Development stopped indefinitely on all future WRC rally titles

Another big disappointment this generation... I came to think that the return of the rights to WRC to Codemasters/EA was good news and it turned out to be much worse than if Milestone had kept it🙃🤷😥

I can't say I'm surprised. It's a niche sport and it kinda worked when Kylotonn was making their lower budget games, but EA's ambitions and monetization expectations are much higher. Add to that technical problems (some of them, like stuttering during certain stages, were never fixed) and always online.

I've spent about 80 hours with the game, but I wouldn't keep buying it annually. I'm probably not alone here since they already tried doing a paid '25 season update instead of a brand new game.

Codemasters will probably focus only on making F1 games and that's really sad. But again, not surprising.

Awful awful news. These last few months I have gone back and played A LOT of rally games and the absolute state of the genre today is really sad. I enjoyed WRC and I felt future titles would only improve once the niggles of unreal were sorted etc

This is incredibly sad and I think a lot of us knew where this headed when codies got bought by ea.

Is this FIA costs vs the games revenue?

Cuz if its the FIA just go back to making DIRT games.

I'm wondering is this part of EA's cuts

Buying a studio that had several racing series (Dirt, Grid, F1) just to get the rights to the later is a stupid idea

Codemasters games aren't nearly as good as they used to be, I'm not surprised by this. The TOCA games were straight up amazing, Colin McRae Dirt 2 is still legendary peak rally racing.

So is this going to be the end of Codemasters? Shame if true they have a long legacy but seeing as I am pretty sure that EA bought them for the licenses it seems the writing is on the wall.

Dirt Rally and EA WRC are both great. Very disappointing that there'll be no more rally titles from them, but even more disappointing if the twitter getting deleted is an indication it's not just end of rally but the whole thing is being burnt down.

I swear, man. Getting acquired by EA in this industry just isn't worth it in the long run. I get their financial stability is a tempting security net, but the impending cost isn't worth it. Both for the actual creators in the studio in question and the gamers out there. They're probably gutting the studio as we speak and replacing folks with their own internally appointed micromanagers.

Oh well, I imagine Nacon/Plaion is ready to pick up the mantle.

Its been their modus operandi for a long time. They acquire studios then inherit their IPs to buckle any competition and only revitalize them when they see some competitive edge.

EA really is just run by fucking scumbags.

"Oh your game isn't making all the money in the fucking world? We're closing you down."

So if EA ends up shutting down Codemasters while BioWare continues on, then I am beginning to think that someone at BioWare management has a sex tape of Andrew Wilson or something.

I think we've seen enough people get fucked by Andrew Wilson as it is.

Soon, we will only have Fortnite, CoD, and From Software. I will only see two storefronts! Thank you 8 pound 6 ounce baby Jesus, in your little golden baby manger shoes.

No storefronts, no subscriptions, burn it all down and send in the Phoenix.

dirt rally is great, wish it would have the type of mod support rbr got for example, would be amazing to open up to then community to create new custom stages...

hope they can come back to it at some point without the need of the fia license

EA Sports WRC is the greatest Rally game I ever played next to Richard Burns Rally. It easily toppled DiRT Rally 2.0 with Le Maestros and Hard Chargers content packages.

It's a shame to see things end this way for the series.

sucks. codemasters should be put in the hands of a publisher that repects them more

that being said, rbr exists and beamng is quickly catching up so we're not starved of future rally greatness

Too bad.

Imagine Dirt Rally 3.0 with the license. Sadly, the license came with EA. So they made EA WRC which was worse than 2.0 at first, and ran on an inferior engine. But the game rebounded (dirt cheap now, its worth it) only for EA to kill them off.

This is the end of Codemasters it seems. Once greats, releasing CMR1 and 2.0.. and then the more mainstream Dirt series (seriously, Dirt 1 is great fun.. I still have it on PS3). With Dirt Rally they had 2 masterful games.. and thats now over.

But EA WRC is a good purchase right now.

FFS

Codemaster was doing fine before EA. They buy Codemaster and get WRC license... then one iteration they are done? EA execs are the worst.

WRC to give license back to Kylotonn Racing then?

WRC has posted this

Things were so exciting when Codemasters got the WRC licence right after the masterpiece that Dirt Rally 2 was. The future was looking so bright for rally games, yet here we are.
