Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

I bought a heavy machine gun from the gunsmith and my brother got an RPG from a random drop I think.

Yeah, it was an encrypted item that turned into a RPG. Liking the Hand Cannon and Sniper. Warlocks are really amusing to play as well!

Did also see Gaz_RB running too, went "Wait, that name looks familiar..."

This has made me really hype for beta and release as Borderlands didn't really do it for me but this... So good!

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Clan link for alphas from gaf who want to join. Let me know if it doesn't work. If not just let me know your Bungie name and I'll add you.

Applied.

Really enjoying the game, by the way. Surprisingly more difficult than I was expecting -- first thing I did was go down a staircase into a bunker and got wrecked.

Feels less like Borderlands and more like a true MMOFPS, imo. Which is a good thing.

Two things I hope are fixed: Not being able to spin my character around during creation (chose a hairstyle because it looked good from the front, didn't like it from the back or the side) and the UI is a bit hard to read in-game because of how bright/bloomy the game is. I LOVE the overall aesthetic of the UI, it's just a bit hard to read at times.

I'm hyped from just looking at the UI! It just looks fantastic from what I'm seeing on streams and videos. I'm loving the fonts and where all the icons are placed and the spacing between them. It just looks very clean and modern.

It's a bit confusing that the Alpha doesn't tie into your current Bungie.net account. There is no sign in option, had to create a new account. Hopefully those who were in the Alpha can be recognized somehow in the beta and/or full game.

They've said that, as with any other MP game on PS3, PS+ is not required. It is only required on PS4.
Watching the GB quick look, it seemed PS+ would be required for some multiplayer, but not all.

You've got the competitive multiplayer taking place at The Crucible. Control is the only mode currently available, and the description notes it's 6v6, requires PS+, and offers matchmaking. Down on Earth, there are three mission types; Story, Explore, and Strike. Strikes are kind of like raids, with an end boss and a bunch of loot as a reward. The available Strike says it's co-op for 1-3 players, requires PS+, and offers matchmaking. Edit: They also appear to be optional.

The available Story and Explore missions are also co-op for 1-3 players, but offer no matchmaking and don't require PS+. I suspect you can play these mission types online with your Friends via invites, but you won't be able to play these modes with random strangers, since they offer no matchmaking. However, not offering the matchmaking seems to let them skirt the PS+ requirement, allowing you to party up with your friends for the campaign, but forcing you to do so "manually."

Also, them taking the screen space to specify "1-3 players, co-op" for every mission leads me to believe that those parameters may not be the same for every mission. Maybe you could have a competitive Strike, with fabulous booty going to whomever reaches it first.

I think they bother to say that because Raids, not featured in the alpha, are designed for 6 players, and the crucible not being co-op gives reason to differentiate from it, too. But who knows.

Why the fuck would/should they do that?

While I haven't played the game yet. It seems very counterintuitive to me that they give you these great mobility tools like double jumps and hovering. Only to then penalize you for using them in battle.

Goddamn he got knocked the fuck out lol

Wow. "Halo pro". Had a look for a few minutes and he is such a douche.

Game looks good from E3 demos and trailers. Don't like MMO's though so does it feel like an MMO Dex or does it play fine on your own?

Ninja really just comes off as a huge douche indeed. I don't know if he is, since I dislike watching his stream so much that I always have to close it almost immediately after opening it.

Those are just different ways of doing the exact same thing. Numbers, words, X-ray shots in slow motion are all ways to show damage feedback. Why are the latter two better than the former? Just a preference?

Words aren't exactly better, I'll admit, but that's closer to what would happen in reality compared to a bunch of numbers flashing up. That said, they're all things that should be optional. If someone wants to opt in, fine. However it shouldn't be forced on everybody.

Sorry...but i dont get how you dont understand that if youre less SKILLED than someone at using that mobility tool you should be penalized for it.

Not defending the guy or anything but he's won several big tournaments for halo so I guess he can put professional on his stream.

btw, for everyone in the alpha, alpha.bungie.net has things like grimore cards, which detail lore, as well as stats and other things, so you may want to check it out. Along with the destiny gaf group.

That time-lapse video really shows how Destiny isn't lifeless.

Wow that time-lapse vid is amazing. I could of sworn snow would accumulate in the more snowy areas while playing the game in real time but looking at the vid I'm not sure about that now. Those clouds moving along like that at that pace give me the feels haha.

Yup. It's a great resource. Nice to see it being updated too with some more details, etc.

Ah, I hadn't heard of Raids, but I haven't really been following the game. How do they differ from Strikes, apart from the number of players? Do you know if they'll be part of the campaign, like Story and Explore, or will they be "side stuff," like Strikes and The Crucible?

Anyway, it's pretty cool they're letting you co-op the campaign with your buddies even if you don't have PS+. ^^

Edit: Oh, I got an alpha code from the E3 thing, so if anyone wants to add me, please do. <3

I think it plays fine on its own. It's MMO-like in the sense that you run across other people while playing, but the game seems to be designed to keep a good balance of people phased in together. It walks a fine line between feeling barren and feeling crowded (which some would find immersion breaking) so you usually feel like you're part of a rag-tag group of Guardians. The game doesn't have mob tagging as far as I can tell, so joining in on already-engaged targets is encouraged.

It's not incredibly hard to find yourself alone, but the maps appear to be designed with bottlenecks in mind so that people tend to meet up or stumble upon others in firefights, which really adds a lot of life to the game.

scale, loot, and difficulty are what i've heard are the major differences. I'm sure they'll incorporate story elements into it as well.

Thanks for the response man. That's what I thought it might be like. I'm pretty much a solo player but I don't mind teaming with people now and again as long as most of the content isn't group focused.

Just tried the Strike mission in the game. It was so much fun! Pretty challenging too, imo. Had an E3 dude in my game too, that was fun to see haha. Tried to keep them in the game as much as I could.

This prolly has been asked a thousand times but i thought i was able to play it today and i even pre ordede to get the beta code.. so how come i cant play the game..
