The UK pretty much always abstains on matters of Israel being dicks, mostly because the UK played such a large role in the creation of the initial situation that triggered the problems.

Been waiting for this to happen. We know the US is under Israel's whip, but I'm astounded at all the other countries who voted against it.

Don't they realise how this make them look like complete assholes? The whole thing is also pretty much just symbolic, but it seems like Israel wants to show absolutely no good will towards Palestine in any UN vote

Half of those countries are just the US. Tiny islands with puppet governments that exist purely to pad UN votes.

This is pathetic. Can't throw those people a bone no matter what? So disgusted that our taxes go to Israel, and that we are its teeth.

The US's overlords are gonna be unhappy with this. Quick, send them a few extra billion and some new weaponary to threaten their neighbours with.

Bibi is a war criminal, and all the high ranking military officers should be on trial at the Hague now, for what happened last year in gaza

OK, serious question, why does the US always act as Israel's bitch? It's not because any promised land stuff, right? That can't be right?

Three reasons:

1. The lobby from AIPAC and other pro-Israel groups as well as wealthy campaign donors like Haim Saban and Sheldon Adelson.
2. The military-industrial complex. Israel is at a constant state of war and needs a steady stream of weapons from US industries.
3. Religious nonsense. Fundamentalist Christians believe certain things have to take place in order for Jesus to reappear on Earth.

I get 2 but surely there must be other rich folk and why do they care anyway, Israel isn't going to be left behind and vanish, US will step up without being threatened, do they just enjoy a good old ethnic cleansing. 3, nah that can't be true, please don't be true.

Say one day, Obama or whoever does the opposite of what they've done here and other recent times, call out Israel etc. what's the worst that could happen, Israel get annoyed and do what, not help them out with stuff. Would lobby groups destroy the President and the party? I say call their bluff.

BBC: "Palestinian flag raised at United Nations headquarters"
The Palestinian flag has been raised for the first time at United Nations headquarters in New York.

The ceremony was attended by the President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas.

Addressing the UN General Assembly, Mr Abbas said it was unconscionable that the question of Palestinian statehood remained unresolved.
Writing in the Huffington Post on Tuesday, Mr Abbas had said the raising of the Palestinian flag at the UN would be "a most emotional and proud day".

The UN General Assembly passed a motion earlier this month to raise the Palestinian and Vatican flags. Israel voted against the motion, along with the United States and six other countries. Forty-five countries also abstained.

Israel's permanent representative to the UN, Ron Prosor, said at the time that the move was a "blatant attempt to hijack the UN". He insisted that the only way Palestinians could achieve statehood was through direct negotiations.

Mahmoud Abbas via Huffington Post: "The First-Ever Raising of Palestine's Flag at the U.N. Is Our Moment of Hope"
The General Assembly's vote confirmed again that we, the people of Palestine, are not alone in our quest for freedom, fulfillment of our rights and an end to decades of Israeli occupation and oppression. On September 30, we will raise our flag in a peaceful gesture that will remind all that justice and independence is ultimately possible. To get to this destination, we need the support of our friends around the world and the leadership of the U.N.

As the U.N. this year marks its 70th anniversary, its longest-standing, unresolved issue is the question of Palestine. For more than 68 years, my people have been denied their rights and denied freedom. In 1948, we were cast out of our places of birth and those of our ancestors; our homes and heritage were destroyed; we were expelled or fled into exile to what were to be temporary camps until the conflict and question of Palestinian statehood were resolved.

Today, Palestinians remain in exile, with over five million refugees denied their right to return. An illegal, oppressive Israeli occupation denies basic human rights, including the right of people to self-determination and freedom -- a foundational principle of the U.N. But the Palestinian people have not given up hope and have not given up their rightful and just quest to live in independence and peace in our homeland.

There's a difference between not wanting the Palestinian flag flying at the UN and being opposed to Palestinian statehood.

Possibly, but given the context of the vote, can you name a country that voted against this and supports Palestinian statehood?
