Basically they have something that can connect to a TV, go mobile, and also work in VR?

That's nice, but clearly as time goes on there seems to be less and less of you. And that's a problem for Nintendo, which in turn could be a problem for you and the kinds of games you enjoy. You can't just live in this bubble where sales don't matter and you're just gonna be able to keep plucking Nintendo games off a Nintendo tree forever.

Yes. This is the absolutely the breaking point because it doesn't have buttons or a d-pad. They are throwing away all of the progress they've made in evolving controllers.

If it is real, it is more of an evolution of the Wii U tablet controller.

The problem with the Wii U tablet is that it is big, bulky and has a huge border around the screen. So putting the tablet controller up to your TV screen blocks your view. This new controller fixes those issues.

Those problems you are describing are not at all why the Wii U flopped so hard. Creating an "evolution" of a product that the market so quickly and decisively rejected seems pretty damn foolish.

Here's a visual demonstration of how I see it all working. Basically the buttons labeled "A" and "B" are not physical, the screen uses haptic feedback to make virtual buttons feel like physical ones so each game can have its own setup. As you can see in the image Super Mario 3D World is limited to just run and jump as those are the only inputs the game uses, other games might have 4 virtual buttons or 6 or 12. Whether a Dpad will be in the final product is interesting, perhaps the exchangeable buttons patent we saw? We could even switch the analog sticks for circle pads to benefit portability.

Why is everyone thinking about that when it seems obvious, if such a tech was used, it would be more for something like that.

And the portable would have a smaller version of it to replace the bottom screen of the 3ds.

That's true. But these tech demos have some default flyarounds which could still have been used here. We have a fps counter or version number on the top though.

Edit: Based on the video, it's actually a tech demo that you would chose to port to a device like the controller, thanks to the dual stick + touchscreen functionality shown off.

Because it's obvious when you see the button placement how limited it is. Where's the damn dpad ? Where's the place to put it ?

We don't know what the resolution would be, but using a wider field of view might make details too small.

That's nonsense, that fov is simply too small for it's own good. Fine details don't account for much when you can barely see anything in the frame. Also there's no reason for the horizontal fov to be smaller than the default 16:9 frame. Not to mention it's freaking off-centre but still perspective correct with the corresponding screen grab, which is impossible unless it was cropped from a larger image. Shifting the camera's position would change the perspective (also if you were going to mess around with the camera, it wouldn't be that hard to also fix the fov while you were at it).

Random... but Nintendo is working with Sharp on displays that conform to custom shapes so a haptic feedback touch screen in the shape of a controller isn't out of question.

This just seems either fake or a prototype to get games working with the general idea of the NX.

It seems to be about a 50/50 split of believers and naysayers, but the most damning strikes against it are:

1) The screen is displaying a still from a public UE4 demo video.
2) It lacks Nintendo's trademark ergonomics.
3) It's a near 1:1 copy of a patent design, and patent designs usually use extremely basic, broad
images to convey information as simply as possible.
3) The photo has been up on many news sites for over half a day now and Nintendo has done nothing about it.

I think it's safe to say it's fake.

It really isn't too difficult to fake

3d printed casing would explain why the sticks look so fake. They don't look like they can even move, or like there's some sort of rubber nipple over them, or as if the entire thing is one solid piece.

About the tech demo. It's interesting that the picture used is an exact replica of one found in a youtube video and doesn't show anything new to the left or right and it's off centered. Also being able to match up a picture perfectly with an off screen picture at an angle of the controller/handheld doesn't sound right

Ya know, I'm team real just because I want to see the shit storms of it. I just hope it's the actual handheld and can be used as a controller for the more traditional console. As far as screen spacing and analog sticks getting in the way... I wouldn't discount the thought that the console is still going to plug into the TV, after all. Most of the action should be taking place on your TV, not the controller, but the controller's screen is what allows for custom button mappings and allocation.

Now, considering the fact that would probably has a gyroscope on top of that, this is looking to be one expensive controller, and I'm not a fan of that prospect. It looks like a nice piece of tech, but is it worth the risk? Not right now, it isn't.

It's an interactive demo automatically progressing. It is only zoomed in since the screen res is piss poor yet again so zooming it out fully would make it look garbage, therefore allowing you to look around to compensate.
