotion that requires relocating from St. Louis, MO to Asheville, NC.

Moral issues aside, and the fact that I've never been in a Republican Restroom where apparently genitalia are proudly waved around (Bathrooms I go into have these things called stalls), my one question to Republicans pushing this would be simply, "how would you enforce this?"

Do they expect people to be carded to use the restroom? I know there was that story about the gay woman being harassed by cops a few weeks ago, but is that seriously what they want to see happen? Any woman who looks or dresses in a masculine way should be carded? Feminine looking men should be carded?

If I was the University of North Carolina I would take like 1% of that money (or even less) and sit with the trans students/workers and say "So ... do you people acept that money to have your surgeries/medicines instead of using the bathroom at the university? Will even pay for urinary problems of not pissing for long time ..."

What does this mean?

NC has unfortunately been on quite the downward trajectory lately.

As a North Carolina noob this is a fantastic post. One question: What exactly can Roy Cooper do to HB2? Remove it via executive order? Does the NC Governor have that kind of power?

HB2 only applies to public institutions iirc, private companies are allowed to set their own bathroom policies. As Governor he could issue an executive order barring discrimination based on gender identity (like the new LA governor recently did) in public institutions which would pretty much dispel that provision HB2.

I'm not sure if he would have the authority to reverse the "Cities cannot set their own anti-discrimination laws" provision which is honestly the far more offensive and damaging aspect of the bill.

These assholes don't even have a plausible pretense for their bigotry. Like, are there any instances of trans people causing issues in bathrooms? Any at all, much less a pattern so troubling that it calls for immediate action?

Pathetic hateful cowardly morons. The least they could do is own up to their baseless discrimination.

Pattern? No. But I'm sure they've dug up one or two random, isolated incidents to rally Round.

Didn't the governor of South Carolina say they'd never pass a law like this there though?

The governor of South Carolina actually has political aspirations outside of being the governor of South Carolina (she's been talked about as one of the "rising stars" of the Republican party before).

Say goodbye to whatever respect you had from the rest of the planet, North Carolina.

I know how bullshit NC's been lately, and I know how transphobic and ignorant they've been, but even so, you have to admit this country as a whole, even with its least progressive state, is still miles better than some other nations of the world where there mere fact of being queer can get you killed.

Thankfully, some of the people of NC also don't necessarily subscribe to the bullshit notions of the state, they are fighting for what's right, fighting for equality and against this; they should not stop fighting, and I stand with them.

Even at its least accepting and least progressive points when it comes to queers, as a queer American, I can never forget that we are still leagues ahead of other nations, and many steps behind some as well.

This is coming from a queer person who is only protected, recognized and considered a protected class in a SINGLE state by the way.

What does this mean?

I was thinking how they will loose TOO MANY money.
Take 1% of that money (which is 14 millions) and divide equally to every trans people who would use the university's bathrooms ... trans people are by definition a very small minority so it would be like what ? 50 people MAXIMUM ? That would be like 280 thousand dollars to everyone so they don't pee at university =P

I would have accepted a lot of money so the education of everyone does not get fucked up by the goverment .... and this way trans people are happy because they received lots of money and the university is happy that they got their billions
