Given how secretive and leak-paranoid Nintendo is when it comes to NX, what makes you think any developer has the "final product"?

They certainly didn't have the "final product" for the Wii U GamePad at this point in 2012; it wasn't unveiled until E3 2012. The Ubisoft Rayman Legends marketing video leaked in April 2012, showing a Wii U GamePad that used the original design from E3 2011.
 
I'd rather not have the sticks protruding through the screen. Touch screen virtual buttons sound awful as well. How do you think something like this could work?

This isn't the first time Rösti has spoken like this and then had a vague backtrack. He did it twice in the NX thread that got locked. One was saying he would possibly have info to share and then not delivering on that because of "administration purposes" and then when pressed about it he uses his big words and vague statements and goes AWOL for awhile.

The controller is a fake, he's just upset that all these rumors and leaks are killing any positive buzz for the NX and It's frustrating that he knows what it is but can't talk about it nor confirm if this pic is fake or not.

It's just funny, if anything. My guess is that NX reveal is at E3, rather than sooner, as many are expecting, but who knows.

I don't think that's at all a sure thing. They could do a clean break with 3/DS and not offer BC/VC for those platforms, or it could be one large screen where you can see both screens from those prior gen games.

Perhaps. But it could also be the handheld, so then the (default) controller for the console could have no screen in it. (I'm presuming you'll be able to use the handheld as a controller for the console).

Gotcha. I think if anything, that just lends credence to this being faked. If there were camera controls, the geometry wouldn't line up in the same ways as that gif is demonstrating.

First of all, there is no difference in patents before and after release. The patent does not change after it's filed as it is part of the application process and the claims of the document.

Second, just because previous patents of Nintendo, which may have focused on a particular aspect of the broader hardware/console/handheld, are more abstract, it does not mean that in this case that should be a knock against the photo. How many other ways would there even be of showing the patented non-rectangular screen? There's not that many variations of an oval-shaped controller. And adding in more physical buttons would be against the point of the screen in the first place.

Third, it would make a *ton* of sense for a devkit prototype to resemble the patent drawing very closely.


Point is, I don't know if this is a fake photo or not. And we don't know if it's a final commercial design or an early devkit prototype (latter being more likely anyway). But to dismiss it because it's too close to one of the patent drawings? That is idiotic and illogical.

So where is the patent from before the Wii U controller was unveiled which looks like either the final version or the E3 2011 version (which was basically the same thing, just with circle pads instead of sticks, and a slightly more cramped layout)?
 
Sooooo...last time i checked we were on page 37. Are we still not sure if it is a fake or not? And didnt want the leaker share a video of the controller?

Depends on how the demo is constructed. If they're just playing with rendering images on the second screen and moving the viewpoint around, there's no reason why they'd need 3D camera control - they could just pan the existing frames in the demo.

Ah okay, now I see what you were talking about earlier. Took me a while to catch on. That's a bit weird.

On an unrelated note, has there been any rumors regarding the resolution of this device?

I guess as an analogy you could imagine being in a room versus a picture of that room. With the picture, you can zoom in without any object changing its relative appearance or distance from each other. If you were in the room, however, even at the exact same angle the photograph was taken in, if you walked forward (simulating a zoom in) you would already change how the scene looks considerably.

I was being very confusing sorry, I hadn't put much thought into physically zooming with your head, i was meaning basically scrolling over a larger 2D frame, so the picture one. Other methods could work too depending on the game but if this pic is genuine it would be picture style.

it does look like that but is obviously true for the vertical anyway. having enough horizontal movement for being able to peek behind where the sticks are might make sense. that is assuming head tracking is a feature but I expect it to be.

I'm also not caught up completely yet but I'll try to give a summary of what I've seen until someone makes something better, hope I get it right:

-DetectiveGAF found the screen on the controller is a cropped version of a 2 yr old UE4 demo
-Rosti posted in ascii I believe it was a vague post which implied this could be either real or fake.
-We still don't know if E.T. took the picture.
-Speculating this controller uses Tactus

This is just assuming the controller is real. I'm not caught up yet but I just posted a few noteworthy things I've seen so far. Hopefully helps you or some gaffers out!

Is there precedent for such a thing? Because when I hear people suggest that, it seems like a thin explanation for why the image not only fits perfectly but also why so much of it is cropped. Sure, there are different reasons for why the image on the prototype is what it is, but none of them seem as convincing as it simply just being fake.

Put rather bluntly, it isn't like Nintendo to leak exact hardware designs through patents like this. It would be a bit careless of them if they did it this time.

Rosti posted a cryptic comment that a lot of people took as confirmation, but then they clarified that comment with a post that could be read either way.

The tech demo on the screen was identified, though some details of that have casted some doubt on whether or not the image is real.

DetectiveGAF is amazing at finding out stuff.

Especially naming who a porn star is.

I think the controller will be similar to this. I do not think this is the final version of it. I know there will be triggers and/or a shell for it. I actually think the controller looks good and futuristic. It looks odd and like it would be uncomfortable for gameplay, but I haven't tried it so I won't render a verdict on this yet.

I've been thinking that it would be pretty unlikely that Nintendo would double down on a touch screen controller given the Wii U's reception, but this could make sense. I'm sure they'd like the games they developed for Wii U to have legs, and if they try to market to people who play casually again there would be an amazing lineup of games to play play at launch for people who skipped the U.
