Pretty much just symbolic, but good for them.

Over opposition from Israel and the United States, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a measure on Thursday that will allow Palestine to fly its flag in front of the organization's headquarters in New York.

The resolution, drafted by Palestine, applies to non-member observer states. The only other entity with that status is the Holy See, though the Vatican has said it would decline to hoist its flag. The Secretary General now has 20 days to arrange for the change, timing aimed to allow the flag to be raised in time for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' speech at the General Assembly on September 30.

The final vote saw 119 countries in favor, eight against, and abstentions from 45 member states. Those that voted against were Australia, Canada, Israel, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau, Tuvalu, and the United States.

"The United States will vote against this resolution but this vote is not a vote for the status quo or a rejection of Palestinian aspirations for statehood," US Ambassador Samantha Power told the General Assembly.

Keep kissing that Israeli ass, America.

Canada voted against it too.. 😓

One of several shitty things Canada likes to do.

http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/09/10/canada-palestinian-flag_n_8119598.html

The Canadian government under Stephen Harper has been a staunch supporter of Israel. Foreign Affairs Minister Rob Nicholson was in Israel in June to show Canada's "unwavering support" to the state.

Asked why Canada voted against the resolution, Diana Khaddaj, a spokeswoman for the department of Foreign Affairs told The Huffington Post Canada that the government "opposes unilateral actions on either side."

"Attempts to internationalize the conflict with Israel hinder efforts to create a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. Canada believes strongly in a two-state solution and calls on all parties to return to direct negotiations."

Give me a break.

So basically Israel owns the U.S. and even all of its little bitches. Fuck you Australia, take your fucking flag down from the building next.

Lol you know that spokeswoman thinks that it's BS.

Harper has beeeeen on Israel's nut sack. Pretty damn embarrassing for all Canadians.

There's a difference between not wanting the Palestinian flag flying at the UN and being opposed to Palestinian statehood.

"tonight on fox news: obama betrays israel? we go deep on how much damage obama has done to our relationship with israel and how he has aided palestinian terrorists"

Canada, Australia and the US.

All of them are Israel's bitch.

It's ridiculous how much sway that rogue nation has over these countries :/

The same countries voting No also voted no to palestine even getting non state observer status at the UN

Yea, Palestine has no shot at being a state if they keep getting vetoed like this, and the countries abstaining aren't doing any favours either.

Yeah, quickly realising that it is really him and his office. I was taken back when I saw Canada on the list of against, but now with these two posts, I'm reminded of how many times I heard of this guy and the bad decisions he made.

Palau, Tuvalu, Marshall Islands and Micronesia. What do they gain by voting against this?

I get why AUS, Canada and the US voted against it, but the others stick out like a sore thumb.

Not fimilar with Tuvalu, but the others are associated states with the United states. They pretty much just follow whatever the US votes.

Tuvalu is party to a treaty of friendship with the United States, signed soon after independence and ratified by the US Senate in 1983, under which the United States renounced prior territorial claims to four Tuvaluan islands (Funafuti, Nukufetau, Nukulaelae and Niulakita) under the Guano Islands Act of 1856.[85]

this probably explains it

Holy hell, I'm disgusted by my country.

The U.S. needs to drop Israel like a bad habit. Such a one-way relationship.

What an attack on Israel's right on a Jewish State this is. Everybody has an ethnic and religious pure state but only Israel gets shamed for it. Take down the flag!!

Good stuff.

The USA is in this topic like the very resignated boyfriend of a hysterical Israel.

"Why did you talk to that bitch? Do you hate me, do you hate me? I swear, she wants to destroy me! I don't care if I settled in her room first, you hate me! You HATE me!"

And the poor USA is buying Israel some shiny rockets and guns to pacify it for the day.

Money. Palau, Micronesia, and the Marshall Islands get a lot of aid from the US ("according to the estimates, U.S. assistance in fiscal years 2011 through 2024 would total $427 million" for Palau alone), and it looks like Australia gives aid to Tuvalu and the others as well.

Why does Palestine fighting for independence and legitimacy through non-violent, official means bothers Israel and the US so much? Isn't this exactly what they've been telling the Palestinians to do for decades? Violence wasn't getting them anywhere, so they are trying a different path and getting some success.

Because we play a stupid diplomacy game where we don't officially recognize Palestine on the voting record while technically supporting Palestine's existence via other means

A similar game exists where everyone knows Israel has nukes but nobody officially recognizes Israel as having nukes

As if Israel cares. They want the whole land and they want it for jews only. A state from jews for jews. The USA is between a rock and a hard place. They are certainly uncomfortable with what Israel does, but the strategic ally is too important to them.

Not like the whole west was funding and cooperating with hundreds of dictators and bad countries in the past.

What I dont get is, why vote against something like this? What exactly do you get by not allowing them to fly their flag outside the UN?

Phew at least it wasn't the UK :p Although being a bitch by abstaining.

What Micronesia, Palau, Tuvalu, or the Marshall Islands got to gain from this though? Welp, seems like Micronesia, Palau, Marshall Islands are US-associated.

That just leaves Tuvalu, though. Not surprised at Canada and Australia, they got fucked up leaders. Canada's Stephen Harper wants to criminalise criticism of Israel, calls boycotts "the new face of anti-Semitism" lmao.

Fucking hell, that was my joke reasoning... That's just sad

I always wondered what Israeli Jews think about the Evangelicals that support them in order to bring about Israel's supposed destruction, thus paving the way for the Jesus' return.

The dynamics of this relationship is seriously disturbing.

Will he be replaced, though?
Not really.

The 2 left leaning parties will cannibalize each other at this rate, thus leaving Canada with a minority Conservative government, which admittedly is still better than the current majority they wield.

This isn't representative of Canadians, it's representative of a leader who we will be replacing in 2 months.
Iirc both Liberals and NDP offered unwavering support for Israel ('has a right to defend itself') during the 2014 Gaza conflict while Israel was killing children with zero accountability.
