Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Okay I was pretty much already sold on the game. But at least now I have a good idea what the game is.

The flashpoint was so much fun. Felt like Halo legendary coop with bosses. I do think the Devil Walker(?) was way much of a bullet sponge. That said it was me and 2 others and none of us had heavy weapons. So maybe that was the issue.

I cannot wait for September now. I feel like this game is going to be my new go to game when bored.

Are there heavy weapons in the alpha?

so far the only special weapons I've found are shotguns and fusion rifles
Yeah, I found a heavy weapon as a drop from an enemy at some point, and I found a couple heavy weapon encrypted engrams as well.

As for specials, I bought a sniper from the gunsmith on the tower, but I think those may be the only 3 types of specials in the alpha?

Has anyone tried this in remote play?

Absolutely dreamy. Love the control scheme, aside from missing emotes. Looks and plays great on the Vita. Great to just free roam to.

I just happened to pick up a Heavy Weapon wandering around Old Russia. Can't remember if it was an enemy drop or in one of the few chests I found.

It was just a generic rocket launcher, but it fucked up the Moon Wizard pretty good, which was pretty satisfying.

I haven't PVP'd since I picked it up, so I don't know if it would let me bring it over. Seems like it should, right?

Like you found an actual weapon? In PvP you can get heavy ammo but I have no weapons to use them with.

I found a rocket launcher last night. Pressing triangle didn't switch to it, and shortly after, I went to bed.

I also had a problem with collectibles falling through the map.

If there is one thing I really didn't like about this game it's the human male hairstyles. I think most of them are pretty awful. Will definitely not play one of those.

ABSOLUTELY. We are going to need WAAAAAAAAY more hair options in the final version, maybe tesselation for longer hair styles.

Haha, yeah some of them look like female haircuts. Make me think that they just carried them over as placeholders.

Not sure if this is true. Only one of my PSN friends has a PS4/the alpha (And I never ran into him), I didn't change any settings, and I saw tons of random people on the Tower and ran into people running around in Old Russia several times.

.

I think there is a difference between meeting people and them being in your fireteam?

Hold Triangle, pressing won't do it. You'll swap to it after a second.

Edit: Beaten

Hmm...don't know if I like that.

This is not explained in the game -

press triangle to switch between your primary and special weapon

hold triangle to switch to your heavy weapon

Okay gotcha. I didn't realize the Glide was basically a directional jetpack for the longest time either. "Glide" is a bad way of describing that maneuver.

Not liking how sluggish the game feels.. It feels like some action have delays to them at times.. Especially when sprinting, then aiming. Also, turning rapidly is the same at times. It feels almost as bad as killzone SF in this aspect. Hope they can tighten up the controls.

I have played for 4 hours and the game is good, its deeper than I thought.

What I like:
Controls feel tight and responsive
Love the ease you can jump into friends games
The skill/talent/leveling system is great and based on how much you use your abilities, I love this (think Ratchet and Clank's guns)
Enemies re-spawn quickly so you don't have to wait for a long time for drops (yes there are drop quests)
Quests auto-complete no cashing in
PvP is fast, fun and fluid plus with the bounties you can pick up (max 5, think PvP quests) gives you nice PvP progression, I am not a PvP FPS player at all.

What I don't like:
It seems you can, at least as of now, only have 1 quest at a time.
Quests can lead you away from other quests so sometimes you are running back and forth, not huge but kinda tedious. Having the ability to pick up multiple quests would remedy this.

This game has taken me by surprise I was losing faith in it as Bungie seemed to confused on what their game was, I can tell you this it's good.

Agreed with a lot here, but I am also a bit bummed at the AI. Have yet to really see the enemies do anything really clever beyond NOT standing still. They seem to rarely take advantage of my retreats and mostly just inhabit the small region they spawn in and shimmy back and forth to avoid bullet spray. I keep waiting for any real sign of intelligence beyond side stepping and keeping on the move in very small quarters boundaries, but it ain't happening. Another example of a game that overwhelms the player with sheer numbers than brutal foes. The respawns can be weird too, especially when they port in right on top of me. Just not entirely convinced the large environments are being taken advantage of. :(

Shooting and co-op is a good time though, but I have some real concerns regarding the opposition and mission design now.

Not an issue for me. I thing having ones like that and some weird ones is cool. Problem is there isn't really much when it comes to very standard male haircuts except for bald guy and short har and spikes up front. I think it's less of an issue with the Awoken, just the Human male selection bothers me. I know it's a weird complaint but for a game where you create your own character and stick with him or her for a long time I wish the selection there would be better.

I thought the AI might have been limited to a vision cone, and were panicking when I was shooting them down from far away...but then it's like, naw, they're just dumb.

You press Triangle to switch between your primary weapon and special weapon. You HOLD triangle to switch to the heavy weapon

EDIT: Beaten several times

This is not explained in the game -

press triangle to switch between your primary and special weapon

hold triangle to switch to your heavy weapon

When I equipped the Rocket Launcher some text popped up saying to hold triangle to switch to it, otherwise I wouldn't have known how. So it is explained in game

hold triangle to switch to your heavy weapon

It actually is explained in the game. When you first unlock the ability to carry a third weapon. It pops up on screen to hold triangle to use it and look out for purple ammo drops.

Seems like the casting choice of Peter Dinklage as the Ghost is universally agreed to be a miscast. Does not fit well at all. I think they should have went with a voice actor with a bit more .. character. Comic relief perhaps.

God no

I like him enough disregarding some bad delivery on the hive lines and stuff but i'd take that over another fucking claptrap/jar jar wacky sidekick

EDIT: i'm really liking the alpha, but the giant purple ball thing in the strike took way too long. wasn't fun, just tedious. I jumped in part way to a group and it took maybe 15 minutes of us firing on him/clearing out dudes

thats just way too long to be holding the trigger on a guy who doesn't react to damage

I found it, it's cool, but either I missed something or that area doesn't really lead to anywhere. Just the rusted cars and then the edge of the map.

Doesn't lead to anywhere? It's the fookin rusty car graveyard!

In these types of games and MMOs I'm primarily an explorer and a lore fiend. Getting there WAS the whole battle and experience! I was floored and got the chills when I realized where I was.

Do we have any idea if Beta will have a wider swath of content than Alpha? I assume the answer is yes, but at the same time, I wouldn't be too shocked if Beta is just a bug-fixed, tweaked version of the Alpha.

If anyone is still having problems playing and you are still getting error codes. Try making a new psn account from another country. It worked for me. At least I can play it. I hope the Beta works with my main account.

The game has me hooked and I just started!

I don't know about the Human hair, but the Awoken male hair selection was not very good. The few face paint options weren't great either. Hope there are more options in the full game

He's fine, its that his lines are bad. I get that he's a robot and he should be kinda stiff...but seriously why does the machine emote at some times, but then not others? It's a really odd decision in voice direction to go in.

Finished the Strike mission. The armoured spider must have taken at least 15 minutes on its own. Otherwise it was pretty cool

With that, free roam and the first story mission (and crucible) is that it content wise?

Is this game like an MMO where there is an Open world with heaps of players to interact with or is it all instance based.

Pretty fun so far, reached lvl 8. I'll test the pvp water today. One thing I'm not sure about is how much HP the bosses got in Devil's Lair, boss encounter take a LONG time.

Played like an hour last night. A few thoughts:

  • First and foremost: this looks, feels, and plays like a Bungie game, which is a huge plus for me. The Halo series will always be my favorite series, and this doesn't disappoint.
  • The game just throws you in. I don't know if they intend to hold your hand a bit in the release, but it took me a while to figure out what the heck I was doing. Am I in PVE? PVP? Where am I?
  • Once I figured out that I was in some starter mission/quest, it was ok. I found the first mission to be a bit annoying. I wanted to run around and explore, but I kept running into packs of mobs that I had to kill. Those gun fights didn't feel as fun as a Halo fight, but maybe it is because those were low level enemies. Also, to echo a post from today: the world is pretty bland. This is something that is hard to judge in an alpha, though.
  • Specifics about the first mission:
The end of the first mission was really cool but confusing. There are no tips on how to kill that damn Wizard. Luckily, I figured out how to use my Golden Gun thing and I eventually blasted it away.
  • I really enjoy Peter Dinklage as the Ghost thing
  • After the first mission, I jumped into multiplayer. Felt good overall. Like a Bungie multiplayer should. This will be really, really good at release.
  • The world is absolutely gorgeous. I cannot wait to explore it more.

When you go into the Strike it tells you about potential de-buffs to your weapons. I noticed that once I had better equipment going in the whole thing is way faster because you actually do the all the damage your weapon can do.

The emotes (and run) are there. Emotes are the dpad direction PLUS the corresponding Square Circle Cross Triangle button. I'm forgetting Run but there was a chart posted from E3 a few pages back.

Yeah was deciding between Human Male Warlock and Exo Male Warlock.... and Exo is easily the best-looking imo.
