I haven't seen it since it came out 4 years ago, but it's on FX so I had to watch it again. I thought the film did an amazing job of trying to take a very fantastical concept and make it somewhat realistic seeming. Plus it has Denzel!

Come on GAF, I know someone out there agrees with me!

I enjoyed it, it was probably my favorite "Action"-based time travel movie.

Favorite comedy-based time travel movie right now is "Hot Tub Time Machine". (Looking forward to seeing the extras on video tomorrow!) Followed by "Idiocracy", but I really enjoyed and highly recommend HTTM.

Favorite not-actually traveling but time-based is "Frequency", followed by "Butterfly Effect".

Still need to see Primer (it's on my DVR).

EDIT: Here's a handy guide from XKCD to explain the narrative charts for movies. I like the Primer one.

Haven't seen too many time travel movies this past decade.
The Butterfly Effect probably ranks at the top of my list.

I also really like The Jacket, though I might be the only one. :lol

Saw Deja Vu in the theater actually. Okay but pretty run of the mill thriller, no real want to watch it ever again.

Primer was too much for me. I ended up understanding the timeline after reading about it on the internet, disappointed.

Me neither. Suffered from LOST syndrome: throw a bunch of weird stuff on the screen and let the audience connect the dots.
actually throw a bunch of advanced physics at the audience and laugh as they pathetically scramble to figure out what the fuck

i still have no idea what happened in that movie, and thats after like a zillion flowcharts explaining the thing

still the best time travel movie tho

there aren't enough movies to say it isn't in the top 5

but it aint exactly an awesome film....unless you're like a middle aged black woman or somethin'.

My aunt gets off every time you even mention danzel.

i also want to add that i too like the butterfly effect. alot of people shit on it and i guess i can see why but i like it.

I'm a sucker for Rachel McAdams.

I've actually thought about watching this one. I'm also a sucker for McAdams, plus Eric Bana is a pretty cool actor.

I hate Donnie Darko. I don't like anything about that movie. And The Butterfly Effect hasn't aged well, at least with me. I thought it was decent when I saw it in theaters, but I hated it last time I saw it.

And I had mixed feelings about the time travel stuff in Star Trek 2009. I understand why they did it (to bridge the old with the new, create a new timeline) but I think I would have liked it more if Nero was the only one that traveled back in time. I don't know, all the Old Spock stuff just felt so shoehorned in for me. Still liked the movie though...

Yep

Timecrimes is just too good to not be named number one in my book. It was just so gripping and it had a sense of humor without being overt about it.

Whoa... I mean it was good, but I wouldn't go out of my way to call it the best of the decade. I mean Timecrimes is some stiff competition, and here I thought I was the only person who saw it :lol

Still have to see Primer though.

The difference between Lost and Primer is that with primer it is possible to connect the dots. Lost just leaves a load of things unexplained but Primer gives you just enough clues to connect everything up.

No, Primer is pretty much the exact opposite of Lost. Carruth provided a meticulously crafted narrative that you have to watch at least twice to understand.

I watched Timecrimes like five months ago and thought it was pretty run-of-the-mill and very predictable. I'm not sure why it gets so much praise.

I always thought it was a cop out that they could just zoom to any angle in their past-viewing machine. It gets one into all these weird time loops that would go unanswered.

Primer was fantastic. If you don't understand more about a time-travel movie when you watch it the second, third, fourth time, then it isn't really a time-travel movie.

Timecrimes, Primer, ect...
Those are the two worthy ones.

Deja Vu was okay. It had a more interesting premise than execution. The upcoming movie Source Code might be similar in concept based on its logline, although it might actually be quite different.

At least in Primer's case it seems like a solution exists. If nothing else, it's a good illusion.

I think all these were much better time travel movies from the 'aughts:
1. Primer. Nothing else even comes close.
2. Timecrimes. Okay maybe this comes close.
3. The Girl Who Lept Through Time
4. Butterfly Effect
5. Idiocracy
(if it even counts as a time travel movie)

Agreed that Deja Vu had a much better premise than execution. I couldn't stomach the Time Traveler's Wife.

I'd say primer for a hard sci-fi look at it, butterfly effect for actually making a decent watchable film with the idea, and donnie darko because I just really like it
