People need to stop using the Wii as some sort of reference point. Post-SNES, that's been Nintendo's only real console success. It's the exception, not the rule.

Assuming it's not a photoshop, is the screen curved? That is, does it bulge towards the player in the middle and away at the ends near the sticks. Because the angle of one of the sticks looks very weird unless that's the case...or the stick doesn't return to neutral when released.
 
Since this may be real, i'm thinking its a handheld that can be used as a NX console controller, but wont be forced expensive controller like WiiU.

Will most likely give people the choice to buy both.
 
I'm kind of late to this thread so someone may have already figured it out. But what is the reflection on the controller? Looks kinda weird.

Overall though I'm intrigued if this is the road Nintendo are going down. They certainly are going down their own route and don't care what anyone thinks about it either.

Unless this leak came directly from Kyoto's R&D offices that's not really possible. Why would an external developer be given an experimental prototype? If devs are really expected to develop games on this thing, it would need to be near finalised and would only be able to receive minor revisions (nothing that would break prior development).

I still call fake on this.

It also was launched in a pre-iPhone/iPad world, which has been a huge game changer for the audience Nintendo seems to be trying to target.
 
The only thing I dont understand about haptic feedback is that it seems incredibly useless for this controller

The analog sticks largely determine the traditional experience, and will any dev want to bother having buttons pop out anywhere other than where the A and B buttons already are?

Why bother with the technology?

My bigger concern is that A and B are very close to the sticks, leaving no room for X and Y, which any standard third party game needs.

Exactly. My guess is that it is real and there are the hand grips as shown in the patent.

With haptic buttons, a dev can put as many buttons as they want anywhere on the screen.

DS and 3DS are in the same camp and both successful, so this is the new norm for Nintendo. The days of being the most powerful traditional video game device are over. Wii U is the flop.
 
Right now the only issue would be the buttons which would depend on the haptic feedback which we cannot know if it's good or bad until it's revealed/demoed. Other than that the idea is sound based off the patents.

Just needs grips...or maybe it's more comfortable than it looks (Wii U gamepad was massive but didn't feel awful)
Also, the Wii U's issue wasn't the gamepad but the marketing (including advertisement and price)
The gamepad didn't provide a detrimental experience.
There should also be pro controllers for multiplayer since I don't think Nintendo would make people buy four of these to play something like smash or mario kart
 
I have to agree that the lit screen not lighting up the sides of the white analog sticks is a bit weird.

I mean, put a small white, flat object on your smartphone screen with a bright image. It looks off.

Nice. But gives the impression it's cutting a ton of the scene though which isn't necessarily the case.


When I'm home I'll try and make another one the other way around; which shows the controller and then the clip in the middle of the screen at about 8 seconds to demonstrate how it could be adding extra screen, rather than cutting it off.

They are not consoles. I think that poster was referring to the home console space. Maybe there is more to this, some kind of hook, something that clicks and makes it all make sense, but this is also the same company that launched the cluster fuck of a bad idea know as the Wii U just 3 short years ago. They aren't infallible. Gone are the days that where they just got the benefit of the doubt.

the psvita devkit was based on a totally different form factor, so it's possible. Also if handheld games can be played on a console it will need everything to have a 16:9 mode that a second handheld form could use.

but it's probably just a dev prototype that loosely resembles the real handheld.

maximized screen space on a small form factor handheld, more ergonomic than a rectangle.
Lack of face buttons and dpad is a bummer but there are still shoulder buttons and dual analogs (that are hopefully clickable), and I can see it resonating with Nintendo dislike for complicated controllers.

I doubt some haptic feedback will magically make virtual buttons feel as good as real ones; however for basic inputs touch buttons are ok-ish. The biggest issue is not knowing where they are, but things like pressing either right or left of the thumbstick should be fine

So my question is, why would so much of the screen in the normal demo not be represented in the "prototype"? Wouldn't most of the original screen scale down to fit the oval screen?

What, using gyros for camera movement?

Smartphone games have done that for years and so did the 3DS and Vita in some cases. It's really not that new. Eventually we figured out that spinning around in your chair trying to find the thing you're looking for just isn't fun gameplay.

Yes, but where do you see devs putting these buttons? The sticks will determine how much space your thumbs have from the stick to the buttons, and why would you not just use a standard button layout?

Wont most devs put their buttons exactly the same place?

besides, the true innovation for this gen is paddles, damn it. I want a future where I dont have to take my thumbs off the sticks
