Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

I have been waiting so long for an MMO shooter that does combat like an actual good shooter. Throw in a massive world, adding stuff to do all the time and shiny loot....Give it to me.

Don't forget the "good single player story".

Oh, and I don't care if it's basic hero against aliens fare. There is a limited amount of that on the Playstation platform so Destiny is something all of us last generation Playstation owners can embrace as a new experience. We didn't get burnt out on Halo.

Destiny has adopted elements of Call of Duty's "rich get richer" gameplay, not all of them, but some of them with PvP, which i'm just going to call multiplayer at this moment. Since you bring all your weapons over to multiplayer, this means you spawn with a shotgun. Or a sniper rifle. Or a rocket launcher. Or a chaingun.

Well this is terribly disappointing. Was hoping for weapons on map, equal starting weapons. It goes off your RPG style progress? Yuck.

Aaaaah I think I'm gonna have to go buy a PS4 right this minute to play this this weekend. Hopefully I didn't already get ruled out for not having one already!
but if I did, and someone wanted to hook me up... ;)

Oh BTW for those worried about microtransactions. There are none right now. Where Bungie is going to make money is going to be the DLC be they maps for Crucible, expansions, etc. That's where they're going to get their money from. Course who knows what the future has in store. The game really truly though isn't set up to microtransaction you to death like they easily could have. I really like that they did not go that route.

To be honest I'd probably prefer purchasable cosmetic items or engrams used to subsidize free multiplayer maps, Mass Effect 3 style. On the other hand they'e hopefully fixed matchmaking to make finding games on DLC maps less of a problem so this is probably fine too.

I'm SO glad there's a in-game screen-bounds setting. I'm so sick of overscan.

Do you have acces to the whole old Russia map? And if so how big is it n comparison to Halo campaign maps?

You do. It's damn huge. I really couldn't say. If I had to pick a halo level I'd say remember the 1st level in Halo 1 where you got to the ring. Imagine multiple of that level fitting into Old Russia Easily. It's just so hard to say but it's damn damn huge.

it's biiiig, there are places underneath the level with additional zones, but each "bubble" is about the size of an invasion map from reach (think boneyard) and there are about 7-8 of them linked up together with smaller linear zones in between.

Also, I'd like to mention they damn near answered every question we threw at them technical wise. Of course they aren't going to answer some stuff marketing would be handling.

For those that know me from the Halo thread, if you let me ask technical questions, I will ask your ears off. So some tidbits for the tech nerds:

- They can push about 28 AI total over the wire. This is partly due to the game being on last gen as well (performance reasons). Technically it can go higher but players count against the total. They carefully manage AI placement so you don't notice the limit.

- They technically have the back end to do cross-platform stuff, like using characters no matter which version you are playing. It's up Microsoft and Sony to allow it. So far, your stuff is on the platform you play on.

- They have tons of levers and buttons to use for enemies to tweak the encounters. Switching to Legend for example, changes the type of enemies you encounter, not just their stats. Some inside Bungie feel Legend is too easy for them and want to make an even higher difficulty than Legend.

- Dan Miller talked that the tools have improved, although there's the usual relearning from making the new tools involved. Neat stuff in their toolset now.

Thank you. So it sounds like you can just wander for literally hours going from new encounter to new encounter.

What a weekend to choose to be going camping on the west coast of Scotland. No electricity, never mind internet connection. Should still get Thursday and Friday nights to play, unless I get hooked up early...

There streaming multiplayer right now on IGN. Almost over.

Looks like COD. you have a load-out you can bring it.
Showing a hardpoint type game like from Titanfall. It's called Control.
You can taunt in multiplayer. One taunt is dancing.
You supercharge ability is like getting a Titan in Titanfall. It's on a timer but will come quicker if you get kills.
Winning matches in the game gets you rewards such as loot.
No instant respawning.

The game looks really, really good, and what's more there seems to be so much content packed into it. I just don't understand the hate for it.

It's not identical to Halo, but it shouldn't be anyways.

This was discussed last night. There isn't hate for the title, but there was a growing lack of interest and disappointment for some reason (which I couldn't understand).

Today appears to be the day that Bungie gets those who may have jumped off the hype train back on.

This is going to be the only multiplayer shooter I play over the next 12 months....and maybe even longer if there truly is a good backstory and Bungie keeps expanding the universe.

I don't think you have access to the entirety of old Russia. There are a couple places where the enemies are way too strong to kill and they will one-hit you.

I wouldn't say hours but to go from one end of the map to the other can take a couple minutes when boosting on your Sparrow. More so when you have to go through buildings to get to some areas. Exploration wise there is always something new you're finding. You can get lost just exploring every single tiny nook.It all really depends on how detailed you get when exploring.

If I was to heavily namedrop I would say it has the combat polish & intriguing A.I of Halo, the calmness and explorative nature of Fallout 3 / Skyrim and the social & progress aspects of WoW.

It's sort of like The Last of Us in that it may not be revolutionary in a singular aspect but how it nails and ties together a multitude of experiences puts it on another level altogether.

Do you happen to know if there's a level cap in place for the alpha, by any chance? I wonder how far they'll let people get in the character progression.
You can play levels 4 through 8. However, you can still upgrade individual characteristics of your player, like guns in some ways, and your jump.

there are lots of nooks and crannies to explore too, some caves will have enemies, others will have chests, some will have lore related things, so exploring them is pretty worthwhile.

Hi guys, are the codes sent out yet ? i signed up with 3 different PSN accounts yesterday but got nothing so far

thanks !

This is exactly how I feel (based on watching).

It's going to be so awesome playing with friends. I have some who don't like competitive mp, some who prefer it, and I get to enjoy the game wiith all of them!

Exploration is the best thing about Destiny. I love, love when you visit an area, think you've seen it all, then revisit it and discover a new path that leads to some place different.

Old Russia has some breathtaking moments of exploration, like the one I mentioned in the OP. Also, if you explore carefully enough, you can play through that mission Bungie demoed at Sony's event last May.

I gotta say, finding my way through the Wall and emerging on the other side was something to behold.

How many of (Halo) GAF have been playing? Have you guys randomly ran into each other? Does the game push you towards friends even if you are not partied up?

Have you experienced anyone being a dick, if so how were they able to annoy you?

Do you get multiple character slots in the alpha? Do the three classes feel sufficiently different, or are they mostly for 'flavor'?
DeeJ mentioned being able to tell which mode a player got their gear from by looking at them. If you can do that already, what makes strike and crucible gear different?

Yup. I really can't wait to see the other planets and hell even other locations that might be on earth. As much time as I've spent exploring Old Russia it's insane to think that I'm seeing such a very small sliver of the content to explore.

Yes. Right now you can make 3 characters. I'd say it's mostly flavor on feel. Their abilities and how you spec will make them feel somewhat different but overall this is very much still a shooter. Bungie was not lying about that. As a result they will feel somewhat similar.

Looks slow. And floaty. I'm too addicted to freedom and speed that Titan Fall grants. Well hope those that like this sort of style enjoy the alpha. Goodluck to everyone that will play.

How's that singleplayer working for ya? Happy you're content with da Titans.

I have. A guy I know from GAF was being annoying and following me around for a bit while I was in the Tower one day, and I left when he got too annoying.

I don't foresee that being a problem come release because the population will be much larger.

The A .I. Has been crtisized in the videos. How is it really? As good as halo? Better? Worse?

It's hard to say. I've sit and watched AI fight between themselves and it reminds me of Halo. The way some of the encounters are set up they are thrown at you in numbers. In others they may be fewer but they seem pretty dynamic. Right now though I'd say on the harder difficulties it's on par. I've seen AI take cover and back off when I start to get the upper hand. I've seen some go one way and others another almost as if trying to pin me between them. That's just my opinion. I'm sure some others would probably disagree though.

As good as Halo's. There's also difficulty settings which modifies their aggressiveness.

Their likelihood of attacking you seems adjusted for what you're going. Like free roam, you have to get close to engage, but this is good since it'd suck to be cruising around and just get domed. But on Strikes, they pretty much want your blood. They flank, fall back to other buddies when you thin them out, etc.

There was a Strike we did where a 3-way fight started between us, Fallen, and the Hive. It was neat as hell to be in. Magic and bullets and gore flying everywhere.

I had no idea this game had so many RPG mechanics and similarities to BL2. I am completely sold after the GB quick look.

The polish on the UI is just crazy. I am also a sucker for look games these days.

Have you found any tricks yet like PP / BR or BXR? Is there a particular thing that seems to work? Is there anything you can abuse?

Yea. I think you put it better then I could. That's one reason with some of the longer range of weapons they can feel weak on exploration. Some of these weapons you can dong on them from a huge distance and they are leashed in to certain areas more then they would have been in the Halo days. Course unlike Halo again this game has a huge open world where as in Halo you only had set levels.
