[Destructoid] Leaked photo of NX controller?

See my post above. The point of that screenspace on the side would be to have buttons or HUD items that you can touch with your fingers. "But why use screenspace?" Because with a screen they can change the shape, orientiation, color, size, etc of the buttons. It really isn't far-fetched.

But you are still holding it like a controller, not a phone and part of your hands will cover the screen. Especially when you have large hands. It is an absolutely ridiculous design. If it is even real.

Lol good one.

Not too bad. There is probably going to be a final revision with improvements. We'll see...

I could go either way on this, but I think I'm #teamreal.

The thing that is sticking out to me is how there is a really big area for the analog stick. I wonder if they are removable? Maybe you could take off an analog stick and replace it with a standard four button diamond configuration? That would solve a lot of the issues with this setup. This is of course rampant speculation.

He's saying it's not from Nintendo?

He's saying he doesn't know wtf it is, but will somehow try to take video of it. It's fake. Why would an office for a dev have tape over the company name? Nothing the "source" says on Reddit makes any damn sense.

I really don't get the hand covering the screen complaint. I don't know how people are holding their controllers but you definitely shouldn't be covering a noticeable amount
Uh, there are buttons below the right thumb in that pic. The fingers need to be there.

The problem is it does look like something stupid Nintendo would push. Looks like another gen down the drain for them if this is true.

Come on. There are pads on both sides of the screen, through the screen, covering part of the image, lol.

Bullshit. Nintendo literally just put out Splatoon, a new online third person shooter about squids and covering arenas with ink, and even on their failure console it sold incredibly well. Why would that change when they have an exponentially larger install base but still get to slap the Nintendo brand on all of their games?
Splatoon was a risk lol.. get real. You cant just be making like that as a third party. Sega dont ever make space channel, jet set radio, seaman, alex kidd, racing games anymore.. hell shenmue got kickstarted by a first party lol

screenshot_2016-03-18bnqd7.jpg

so i got some exclusive information:
1+5 show arrows on the pic (the true purpose will be revealed during this month)
2 is a clickable trigger like the ones found on gc (nintendo reinvents triggers)
4+6 show morphed buttons (buttons can disappear, if not needed)
7 is a microphone and a camera(for the casuals)

/obvious troll from reddit gets an answer like that.
this was also found in one of the nintendo direct folders from march.
i cant tell you the source though.

What are you claiming #3 is?

Does this thing seriously have your hands covering up the screen with non-physical buttons? It seems Nintendo heard all of those points on why people prefer controllers/portables over touch screen and decided they were wrong.

But third party Nintendo will be different because ---

Has there ever been a true Nintendo console leak?

The leaks for the dolphin prototype, the "revolution", and whatever else the Wii U was called before were never really accurate. I think we're all jumping the gun here.

No one knew how to make an analog stick controller. N64 was treading new waters (yes, there were some clunky analog based controllers here and there before the N64). It wasn't until many iterations later that the modern gamepad took shape.
I see what you're saying and I'm not really blaming Nintendo. Well, I kinda am. They could have just went a simpler and overall better route had they known better. It wasn't too long after the N64 that the Saturn and Playstation had their sticks that are pretty much the standard placement today.

No d-pad? Wow that's a big leap for Nintendo.

Nintendo nearly did away with it in the all-3D era actually, Sony, Sega, and Microsoft never did, but this was a GameCube prototype:

cubeoriginal.jpg

Nintendo graphics partner ATI featured a booth at the recent Comdex show and as journalists entered it for meetings they were treated to a glass-encased look at the Gamecube hardware complete with motherboard display, optical disc and controller. But there was definitely something odd about the controller -- it wasn't quite the shining design that Nintendo had unveiled at Space World 2000, but rather a decidedly less polished take on it
http://www.ign.com/articles/2000/11/18/cube-controller-from-start-to-finish

This is on the same page as their infamous mockup, which also did not feature a d-pad based on rumours. The model unveiled at Spaceworld had one but I doubt IGN was lying or faking that picture.

Even if you're completely right, touchscreen virtual buttons are the worst. Ugh.
Eh, I dunno. I can see the merit in it. More controller layout variety could be a plus. More "button variety" between games could be good (e.g. simply displaying an "Equip" menu in an RPG instead of having to press 'Y')

People are always complaining about not being able to customize button layout. Imagine being able to "unlock" the screen and slide your standard 4 ABXY buttons into any orientation that you'd like.

Not saying that's what this is, but the touchscreen controls aren't an inherently bad option.

But you are still holding it like a controller, not a phone and part of your hands will cover the screen. Especially when you have large hands. It is an absolutely ridiculous design. If it is even real.
You're overthinking this. From a traditional standpoint that extra screen space seems like a "waste", but what if those edge areas are filled with various menus, buttons, and shortcuts that you can quickly tap with your thumb? The purpose of the edge area (if this is real) isn't to display more of the game world, but to simply server as a palette for whatever buttons the dev wants to put into the game.

A game like Monster Hunter 4 U is a great example of this concept. It let you customize your bottom screen with a ton of different menu styles, buttons, maps, and you could even adjust the size and orientation of some of the buttons.

I'm referring to the finger covering aspect. Lots of people are mentioning that their hands are going to be covering the screen when there's very little space a thumb should take up

Looks like someone with too much time on their hand made a mockup based on that patent. This didn't look like a great idea then and it looks no better as a mockup.

I cant believe people are still saying they "need" to go third party. If you actually look at long term financials Nintendo is doing absolutely fine.
I'm not talking financials. I'm talking everything else. They suck at the console game and have for a very long time. There have been much worse than them over the years, but they get by and thrive on their games despite their hardware, not because of it.

Sega followed mainstream trends and started to make what works not because they stopped making consoles, but because they were just a general video game publisher like everyone else. They're from a different time where grand sequels and new IP were treated differently. Comparing them to Nintendo isn't taking into account that Nintendo is here in 2016 and Sega left consoles before Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed were annualized and everything were sequels.

Also, it's strange that this is even a thing we're arguing about, because Nintendo is a pretty safe company in terms of their general brands. Pokemon, Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Smash, they take risks inside their own bubbles but Nintendo aren't bastions of risk takers that can only be preserved if they continue to make games for their own box. They just made four New Super Mario Bros. games that all look generally the same.
