Why couldn't the console run the mobile demo? If Nintendo wants to be cost effective going with mobile chips in everything seems like a possibility.

I have a hard time giving a single fuck about this "innovation" considering that we have VR arriving at the same time. There's also not much reason to believe in this getting the support it needs to thrive, Wii U controller is a nice example of that.
I posted earlier, if this is handheld, I'd expect at least $250.
Full namebrand smartphones with this hardware capacity sell for $200 or even less.
So, without full smartphone functionality / 4G / what have you, this hardware would cost Nintendo significantly less to make, barring the screen itself, which is just weird.
Even still, AND with the Nintendo markup, I think $250 wouldn't be unreasonable, but I think $300 is too high.
Then again, with the way hardware makers are marking up their hardware DRASTICALLY these days, you may be spot on at $300... Just... who will buy it?

Newer technologies can. There's tons of demos of different ways to do it Disney has a tech demonstration out that can change the texture of the screen. There are also some that can provide voltage to different areas to make the screen physically rise and depress on touch.
No released consumer products use it though to my knowledge.
If this is real, which I'm still torn about since I thought it was 100% fake and then GAF went all detective on it, I just hope this controller is the prototype to show off their idea and the real deal at least has physical buttons or is at the very least more ergonomic for the hand

Better comparisson, cut from the video, the "NX" version looks downgradeda bit with shadows.
Now 100% convinced this is fake. But I still maintain that it's a very good fake.

This seems more like really bad game design ideasYou really should let the developers just surprise you instead of thinking about bad game design options .
Then you're back into the problem where developers have to spend a lot more money and time either porting to this weird gimmick, or going all in exclusively on it.
Developers are quite fond of being able to easily plop things across from PC to PS4 and Xbox One. Less work jumping through hoops, more returns. Hell, the similarity between VR platforms means people can count on easier porting too.
All Nintendo had to do this generation was hunker down, make some hybrid well powered system or very similar handheld and console offerings and deliver good content available across both. If this thing pans out, they've already found the way to fuck themselves with a wildly expensive gimmick just like the WiiU gamepad. Its just insanity.
Just as VR arrives to deliver a concave/360 degree view, Nintendo choose to focus on convex and all the limitations with that. I guess I shouldnt be surprised.

There are so many variables here it's impossible to come to a logical conclusion. It might be super affordable and looks futuristic enough to grab casual folks as an impulse buy, it night have varying control options, it might be very powerful or very weak.
No matter what this is the only route Nintendo can afford to take. A traditional console would fail. At least with this there's a weirdness to it that's intriguing.

Even so, If you think the 62.72 is referring to the length of the video then you're essentially agreeing its a fake, fyi (which is fine of course!):
Why would a real devkit be playing a youtube video of a tech demo exactly? And why would a timestamp be displaying only the total length of said video? Makes no sense to me.
If we are assuming this is real, then we have to asusme this is a tech demo running on the hardware and therefore would only logically be a FPS counter (as you see in any tech demo thats)

Except there is zero evidence this is true. They may finally be at a niche point in the game where they don't fit in the normal console space. They're probably much better off at this point offering something unique and cheap (not saying this will be) than expensive and similar to PS4/XB1.
I just don't see Nintendo drawing in the GAF crowd any more. Too many things would keep them away. They're probably better off marketing stuff like this that is somewhat unique.
I agree, but as far as I am aware there is nothing beyond the concept/demo form that would allow you to feel a differentiation between buttons before pressing them.
The Bosch demo from CES is bleeding edge if they can implement something like that into a controller and get it to production. That's assuming the tech is even battery effiecient. None of that sounds like Nintendo, a company who prefers to make use of established existing technology.

That just leaves the space around the sticks for controls. Haptic feedback = touchscreen, right?

Don't forget the image on the screen doesn't show any signs of being shopped onto it so the picture would have to be applied in a different manner. (Cutout picture?)
Yep. And the silence of most gaming websites regarding this "leak" except from destructoid concerns me.

I am 100% on the train that Nintendo can't just make a traditional console, they need to make something outside the box with some kind of hook. But it has to be the right kind of hook. That "hook" being again some kind of touch/tablet screen just seems like they are barking up the wrong tree, chasing an audience that doesn't want them. You aren't going to wow people with touch screen type gaming in 2016, especially not when consumer VR is dropping in that same time frame and probably stealing all their headlines.

Nintendo would be the first to use it in the gaming space, certainly, but that doesn't necessarily make it a bad idea.
Again. Not just tech demonstrations. Actual consumer products where haptics effectively replace a tactile button.
Because these haptic tech demos have been around for years and years.

It doesn't have to be. Nintendo could provide a "standard button" controller they can drop in their project with an optimal classical configuration.
Then they'd just need their UI designer to make a better layout for certain elements.

Agreed, but we still know nothing else about this thing. That's why the whole "this will kill Nintendo!!!!" stuff is maddening. The hook doesn't have to be the controller.
