"According to the Japanese PC gaming site 4Gamer.net, JCE have confirmed that the development of Shenmue Online has been halted. Though the reason for ceasing development is unknown as of now, JCE will be making an announcement on the matter next week."

"4Gamer.net, a Japanese PC Gaming site, reported JCE confirmed the development
of Shenmue Online had come to a halt. JCE hasn't revealed the reason yet, but they
said they'd be able to make some announcement next week.

A Korean gaming site, thisisgame.com, says the development has stopped around May.
According to them, SEGA has asked a Taiwanese company to develope the game.

4Gamer says they asked SEGA about this and SEGA confirmed that the development
had stopped, but they said they didn't have much information, as SEGA (Shanghai)
Software is in charge of this matter. And said they'd let us know when they're ready."

The franchise is irrelevant now. It's beyond the point of where it can make money for anybody. Sure, the few hardcore fans that are still left would support it, but even those numbers are dwindling with each passing day.

RIP Shenmue. RIP.

it would be pretty sweet if they made the game for the xbox 360... raised the resolution... touched up the textures and added new effects... put some grass around the place and released it for the PC & Xbox 360 as part of the XNA program... it would be nice.

those who've only played 1, never finished 2 and complain about the series and the idea of sega continuing it shouldnt ever EVER be allowed to respond in any shenmue threads. part 3 would indeed be the greatest thing ever. The ending to part 2 was just so....so...*sheds tear* GLORIOUS

さらにthisisgame.comの記事は，今年の3～4月頃から，シェンムーオンラインプロジェクトに関する，セガ側の開発過程のチェックも止まっており，当時JCEの関係者がその件についてセガに問い合わせた結果，なんとセガは台湾の開発会社に，同プロジェクトの開発を依頼したという返事があった……と続けている。

4gamer.net reported that JCE has asked Sega about the project status and Sega replied that Sega has requested a developer in Taiwan to develop the same project.....
