Which one should I choose? NOTE: CRT is not an option due to the small apartment that I live in. I need something small and compact to replace my 20'' 4:3 Toshiba CRT.

So.... which one? If you stick a CRT in this thread, you won't get noticed, it's too fucking big for my setup. Can anyone vouch for any of these?

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
I can't vouch for any of these - sorry - but I'm very interested in the thread and these TVs since I'm also in the market.

Have you seen the sub-$1000 HD's from Target/Walmart? The 32inch Hyandai and the Oliviea one especially I heard was pretty nice.

(oh, and feel free to post crt ones - Bild may not be interested, but I am :) In the $900-$1100 range, larger than 40 inch)

I would go for Samsung.

You can actually set the sound fine on the dell with external speakers.

I'd go with the Dell because I'm pretty sure it offers the best in terms of image quality. As for the speaker problem, just get a 5.1 system that has digital inputs so that you can make the best use of the 360's sound quality. A cheap solution would be the 5.1 logitech speaker system.

i recently bought that viewsonic. can't compare it directly to the other two monitors you're considering, but i'm quite happy with it. it actually has two component inputs, though one of them only accepts 480i signals (annoyingly)...you'll probably need a switcher.

I don't know how small you're willing to go, but you can get some great deals for this Dell 20 incher:

if you are looking for a TV, I'd go with the samsung.

if you are looking for a monitor that can play TV, I'd go with the Dell.

The Dell was the only option for me. I wanted a nice PC monitor and nothing under 1600x1200 cuts it anymore. Haven't played the 360 on it yet unfortunately but World of Warcraft at 1920x1200 is pretty damn awesome.

edit:

1280x720 is exactly 2/3 of 1920x1080 which is the monitor's 16:9 native resolution.

The Dell will do 1080p, so it will also be awesome for the PS3. Get it. OH, and use VGA, it gives you more resolution options to suit a moniter like that. Just ask stinkles.

The Samsung is great but if you buy it turn off the DNIE. It will burn your retinas.

The viewsonic is a piece of shit.

The Dell is an amazing monitor EXCEPT in one important area: lack of proper HD input for Blu-Ray and other HDCP encoded content. Saying that, it's the monitor I'm thinking of getting myself.

The chipset in the Dell supports HDCP through the DVI port but it is not enabled.

Not enabled? Can a user turn it on or off? or does it require a firmware change or something? If the monitor does have HDCP through the DVI then I would snatch it up real quick

I have the Samsung and really like it. Note the HDMI input which is going to come in handy when PS3 hits. Also the contrast ratio of 3000:1 makes the picture noticeably prettier. Two component inputs for extra convenience.

But where did you find it for $999? The best price I found was about $1080 after a coupon at Amazon...

I don't know if anyone has enabled it but I haven't really looked into it. It was mentioned on a site I came across while looking for reviews.

3000:1.. that's gotta be some kind of different measurement than most manufacutrers use. I ahve a samsung monitor and it's only listed as 800:1. And most don't go above 1000:1. Otherwise I have to question that ratio.

We've started using that Dell at work... and DAMN is it awesome
It has no speakers, but it's 'bout time I got a 5.1 set (is the Logitech any good?)

I gotta get one for my home, or steal it and get fired.

anything with the option of hooking a console up with RGB is great.

how is the quality upclose?
since 1920x1200 is the native resolution .. what resolution do you set your xbox360 then?

That Dell really is amazing. I'm going to be in the market for an HDTV for my 360 myself soon, but I'm a size whore. Im not sure if 24" would be enough =|

One question though. With that Dell, could you hook your computer up to the DVI port and switch between the component and DVI views easily? If so, we may have a winner.

While I don't have that monitor, the older Dell LCD's have input switch buttons on the front (Digital/Analog), so my best guess would be yes.

I use the dell as my main tv through an hdtv box. HDTV channels are amazing and vivid, and regular content isnt bad either when I let the cable box do the upscaling. It DID have a red push to it through component, but after a little fidling, it was pretty nice. I'm waiting to find an xbox 360 , but sadly havent found one. Gprime, are you stretching the image on some of those pictures? to fit the 16:10 format? I notice that its correct on one of your images with the slight horizontal black bars, but others are full screen.

Also of note, a 4:3 image doesnt feel that small on this monitor either with the black bars on the side, since its not as wide as 16:9.

Im surprised to see the chip does support hdcp, im hoping someone unlocks it with firmware. It was one of the only negatives with this screen I had.

edit: it is pretty easy to switch inputs. There is one button dedicated to switching inputs. And the inputs have led lights next to numbers on the front panel. IT takes three presses to get from dvi-digital to component, and takes less than a couple seconds.

the usb hub/memory card reader on it is really handy too

Go with Samsung
It's 899.99 at circuitcity

And if you get those circuitcity mailings, then there's a 15% discount coupons on it too.
Use that and you can get a quality HD LCD TV for 800 bucks!

You can find the 26'' for $999 at www.electronics-expo.com. Must be reputable, it's on Samsung's website. Thanks everyone for replies so far.

Idiotic question, say I were to get the Dell, how would I get sound output if the monitor doesnt have any audio out. Forgive my stupidity.

Ya. I use the DVI out on my digitial box to watch tv on my 2005. I am confident the 2405 can do that as well.

Hook up the sound cables to your stereo amplifier. Or do like me and hook them up to your PC's sound card input. Or hook them up to any old pair of powered speakers (usually computer speakers).

I'm an hdtv noob, what resolution will the monitor have to be at to be considered "720p"? I just picked up the dell 2005fpw by the way.

1280x720 = 720p
1920x1080 = 1080p

Do you, and others, notice any ghosting when playing games with fast graphics? Just wondering if the 12ms response time is sufficent for the 360, but it sounds like it is....

Nate

GeoNeo

I disagree.

One frame at 50 frames per second takes 20 milliseconds. 12MS response time is more then sufficent.
