I've been on a DCfC kick lately and grabbed all their albums.

Ben Gibbard sure likes his complete sentences
that go on like this
in a song.

Death Cab is good. I was into them a few years back, but now I can't really bring myself to bother to listen to their material lately. I don't really know why. I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just not in the mood, I guess.

The Postal Service is something I just do not like at all. There's so many other groups that do that style far better.

You DO have to be in 'the mood' for DCfC or Postal Service. Either reflective or depressed. The Shins are for every mood! yay shins!

I only have Transatlanticism. It's a bit uneven, but still good. The title track gets me every time. "I need you so much closer"...so pretty.

You need to pick up Something About Airplanes. I hadn't really sat down and listened to it for years, but while driving up the Oregon coast last month, I rediscovered it's beauty and intensity.

Photo Album is good, but a few of the songs are too hard to listen to, literally. His voice gets drowned out. Maybe its my factory car speakers.

Army Corps of Architects is my favorite DCFC song.
I'm not really into Postal Service though.

Army Corps of Architects is killer, I'm so glad they put it on the reissue of You Can Play These Songs With Chords, as I was afraid it scratching my Underwater! 7".

As for me, Photobooth rules all.

Something about Airplanes and We Have the Facts are pretty decent. . .The Photo Album marks the start of some bad habits. The Postal Service are simple sounding and embarassing. Transatlanticism has a rather interesting and off-kilter sense of melody, but Gibbards lyrics are as awful as any thesaur-o-rama outing by The Mars Volta. Chris Walla knows good music when he hears it, which makes things all the more infuriatin'.

In short, MAF, I am ashamed of you!

'I am thinking it's a sign that the freckles
In our eyes are mirror images and when
We kiss they're perfectly aligned
And I have to speculate that God himself
Did make us into corresponding shapes like
Puzzle pieces from the clay'

<shiver>

EDIT: Two words describe The Postal Service - utterly pedestrian. Aside from (This is the Dream of) Evan and Chan, the teaming up of Dntel and Ben Gibbard has brought nothing but boring music and overwrought lyrical castration to music lovers of the world!

Have you ever been happy once in your life? It's cheesy, yes, but I love it.

(This is) the dream of Evan and Chan is the worst postal service song in my mind. There isn't anything about the song that I like, and I love the album.

Is not being happy a requirement for hating DCFC? <looks at MAF> That lad's playing for the wrong team.

This is all in good fun, mind you. Ben Gibbard is just my mortal enemy. You see, one time I was told this prophecy about Gibbard and myself: ' AND EITHER MUST DIE AT THE HAND OF THE OTHER FOR NEITHER CAN LIVE WHILE THE OTHER SURVIVES.'

It's been killing me for years.

And I more like my overwrought vocals in the style of Xiu Xiu, thank you very much.

The Dream of Evan and Chan is highly overrated in my opinion. The live version is killer, but the studio version is extremely grating, with a minute or so of listenable material surrounded by static beats and fuzz.

Oh, don't worry, I wasn't offended, your critique just sounded like a Pitchfork copy and paste job.

Xiu Xiu is good, I'll give you that, but DCFC is band numero uno for me, even if it was foretold that Gibbard will die by your hands.

Or will I die by Gibbard's hands? Or will we kill each other? Or are my powers weaker while he is alive, or vice versa. It is truly a curse to be fated to live in interesting times.

I now find myself trying to defend whether I am a happy person or not. Of course I am, I have happy music right, uh, here. . .or, maybe over here. . .uhhhhhhh, AH, The Soft Bulle. . .er, not really happy. . .Ah, The New Pornographers. They are happy -- I am happy.

Not happy, you lose!

Have you heard Figurine?

It's one of Postal Service producer Jimmy Tamborello's solo projects.

It's all micro-style 8-bit influenced music like "Brand New Colony"

Also check out Dntel.

Jimmy is rad.

EDIT: I find it sad that most people feel repulsed by earnest lyrics. They're all, "not detached and ironic enough! It sucks."

And it's the damned happiest song about alcoholism you'll ever hear! If I was going to argue about which NP song is the saddest, I'd either go for The Fake Headlines or. . .um, there's this one b-side with Neko doing lead vocals that basically sounds like a Neko Case and Her Boyfriends song.

See above-stated love for Xiu Xiu. I don't have anything against earnest lyrics (see also: Bright Eyes/Saddle Creek love, folk music love, hardcore love, emo love), I just have something against painfully embarassing lyrics. That snippet from 'Such Great Heights' sounds like it was written by a junior raver on too much ecstacy of marginal quality.

Well, if I were going for an actual depressing New Pornographers song I'd have to give it some thought and then everybody here would have to know it to understand the reference. I think "The Slow Decent into Alcoholism" has fairly universal sad appeal.

I think the telling point is that any thought would have to be given to the topic at all. The New Pornographers make joyous music even when their chosen subject doesn't dictate that they do so.

You shut up, you! It was a joke and it wasn't a good one to begin with and you've gone and ruined it! Jerkface!

I don't want to talk to you anymore. Lalalalalalalala, I can't hear you!

What are some good and catchy indie pop bands?

I don't mean stuff like Unicorns or Wrens. I mean straightahead stuff ... like... verse verse chorus bridge chorus.

It just seems like some of you hardcore music dudes always tend to dislike traditional pop. Maybe it's some sort of musical history context funk you guys have fallen into?

this isn't a loaded question either, i'm really curious.

Good and catchy does not equal happy.

You want the New Pornographers, though. And the Dismemberment Plan.

I like traditional pop and power pop, btw.

ill second the new pornographers pick

see edit.

i like the New Pornographers. Mass Romantic rox, Electric Version sorta overrated.
they're not happy, more like.... fun and bright?

but that has louder guitars and vocals than stuff like DCfC. So is there no good "mid-volume" pop?

again, not a loaded question. but i dont understand the hate for bands like Fountains of Wayne, Metric, Eels...

I like all 3 of those bands.

Also, Beach Boys. Pet Sounds and one of the better greatest hits albums will serve you well. Also, Matthew Sweet. Don't be shocked if he has a critical comeback relatively soon.

Any Teenage Fanclub love in here? I definitely recommend them if you like most of the bands mentioned in here. Their greatest hits album, Four Thousand Seven Hundred & Sixty Six Seconds, is awesome.

If you haven't heard them, you should check out Rilo Kiley. The lyrics are sometimes cheesy but it's catchy and fun..:)
