[Destructoid] Leaked photo of NX controller?

This Nintendo gonna Nintendo bullshit is so idiotic. They have their own way and sometimes its good, sonetimes its bad but at least they try to do new things and not just as gimmick, no they try to change the whole way you play. That u ecpect the NX to be a mess is nice but what does that have to do with this controller? Maybe its the best piece of hardware your hands have ever feeled but because of "wah, wah stupid gimmick, bla bla" u will never hold it in your own hands.
Gamers should at least try new things before they shit on everything. Same with VR...how many hate it already but never tried it? DOA and shit like that? Gamers always say they want something new but when they get something delivered they are to shy to use it...

Humans by nature resist change and try to shoot down anything they don't know much about and therefore feel uncomfortable with. They become defensive and turn to mockery to not feel inferior when they see their beloved tradition slowly taken away from them. They feel their very existence is being threatened and something must be done to stop it. Sometimes this is called ignorance.

Only a handful welcome change and are willing to see what it might bring.

I'm going to do like I haven't seen anything. If this is what's left for handhelds now that Sony's leaving the market, I'd better start investing on a few spare Vitas. Maybe even a 3DS.

Bad design, gimmicky concept, laughable to most people. Yup it's a Nintendo controller.

Please give one other example apart from the Wii U Gamepad, since you find it so enticing to be the 203rd person in this thread to come bumbling in with a "Nintendo gonna Nintendo"-post.

Usually patent applications use made up, different shapes to avoid giving away the final product.

It´s fake.
I hope.

Seems like a prototype devkit controller, like the boxy PS4 devkit controller that got leaked before the official reveal.

Can't believe they are sticking with the idea of having a controller completely filled with screen though. Because that just screams 'gimmick' in every way.

Oh well, at least it's going to be fun to watch Nintendo fans come to terms with this thing if it's real.

I'm a diehard Nintendo fan, but come on, man, having a weird controller has been their thing since at least the N64 days

N64 - Designed for people with 3 hands (?), only 1 analog stick, looks sort of like a spaceship

GCN - Secretly the best controller ever made, but once revealed people mocked that giant green A button relentlessly. It generally looked bizarrely laid out, like some sort of toy, they were criticized heavily for having a fake 2nd analog stick.

Wiimote - There's a weird amount of "ends justify the means" with the Wii generally. It's true the Wii was wildly successful, and its true the controller helped that happen. It's also true that its conventional design kill off 3rd party interest and was generally offputting to many gamers. It cemented a certain reputation that they've been unable to shake ever since.

WiiU - yeah

This is all without even touching some of the insane moves in the handheld area. They love being some weird and gimmicky. It's ok to poke fun at them. You can still love 'em all the same

It looks like a rear view mirror reflecting a game image from the Zelda trailer, IMO. Not sure what those white caps are but they look relatively flat.

Real leaks are usually followed up relatively soon with corroborating information. I'll give it another 12 hours.

lol@people thinking the final controller could look anything like that. Sure the Gamepad was too big for many people - but Wii, WiiU etc. had all good looking controller.

Well, if this is real then it certainly looks different! I can see the stick placement taking some getting used to. Other than that, I wouldn't mind playing games on that thing -- especially if the controller is a portable.

Hope it's fake. I'm all for change, love the GamePad and what it allows Splatoon to do, but that mock-up looks really uncomfortable.

looking back at the wii u unveil is both funny and painful

we pretty much shit on it

and were all correct in shitting on it

Man, I kind of miss how much less negative I was before GAF. :p

I would have been right alongside the posts dissing on the name if I knew about this site already. But I wasn't, and instead was actually pretty happy about it because (I think we knew about it at the U's unveiling?) Pikmin 3 hahah. That and the famous Zelda Wii U .gif. I remember talking to some friends on another forum on how excited I was.

'Course that all changed when Pikmin 3 got pushed back.

Also I'm now aware of the fact I was reading on the "Cafe" five years ago. Holy. Time flys.

Probable fakery aside, wouldn't this just be a design refinement of the Wii U concept? A controller with a touchscreen.

Nintendo said NX would be something totally new so I assume that doesn't mean another roll of the multi-screen asymmetric gameplay dice.

(I'm assuming here that this is meant to be a home system controller. If it's a handheld, conceptually it's a round iPhone with analog sticks - similarly not exactly anything more than a refinement of the past)

*Looks at the image*

What are supposed to do with a controller like that? What's the point?

No way they'd release a controller without physical buttons... Right?? Iirc the patent mentioned a digital button layout the player can customize, but that is such a bad idea

The idea being floated is that they're haptic buttons, not touchscreen virtual buttons. Sort of like the haptic feedback on the Steam controller. They stick up and you can actually feel them.

Sony just stuck a couple of sticks on their existing pad and called it a day. It was much less than perfect. Even up until the PS4, Sony's form factor was the red-headed stepchild of controllers. Sega started with a dpad/button gamepad as well, then made this monstrosity:

I've actually used that controller and it's great to the point I have zero idea why the Dreamcast controller didn't mimic it exactly.

Just because you could doesn't mean you should.

Please be fake, this console will be DOA if this shit is real. All I want is a normal controller, no gimmicks and it keeps the price lower.

It apparently includes tactus. Which raises the buttons from the screen so you feel/press it rather than tap the screen.

Only time will tell.

I can't believe there are so many people taking this seriously. Come on, you guys are smarter than this.

It just happens to look exactly like the drawings we saw before, it looks Photoshopped, it's completely impractical which despite fools saying to the contrary is not typical of Nintendo controllers... and people think it might be real? El-oh-fucking-el.

nothing is ever certain with nintendo

i wouldn't be surprised if they unveiled a controller that looked more expensive and less comfortable than the one in the OP. they don't give a fuuuuuuuuuuuck

We're on page 39. I'm tired, but I don't think anyone is smarter than this. It's shown time and time again that most don't also know how patents work either and immediately jump to conclusions that "that's how the controller will look?!" when in reality the patents we've seen have been general use and possible functions of certain aspects. Not everything can or will make it. We've also never even gotten a design patent so there's that too.

Every controller and handheld patent we got has had radically different look from one another because those kinds of patents are not meant to show off the final design. And this sticks far, far too closely to a design that was not a patent for design.

Anyway, I'm out.

Whoa that looks bad. Really bad. Which makes me think this is fake, but as others itt have noted, this is Nintendo we're dealing with. Its actually possible that this is real.

Really hope it's a fake, no physical button will be disappointing.

Plus, the ergonomy doesn't look great at all.

I'm kind of curious what Nintendo have in stores for us but please, don't do a Wii U thing again.

It seems like the guy on Reddit is regurgitating aspects of the Geno NX leaks, which turns this from an 85% chance of being fake to a full 100%.
