I was a fan of Kyle until he commented about Brad going to LSM. He basically said congrats to Brad but he'll never go on his show bcuz he doesn't want to support anything Colin Moriarty is involved with. I don't generally completely block out a personality I don't agree with. But he's taking that stance on Colin who hasn't done anything to deserve that, so I think it's fair.

Metaphor is much worse in this regard though. It's the most formulaic, repetitive, dull and uninteresting game that I played this year.

Exactly. And the above titles all have chances to pick up sales later on in their lifetime. Concord was removed from stores. That is a monumental difference.

Not so much.

Concord is a MP only online hero shooter. It has an inherent cost to the publisher to run servers for the game. If the player population can't support it, they cannot afford to run the servers at at a loss. So the servers need to go offline and they can't thusly sell a game that doesn't work.

So the store removal was for technical reasons, not strictly commercial.

It makes a difference in my point on my very first post that you quoted:

Not a big one to matter. All those games were big failures and I don't think the publisher cares as much the degree to which a game bombs; whether like Outlaws or Concord. A bomb is a bomb and it's an outcome they aggressively need to avoid.

This website's community has it's own small bubble whether people decide to acknowledge it or not, that's why it's important to see where conversations are moving elsewhere.

But again, what's that got to do with the discussion on why these big AAA games are failing? The reasons for failure are objective quantities independent of any discussion on the subject.

The Concord bit is unique and far more interesting than the game itself. For us the enthusiast as well as business leads and management(of which many armchair scholars act like they are) there is quite a bit to glean and consider the ramifications of. For the average person it is forgettable and has no importance in their lives. Like hearing a bad song or movie trailer its simply a matter of moving on or ignoring it. Only stockholders, board members or fanboys with emotional stock would care that much about any companies portfolio that much.

Xbox has always been on the decline sadly. Not just the brand but MS leadership in general is just sad. While there is some merit to chance, timing and other market forces the fact remains that they did this to themselves.

Nintendo's Holiday lineup is standard and expected fare which is more geared towards casuals and seemingly meant to eek out some time until their next system is announced and launches. If anything I've been impressed with the support because I've owned systems that got next to nothing from their parent company in their final years.

His opinions on FFVII Rebirth vs Metaphor is simply a matter of taste and could go either way or worse.

As for GAAS its one of the few avenues catering towards both free-to-play markets and those often looking for pretty and attractive characters along with bright vibrant worlds. So much of the market is skewed towards FtP games its kind of the industry's undoing if things start to falter, no longer appeal or suffer other setbacks(delays, bugs, design choices). When the market is expecting to be able to play right away with no upfront investment and even do so for unlimited game time(ala western shooters such as Fortnite & Apex) in a social situation it eats away at the single player title's chances of success, especially when the upfront cost is so high and game design often quite bland or in some cases downright appalling.

A lot of long time gamers who used to hate GaaS are now playing them because theyre offering things single player games no longer seem to offer.

For example Zenless Zone Zero has:
- appealing/sexy characters
- an amazing cartoony/anime art style that invokes those Dreamcast/PS2 era vibes
- doesn't take itself too seriously, steers away from politics/social commentary
- top tier animation
- straight to the point, responsive action gameplay.

These descriptors are what you'd get from japanese action games in the late 90s / early 00s. But not anymore. So players have moved on to gacha instead.

It's also quite telling that Gacha games have produced countless popular characters over the past 5 years while japanese companies haven't produced any in the past 10 years aside from a handful like 2B. Companies like Capcom are relying heavily on the appealing characters Gen X devs created in the 90s like Leon Kennedy, Jill Valentine and Chun-Li. Their millenial/gen z artists and character designers suck ass.

It's not dumb at all. Everyone knows what a death rattle looks like of a console's last couple of years, and it shows in announcements and releases. Nintendo has stretched out the Switch's console lifecycle to it's absolute maximum, and now it's 2024 holiday lineup feels like leftovers while everyone is participating in a collective breath-hold for the Switch 2.

The damn thing should have released this fall. It had a clear and open runway to make a landing due to a light fall release schedule.

The only dumb thing here would be suddenly learning that the real reason they pushed back the Switch 2 release is simply because they wanted to dethrone the PS2 out of spite.

There could be major launch games that were not ready to release this fall so it's better to postpone the Switch 2 than to have a lackluster lineup.

What do you mean "Sony got away with it" bro, they lost hundreds of millions and they closed the studio causing dozens, if not hundreds of people to lose their jobs. Sony got ridiculed for months and it became the de-facto example of being out of touch with what people want.

It was a calamity in every sense of the word.
