You don't seem like you actually want to have a conversation, but I will reply. I wasn't mentioning a specific post of yours or a specific point about the dialogue/ a line in the movie. I am just pointing out that you were being overly critical, somewhat insulting in the tone of your posts throughout the thread and if you have a rebuttal or point to some of the criticisms, it's hard to take seriously because do sound so angry and insulted.

From my last post on the prior page:
edit: I haven't had any issue with dozens of posts in this thread that articulated why they don't like the trailer. You're reaching simply because I'm vocal over a few thread shitters (note: I don't think terrene is such a person).

Thank you for your useless observation. How does that invalidate anything regarding the possibility that a team of professionals in the movie industry deliberately inserted that line into the film as a piece of ironic wit?

Really?

You know we can go back and read your past posts right?

How so? It sounds exactly like poorly delivered hashtag activism. As I said earlier, perhaps it's just a case of a bad trailer. I remember thinking Inglorious Bastards looked horrible due to the trailer, and the dialogue sounded forced...but the actual film was great. Maybe that's the case here.

Has this film screened at festivals yet? I feel like we should be getting reviews already, Atleast if only from the hipster elitist award crowd.

I like that last jab at Mexicans. It's still OK to be racist against Latinos and under-represent them in main stream media, yay!

Yes, and unfortunately we can read yours too.

I've directed my ire at literally a handful of people, including you. I've had no issues with many more posting here saying they dislike the trailer. Keep grasping tho.

It's very early, but it's currently sitting at 100% with 9 positive reviews.

What exactly does that mean? Who's the special jury? Who's the breakthrough talent?

Dammit, I hate obscure awards.

It's the same jury that chooses the dramatic awards for Sundance, it basically means they wanted to give special recognition to the film, and it was awarded to the director.

Sorry, we will have to agree to disagree.

Trying too hard, LOL Tumblr, the black people in it are unrealistic, every line uttered seems like the gospel truth but it bothers me cuz I don't think it's true... anything else I miss to dismiss the movie?

What part of any of my posts said that Dear White People is specifically a movie about a black girl chasing a white guy? Someone said "I bet she's chasing white dude" and I said "I hope not because TIRED trope."

You guys aren't even trying to read what I said and just getting offended that someone is shitting on white men always being the center of attention on popular media.

No one has given compelling reasons as to why this is terrible, other than not agreeing or being bothered with the message, or bogus sentiments that the actors in the movie aren't real life-like based on personal perceptions.

In minority-related topics, a group will always predictably flood in to declare that they have a problem with an article's tone or the OP's tone, and that they refuse to listen until the tone changes to suit their nebulous personal tastes. These are concern trolls and it's a derailing tactic, and it comes up in practically every one of these threads. It's bullshit.

Thank you for your useless observation.

I was actually unaware of the whole Tumblr thing. This is the first I've heard about it, but I guess it's something that's been going around. I guess I am confused at the goals of the movie, possibly because of the speculation by posts on here about its importance.

Since much has happened in the thread since then. The rest are about the annoying, dismissive tumblr stuff. Why did you quote only my posts? Am I the only one in the thread complaining about this stuff?

Ah ok, I checked out the Sundance site and read what the award was about. Thanks

Further more, just what is a Winner and what is a 2014?

YEAH! WHAT ARE QUESTIONS?

For those who're saying "lol,Tumblr" that exactly what the directior I believe is going for. Peep the synopsis on the Sundance page:

Sundance said:
At prestigious Winchester University, biracial student Samantha White begins her radio show, “Dear White People, the amount of black friends required not to seem racist has just been raised to two. Sorry, your weed man, Tyrone, doesn't count."

Sam becomes president of the all-black residential hall Parker/Armstrong, whose existence is facing extinction in the name of diversification. TV reality show Black Face/White Place smells gold in Sam’s story and decides to follow it, rejecting the proposal of fellow black student Coco Conners, who pitched her show Doing Time at an Ivy League. The clamor over Sam's rise also becomes a career-defining opportunity for black misfit Lionel Higgins when he is asked to join the school’s lily-white newspaper staff to cover the controversy, even though he secretly knows little about black culture.

With tongue planted firmly in cheek, writer/director Justin Simien makes an auspicious debut with Dear White People, a witty and whip-smart satire about black militancy, postracial fantasies, and the commodification of blackness. Nothing is black and white in this playful portrait of race in contemporary America.

The whole idea of the film is supposed to whack you across the face with racism.

100% fresh

Though I'm sure you'll fall back to your lame "elitist hipster" criticism

oh thanks. See we can all be friends here.

100% wow. a rental at bare minimum

No one has called the film terrible, despite the boogeymen in your mind

I cringed when I saw the film's title but after watching the trailer I want to see it.

same, I was expecting some controversial and cringy shit, but this doesn't look too bad. I haven't read any of the discussion here so I don't know. might watch.

Although your language for the movie amounts to just as much. You have to be pretty bitter and upset by this subject matter to use language like "I feel like we should be getting reviews already, Atleast if only from the hipster elitist award crowd." Or even worse completely false assessments of the movie: "meh..I don't need a movie about militant blacks despising white people. I live with that everyday."

I assume all the tumblr mentions in the thread, come from the dialogue of the protagonist (at least in the trailer) being very literal, but personally i just interpreted that as a character trait, as she seems to be very passionated and active about the subject, so it make sense to have lines like that one about what racism is and so on.
Plus it's a satirical comedy, so of course it's going to be more on the nose and overt.

I think it's cool that they didn't seem to shy away too much from what they wanted to say, and it seems like it could be fun.
Also the trailer doesn't show a clear story arc, so i guess it makes it seem more of a bullet point list than it probably is.

oh please, Sundance is the definition of the hipster elite movie-going crowd.

I ask if reviews have came out from the screening, and I get a link showing reviews from critics, 5 out of the 9 websites I know cover sundance and Canne's. Accurate

Or even worse completely false assessments of the movie: meh..I don't need a movie about militant blacks despising white people. I live with that everyday.
False? The director plainly stated she is modeled after the black militant stereotypes and she clearly doesn't like white people. Accurate to a tee.

Seems like I was only wrong using the plural.

You are altogether wrong. This is not a movie about a militant black person who dislikes white people just because that one character has traits of a militant person. You seem crazy/unstable.

Your hipster elite comment is trash and doesn't deserve any more of a response than that.

right, the director just says that she, one of the MC is modeled after that specific stereotype and she is a big part of the movie, thus why she is all over the trailer and in much of the promotional material.

but no, her relationship with other others is not a part of the film at all

You're painfully oversimplifying things and saying this is a movie about a white-hating, black militant and that the film revolves around her hatred for white people, right? Let's just be clear so we can be done with your lunacy and go on our separate ways.

That's the impression the trailer gave me, and I don't find that interesting or appealing to me. Back to square one now, where you are angry that I don't love a trailer?

I'm not sure what I expected when I went into this thread but the film looks hilarious
I see it's already at an amazing 4 stars over on IMDB
Fucking wow at the only review so far:

What? 1/10 stars
23 June 2014 | by Terrance Earle – See all my reviews

Intended as a comedy that ploys on the idea that the minority, there really isn't one, isn't displayed theatrically as major roles. I'm a huge international movie fan and this offends me. THOUSANDS and HUNDREDS of smart films out not type-casted by race including American/Hollywood. I would rather talk about the unpractical romance standards films try to depict than watch a movie about a dead subject. I'm sure there are still racists out there but this is America, Land of the Free and the Brave. If you settle to represent yourself as demographic minority than you only you racially isolate yourself. You have the right to choose how to have the public perceive you. My girl friend, future wife, is from the other side of the world we're two complete different people and we love each other. Perhaps this couldn't be done 45 years ago, but I still would've done it. She's amazing! People who believe in race are stupid, just as stupid as ghetto gang bangers of decent/lineage.

maybe tomorrow it rains
Giving this thread a bump because it's the best one I can find.

This is up on Netflix now, if anyone was unable to catch it in a theater near them. I'll hopefully be able to ditch MGS long enough to watch it this weekend.

Its a shame that people perceived the movie as militant or insulting towards white people bases on the title alone. It really plays with those expectations.

I think it's because of the title that could be perceived as accusatory and people are so sensitive this day ... They also might have felt like it was trying to teach them a lesson about how to behave around black people.
I'm white but not american so I'm probably wrong and I for one really liked the trailer and will be watching this on Netflix.

Thank you for the bump.

Yeah, the marketing kinda put people on the defensive, but its better to be vilified than forgotten. The movie pretty much subverts the tráiler.
