The only real gimmick that seems to have endured is motion controls... So not much to go on there.
11 years later, dual screen play hasn't taken off. If you count the N64/Gamecube controllers, neither have those.
(I don't see anything else from Nintendo as real "gimmicks" aside from those things)
If talk about the gaming world, bintendo did bring:
shoulder buttons
handheld
color buttons
rumble
triggers
Directional Pad
Selfies
3d stick
Touch screen (sony used it for vita and ps4 controller)
motion control
amiibo
virtual boy
Multiplayer Ports
wiimote
This is only hardware, not talking about software (sidescrolling, mario 64, avatars...)
Enough to go on.
All gimmicks that are still used today, like sony has eye toy&VR and xbox kinect&hololens .
(wanted to say that I don't see all of this innovations as gimmicks, I believe that each device has his purpose to make gaming better. People think otherwise are just ignorant)
