Your city is nice. Cold, but nice.

I like the MTS Center.

Why do you have to be a freezing witches tit though?

What's the cost of living like out that way and are there any areas to avoid living in?

The reason I ask is that I had a job interview out that way and may be making a move right away.

Stay out of the North End. I grew up in Kenora, ON (bout 2.5 hours east of the peg) and even I loathe the city.

I've lived in Winnipeg for most of my life and I don't think it's too bad. Yeah, it's really, really cold in the winter, but the summers are pretty good (when the mosquitoes aren't out of control). It's not really expensive to live out here, as opposed to say, living in Toronto. Overall it's a pretty good city and you don't really have to worry about crime if you remember to stay out of the North End when you can help it. :)

It's been quite a few years since I lived there, but is the downtown still dead? That was the saddest part of the city, the fact that no one went downtown.

My significant other lives there, so I go there every two weekend or so. I'll be going up for a week during spring break. The North End is a goddamn nightmare, but yeah, it's not SO bad outside of there. As far as crime. As far as other stuff... I don't know, we haven't found a whole lot to really enjoy about the city (she moved there at the end of August). The roads are bullshit in the winter, they need to keep to their budget better and keep that shit clean. So I'm definitely looking forward to the melt.

There's a pretty awesome Chinese restaurant called Peace Garden on Pembina Highway, way south by the Cork & Dock. If you go in there at like 11pm (as we always do), the whole place is filled up with people singing Chinese karaoke. We're always seated in the lounge-- the resaurant is reserved for karaoke singers. The food is fantastic, and seriously filling, though. I give that the thumbs up.

Does the Winnipeg police department still take natives in rides and drop them off in the middle of nowhere without their winter coats?

It's not as dead as it used to be, but it certainly isn't as vibrant as the downtown of other capital cities. However, I think that the current situation downtown will gradually change with the addition of the MTS Center and the fact that it will be where the Juno Awards are held this spring.

However, parking downtown still sucks.

Why do you love Winnipeg?

Because it's a great city, good people. I don't really care if people here badmouth it, it's too bad for them. I also love spending the summers up at my cottage which is about an hours drive away, not a lot of major citys have the luxury of being an hour away from great, lake-front property. Also about the cheap shot about us being connected to the internet, we've had cable highspeed since early 1998, dsl right after that, we were way ahead of most American citys, highspeed dsl is available in most larger citys in the province now, I can even get dsl at my cottage.

If you love Winnipeg then it's safe to say you think it's a great city. :p Why is it great? I don't doubt that the people are good (nice, good-humoured).

A low cost of living, great parks, the community I live in is great, very very clean. I am aware that the north end of the city isn't the greatest, but we've been steadily improving the core and expanding out. The new arena is fantastic and it sounds like we may be getting a new stadium in the near future as well. Plus like I said the close proximity to great cottage country is nice. I don't really have to come up with reasons why I love living in Winnipeg, I just do, having visited most of the major citys in Canada just makes me appreciate it even more, it's the perfect mix of big city ammenities and smaller town community.

Yeah guys, it's One Great City ...

late afternoon another day is nearly done
a darker grey is breaking through a lighter one
a thousand sharpened elbows in the underground
that hollow hurried sound of feet on polished floor
and in the dollar store the clerk is closing up
and counting loonies trying not to say
i hate winnipeg

the driver checks the mirror seven minutes late
crowded riders' restlessness enunciates
the guess who suck, the jets were lousy anyway
the same mood every day
and in the turning lane
someone's stalled again
he's talking to himself
and hears the price of gas repeat his phrase
i hate winnipeg

up above us all,
leaning into sky
our golden business boy
will watch the north end die
and sing 'i love this town'
then let his arching wrecking ball proclaim:
"i...hate...winnipeg"

I'm too good for this thread, but I have to say.... motherfuckers from KENORA cracking on Winnipeg? Come on, next we'll have Surrey dissing Vancouver. :lol

Kenora cracks me up every time I accidentally stop there for gas. Everyone has a chip on their shoulder about Winnipeg (wah wah people can't drive there wah wah it's not as pretty as Kenora look at our awesome rocks and trees sob sob) but they generally shut up when you ask when their EI is going to run out and they'll have to move to the big bad city too.

I'll give a shoutout to Winnipeg as it's the Slurpee capital of the world. I recall with fond memories the runs to 7-11 when I went to school there. The place was packed, and they had every flavor you could imagine. In Toronto we have maybe 4-6 machines max at a location, while in Winnipeg I wouldn't be shocked to see 12 or so. Winnipegers go crazy for slurpees, it's like their catnip.

Heh, I don't hate Winnipeg because it's a city ... I hate Winnipeg because it's fucking Winnipeg. I'm not a big fan of Kenora either. There are things that I miss, but for the most part, I'm really enjoying living in TO. Yeah, I've got my complaints, but they're all things that don't have much to do with the benefits of an urban setting.

The anti-tourist Kenora thing ... meh, it's a tourist town, they need people to come in and buy shit when summer hits. I worked in a kitchen for 4 years (Hap's, if you've ever been) and the place is absolutely boring in the winter time. When summer rolls around though, it's a mad house. Tips were great and so was working 60 hours a week (seriously). As for the lack of driving skills ... Winnipeg has the only U-Turn light that I'm aware of in Canada, that should say something.

And yeah, don't ever accidently stop in Kenora for gas, it's always ridicuously expensive. Prawda probably has the cheapest gas or Falcon Lake if it's open.
